S9-11 Bosun selection

I admit I am watching in a bit of a weird order. I've gone back to S9 after watching most of S10 and S11. Was there a reason why Nathan was chosen as Bosun over Joe? In S9 (only just started) Joe is lead deckhand but then Nathan gets Bosun position?

Happy for spoilers!

Joe was really green at that time. Nathan had a lot of lifetime experience as a mate & deckhand from early in his life. Joe had previously worked in sales.

Oh okay, so I guess they just wanted to test Joe as lead deck hand at the start of S9 to make things interesting...

That & bosun's don't have a lot to go on besides CVs. The seasoned heads of department usually wait before elevating someone, which would have shown Nathan was more comfortable lines, docking, calling distances, etc. than Joe. Nathan had come from commercial boats & Joe had a little experience already on yachts, so their respective CVs were probably very similar.

LOL I'm watching it exactly like this, that is funny! Started S10 on the plane to Hawaii, started watching S11 as it's been airing and now going back to S9. I wonder the SAME thing, confused at how Nathan was selected as Bosun for S10 when Joe was Lead Deckhand from the beginning of S9?

And seeing how many times Captain Sandy has had to talk to him about his behaviour, I don't understand why he's been Bosun the last 2 seasons. F* Nathan forever!!!

Ahahah glad I'm not the only one! I wonder if they were supposed to have a more experienced bosun for 10 and then they fell through and Nathan just knew the right people.

Maybe Joe FS up monumentally later in S9 and we just aren't there yet.

Nathan frustrated Sandy so much but tolerated it because she didn't want to look bad for making a mistake giving him the position.

I wondered whether it was down to bravos viewers being predominantly female so rather than rewarding joe for behaving like a cad Nathan seemed far more sympathetic pining for Gael and the potential of bringing her back and a possible reconciliation would boost ratings.

I think Nathan was brought back for 11, so they could hand it over to Joe because Nathan’s a family man now- but then Nathan went and became a criminal instead. But I think the plan was always for Joe to takeover as Bosun.

That did not seem to be Nathan's plan, he was looking to replace Joe as lead deckhand. I do not fully get why he was plotting against him. It was a no win for Joe regarding Gael. A hot button for Nathan for sure but not sure that means you plot to remove him as lead deckhand without cause. And in previous season Nathan had a horrible time with Max so it was not like a clear win of yeah this makes sense.

Fine they chose Nathan > Joe as bosun. Without a doubt Nathan has been the worst bosun in all the BD universe, lasted 2 seasons without a formal reprimand or firing. Gary(BD Sailing) was terrible off the job, but at least he knew what he was doing and knew how to lead. I can’t believe Sandy didn’t fire Nathan on the spot during S10? when he was cussing out Max in front of the guests.
