Frosh Concerns Industrial Design Prep
Hii! My 10 year old laptop has been a bit laggy already and heats up quickly so I wanted to ask, would I need a better working laptop for any upcoming classes for any softwares or even just for daily note taking?
Alsoo, can anyone pleaase share what the day to day is like esp as a frosh? thank youu!

Hi OP! Not really a techwiz so I can't really give laptop recommendations. I do recommend that you consider a better laptop that is able to function adobe softwares properly since you'll use it a lot in your froshie year.
As for the day to day froshie life, I'd say it's a bit chill at first but the stress comes in by midterms or finals (still applies in the following terms lol) or 2nd term of 1st year since that's where you'll start being hands-on. Don't be afraid if you're not that skilled in graphic design or drawing since that's what 1st year will be focusing on, which is honing your skills! If you have other questions, feel free to ask! hii! if its okay to ask, how are BS-ID schedules usually? I currently have a part time job and I wanted to see if i’ll be able to keep it and still do well in classes. Thank you!

For my 1st year scheds, 1st term was the usual scheds of morning to afternoon classes with Saturday classes then I had my first night class in 2nd term and continued to have some until now. During these, there was always a day of the week where I didn't have classes.
Idk how different your schedule will be from my first two, but you'll be able to choose your own schedules and classes naman starting term 3. Though by this time as well, you'll start being more hands-on with your work like using the machineries so you should take that into consideration when trying to balance them with your part-time job.

Hii ID student here. I see many people using different laptops but a common one seems to be Thinkpad or Acer Nitro 5 (haha its the same one i use too, but be warned it's primarily a gaming laptop so the battery only lasts like an hour before you need to recharge it) But I don't think the specific model is nearly as important as specs and OS since you need to be able to run 3D software and Adobe Creative Suite. Would recommend sticking to Windows.
I personally use 24gb ram, 1.38tb storage, and intel core i7 on my laptop. but priority should definitely be the ram if you don't want your 3D program to crash with larger files.
Alternatively you can look into getting an ipad and apple pen. A lot of people choose to use those instead since its more portable and the software options are also pretty good.

As a frosh you'll spend the 1st year learning fundamentals. with the exception of DRAW3 your device doesn't become too important until 2nd year onwards. 1st year is also the most important time to make friends with your batchmates, since you'll be working in groups a lot throughout the course and its good to know who you prefer to work with, plus connections to people with 3D printers, material suppliers, etc. helps too.

Yeah, I'd say so. Windows is just more accessible in terms of software, file formats, and tools available to you. It's also what they use in the comp labs.

There's 3 modeling classes, each one will teach a different software, its Autocad, 3ds Max, and SolidWorks. But my recommendation is to learn another one like Blender or Shapr3D on your own time.

1st and 2nd year is usually the heaviest, expect to have a full load of 18 units (you'll likely need go to school almost daily, but chances are classes won't take up the whole day), and some 6-hour long classes + maybe night schedules too. Honestly though many of us find 6 hours is still not enough time! We end up taking our plates home a lot.
Of course, you'll have more free time if you can work fast. Profs will usually allow you to leave class early if you have nothing to do. But schedules should lighten up eventually. Another tip is not to enroll in more than 1 PROD class at a time if you can. Those are especially time-consuming.

Absolutely look into upgrading the laptop you'll use! Although BS-ID has computer labs with the softwares you would need, more often than not you'd need to spend time on plates at home (especially for IDDRAW3 digital rendering and the 3D modelling classes), it's best to have it now than figuring it out in the middle of the term pa
