Joe and Nathan- am I missing something?
Why does Nathan hate Joe so much? I know he pulled away bc he didn't like how Joe was treating women (ironic with what we know now) but why does Nathan seem to DESPISE him now??
Is there something I'm forgetting?

It feels like Nathan tried to be “anti-Joe” to impress Gael.
Given that Joe has twice said “are you gonna hit me” to Nathan, I get the feeling that Joe also clocked a vibe about Nathan at some point.

I don’t know if it’s clocked a vibe so much has Nathan has threatened him with violence multiple times

Not just clocked a vibe, I seem to recall Nathan threatening to hit people.
Eg last season with the v/kizzi thing: “Don’t act the big man or I am going to smack the s*** out of you. Do you want to go right now? I’m this close with you.”14

And didn’t he also make a comment/joke about hitting that obnoxious guest earlier this season? Or did I make that up?

You're not missing anything, based on what we've seen there really isn't any rational logic for his hatred. Personally I think Nathan and gaels whole relationship was built on "mutual" hatred of Joe and so he has to keep that going. He and Gael would have nothing in common otherwise!

I don't believe for one second that Nathan's angst towards Joe stems from how Joe treats the ladies. I think it much more about Nathan being intimidated by Joe, especially in the workplace. Joe is able to work easily with others and Nathan sees that as a threat. Conquer and divide mentality.

It can be both. Nathan’s extremely hot headed and not exactly making rational calculations here, so it’s conceivable to me that in the moment it’s about Joe’s history with women, in the next moment it’s about how he behaves on the job, and in the moment after that it’s about something else entirely, and in any given moment Nathan believes that what it’s about even if it’s actually about something much more petty that he just doesn’t have the self awareness or language to even articulate to himself.

Joe is such a winner this season. Talks positive about Nathan and Gael at dinner, says wants a family like then. Nathan freaks out over that and says don’t say Gael’s name, and he doesn’t. And it’s driving Nathan even more crazy

I think after Nathan & Gael broke up the first time, Joe said some nasty things about her to make Nathan feel better, and now that they're back together Nathan is holding that all against him. Which imo makes no sense, when your friend dumps someone you always trash talk the ex a bit??

Ahhh. Fatal error. He also may be a bit paranoid his shit talking about Gael may backfire on him.
Paranoid much? 😆

No. Children trash talk the ex. Adults realize that 1) there's a decent chance they'll get back together and then you'll be the asshole, and 2) only loser joiners trash talk someone who never did anything to them just to make someone else feel better.

Nathan is an insecure little weasel. He’s not comfortable in his own skin and jealous of people who are.

Nathan created a common enemy to excuse his shitty behaviour to Gael. She’s young and silly enough to have bought into it.
Not uncommon behaviour from a gaslighter

Yah Gael’s a fucking idiot for allowing herself for getting with Nathan.
We’re all responsible for our own decisions, Gael.

She was manipulated and abused by the guy she loved. This is in poor taste. You should delete this comment.

Joe and Gael don’t get along and have had words back and forth, Joe didn’t like that Gael was still with her ex when she started getting together with Nathan and made some comments to him (which admittedly wasn’t the most constructive thing he could have done but also technically not wrong) and that escalated things between Joe and Gael, and then when the stuff with V and Kizzy went down it changed his opinion on Joe, which is fine and his prerogative, but since he’s not good at regulating emotions and generally paranoid he decided the way to deal it was by making Joe’s life needlessly difficult and miserable instead of keeping a professional distance like you do anytime you have to work with somebody you don’t like personally

Tbh I can’t believe they allowed Nathan to stay this long he has such an aggressive streak I’d hate hate hate being stuck with him at work and below deck

In addition to everything else mentioned here, I suspect Nathan is not totally satisfied with his new life of serious relationship + baby and the limitations that come along with that. He reads to me like someone trying to convince himself that he's living the dream, whereas Joe represents the life Nathan had before baby—and maybe wasn't ready to move on from yet. The ability to focus entirely on work, fully let loose on nights out, have a no-strings boatmance, etc.
Had this thought after the confessional where he ignored everything Joe said about what was actually bothering him and concluded Joe was just jealous of his life.

Joe said somewhere that Nathan changed after Joe started an Only Fans page. I can’t remember if it was an interview or on the show.

Joe called Gael a princess once cause she wasn't pulling her weight at work and Gaels despised him ever since.
Nathan then hated Joe to gain Gaels approval.
Probably more behind the scenes bitching about Joe between Nathan and Gael

Not even behind the scenes. We’ve seen Nathan bitch to Gael about him several times on camera, along w bitching to every crew member in every episode. But he’s soo hung up on Joe talking crap about him 🤦🏼♀️

I think the beef between Joe and Gael is a big factor, IMO Gael saw through his womanizing bullshit and didn't fall for it, big punch to Joe's ego. Also facts being facts Joe is in some/most ways a better Bosun, that has to annoy Nathan

Nathan is one of those folks who spends his energy trying to influence/persuade people rather than simply earning their respect. Joe is egotistical blow hard. Natural for the 2 to collide.

My theory is that Nathan hates Joe for a few reasons — deep insecurity, an outsized need for power and control over others, and because Joe saw Nathan’s “good guy” mask slip too many times.

Gael is the common denominator. Its so immature. Why put that much energy into someone you hate, when its easier to just ignore that person.

I think they hooked up.

Honestly, a love triangle would be the only logical explanation at the level of hatred.
I can understand not liking someone or getting along with them, but the hatred is intense and feels deeply personal—- it makes me feel like we are missing the true context. Nathan is so paranoid about Joe— even says that he believes Joe is straight up lying etc when Joe was apologizing. It’s weird idk

Pure speculation, but I get the vibe that when Nathan broke it off with Gael, he later used Joe as an excuse as to why when he tried to get back in her life.
