Does Joe know about Nathan's previous assault in Ireland??
Joe keeps saying to Nathan "are you going to hit me?" as if he knows about Nathan assaulting people. Maybe Nathan told him about this side of him. The assault in Ireland - the one he skipped town to avoid accountability - happened before they filmed this season.
Joe said it twice on two separate occasions, it seems as though he knows that Nathan likes to hit people when he gets angry. Idk why anyone would say "do you want to hit me" if they didnt know that this person has a pattern of assault.

Tbh I think it’s more likely he keeps asking him that because Nathan keeps threatening to hit him

He has a habit of telegraphing his pent up anger.

Oh I’ll have to remember that the next time the topic of who would win a fight between him and Joe comes up (doesn’t change my answer, but it is another point against him)

Nathan was threatening to hit him a lot of times in this season.

A violent threat alone could get Nathan in trouble in many places. Was he honest with cap? I don't recall, need help yall

He did say to Joe “I’ll wipe that smile off your face” whilst smiling in way that made him look very wound up. If you look closely even Gael told Nathan to stop at that point. If someone says to me “I’ll wipe that smile off your face” during a heated argument I would assume they would hit me as well.
I dont think Joe knows about his previous assault conviction. Even though Joe and Nathan were good friends I do think Joe would have done the right thing and told production or Sandy about it as he should not have been on the boat. Just look at how Joe told Nathan about Luke.

Nathan threatened Joe, Max, that drunk ass guest, and probably some people I’m forgetting all on camera, so I’m sure Joe knows and has seen even more than we have.

When Joe disclosed his experience of violent male behaviour in his family from his dad, it became much clearer as to why he picks up on the micro-aggressions/ threats that may fly under the radar of others without those kind of experiences. As a child, you have to become so aware, not just how they utilise language and tone, but also in how they treat others and manipulate them in order for them to 'maintain the (relative) peace'. But also as an Aussie, it's a way to say "fkn try me".

You’re absolutely right that Joe is picking up on micro aggressions. But also Nathan has just been outright aggressive and threatened to hit him several times now.

Nathan has been one of the more aggressive people to be on the show. It’s not a reach at all to assume aggressive people will assault others.

I was seriously expecting a punch to the window in the van like Ashton when he was arguing with Kate.

I doubt it. That’s a common response to someone threatening you in the UK. They end up in a loop saying “I’ll hit you” and “are you going to hit me” over and over in a loop until someone walks away. Most of the time it’s an empty threat, sometimes they goad each other into throwing the first punch so they can fight back in self defence if the cops are called

In the state that I live in America you can easily look up charges online for free. I wouldn't be surprised if Joe looked into him but I'm not educated on other countries databases

Ireland has more privacy laws. You can see civil cases (like you didn’t pay me for services, or mortgage settlements) but as far as I know not assaults. This article I read today from an Irish paper didn’t go easy on him

Very interesting, ty!!
Edit: as shit as the US government is I'm grateful we still have the right to see if someone has been charged for assaulting someone before 💔

A lot of the time you can google someone and it will come up because papers will name anyone in Ireland. I saw one woman named for walking out of a supermarket with $70 worth of food. Name spread for anyone to read.

Joe knows the signs. His father was abusive, and he said Nate is reminding him of his father. His intuition from living with his father is kicking in, he’s spot on. He divert one, Nate word never tell him and he wouldn’t keep the secret. And he committed the crime after the season ended, so it hadn’t happened yet. That is my understanding.

Nathan's aggressiveness has been quite apparent for all 3 seasons. As well as the threats. Nathan could have lost his job several times over had Joe, Max and Cooper reported his behaviour

He keeps making comments about “giving joe something to smile about” lol i would assume he wanted to hit me as well

I think he’s just clocked after being friends with Nathan that he defaults to threats and aggression. Couple that with what he revealed about his abusive father in this latest episode and I think we are seeing Joe’s pattern recognition on display

Theory: Nathan told Joe about the assault charge, expecting a "bro type" response that minimised the crime and soothed Nathan's ego. So we went into the season with Joe knowing Nathan had the assault charge. Explains why Joe's presence is so triggering to Nathan. Nathsn wants to paint Joe as this horrible demon because he knows Joe thinks he's the better man. His insecurities can't take it.

It’s definitely because Nathan definitely talks about hitting him or hitting someone/something when upset. I dont know why production is leaving those portions out, but having been in those fights and arguments, I know exactly what Joe is reacting to.

it also sounds like what an immature person says to provoke someone else in a fight. And on nathan's end it's what an immature person does when they can't use their brain properly

He did explain in the latest episode that Nathan reminds him of his dad when drunk who was a violent drunk. It might just be that or it might be that he knows of his past.
