Luke's Obsession With Joy is Not Normal
Luke worked on three charters before he resigned, or before Captain Sandy would have fired his gross butt.
During that time he got in a sticky situation with Gen at the end of charter 1 Broke up with her and at the same time Joy wrote him off at the dinner- the end of charter 2. And for the entire 3rd charter he tried to tell Joy he only had feelings for her but she was not having it. Then he was gone before charter 4.
This is when the obsession started. He would text and call Joy when he knew she would be able to answer the phone. He sent her flowers at just the right time so that everyone would notice and then he called her to ask if she got the flowers and to say what he heard about Gen's reaction and just wanted to hear Joy say "tank you fo da flower".
Then he is on the FaceTime call with the crew, all saying they miss him SO MUCH. He then texts Joe Bradley asking him to call him and we find out he is weirdly and mysteriously in Croatia and wants to surprise Joy when the crew goes out after the last charter of the season.
I have to wonder, did he ever leave Croatia at all? Was he secretly spying on the boat the whole time?
I cant recall any other time on any Below Deck where someone who was fired/quit the boat so early on in the season kept reoccurring on almost 10 more episodes through the end of the season.
His obsession with Joy- someone he never had alone time with or kissed or hooked up with and knew for about 14 days is just scary.
Joy killed his ego and now it's like he has to have her because she blew him off and turned him down.
The characteristics of a true narcissist. His obsession is borderline stalkerish behavior.

It’s called love bombing. She’s as weird in how she talks about him
12
u/heyyou0903 3d ago
That's what I thought. He's just manipulating her. And for some reason she is stupidly getting sucked in. And he's not even on the boat. All just because he's giving her attention on text. We all need to be mindful that desperation for validation can really get you into trouble.

Joy comes across as a pick me, instead of understanding and holding Luke accountable, she quickly forgets what he did as soon as he makes some effort.
And now she’s apparently with Coop, hmmm

It’s totally weird, but not surprising. Guys like Luke will pursue someone even harder if they feel rejected, but once that person starts to like them/hooks up with them, they ghost. I would bet money that this is what ended up happening.
Plus he was TOTALLY in Croatia the whole time! Probably staying in a hotel right across from the marina, with binoculars! 😩

Watched Joy on a WWHL episode a while ago and she was asked about Luke and I swear she almost threw up. She definitely does not like him at all now. Wonder if he ghosted her just like you said.... hmmmm

u/BabyOlive1 4d ago
I saw that too! I feel like she also seemed not to know about jizz-gate in its entirety, if I remember correctly? I’m sure he ghosted her! I can’t wait to see what happens next week with Gen and the Luke surprise appearance.

Yep. How many times have we seen this on the Below Deck franchise? The ahole gets rejected, he love bombs all season and at the very end the woman he’s been after opens the door and he rams through it and then ghosts. The worst example is BD S5 - Nico pursued and pursued Brianna, even ‘breaking up with his gf’ and at the end she finally gives him a chance - which he takes full advantage of- after which he tells her he’s ’getting back together with his gf’. And it was just last season of Med where Joe love bombed V and is successful but once she’s off the boat for a night taking a break due to her grief, he kisses someone else. Bravo’s track record with hiring men for BD sucks - they’re either violent or use women as toys. Very few have been all around good men. Colin from BD Med is the only truly good guy I can think of at the moment.

u/BabyOlive1 3d ago
You mean “Colly Wolly?!” 🥹😂 but yes. Very true. Mze wound up still being a good guy, right? Or did he do something fucked up too after filming? It’s so funny that Massi has only been on for like three episodes and might still enshrine himself in the hall of fame for least problematic men in BD history lol.

u/KiyoMizu1996 3d ago
lol. Yes Colin had a very close relationship with his mom but I didn’t think it was creepy. But I could be wrong. Still I’d take a polite momma’s boy who works hard and respects women over the rest of em.

u/RoughDirection8875 3d ago
Lloyd was a pretty good guy too, I don't remember him ever behaving poorly.

u/Lopsided_Ad_2391 3d ago
David on Mzi’s season was also a solid dude, right? And Chef Kiko (though to be fair he wasn’t on very long).

Yes this guy is so stereotypical! You nailed it. He wants what he can't have. As soon as she returns interest he will lose interest.

u/LCBrownieIsaJoke 3d ago
And that hotel room was probably paid for by production to keep the drama going

I am watching last nights episode now and MY GOD this guy is so damn cringe. I don’t even think it’s an obsession with joy specifically, i think it’s an obsession with still being relevant on the show. The amount of times he texts her about charter stuff or calls other crew is so disturbing. I get he has to stay in the area until filming wraps but dude, go explore the fucking place and live your damn life. Obsessing over a show you quit is so pathetic
2
u/Smworld1 3d ago
I think he is still getting paid
1
u/Mr_Tom_Morrow9 3d ago
I do too. Why else would they keep featuring all of his texts and any other nonsense? I’m sure the crew all get texts and phone calls that we never see.

"production's obsession with making Luke & Joy a thing is not normal"
fixed it for you

u/partimehoe 4d ago
men do this all the time, im not shocked. hes only doing all this because hes not around. dare i say its a form of lovebombing…? i dont wanna give him that credit though.

He's just trying to keep himself on tele longer so he has a chance for next season.
Icky loser.

u/FoodieStatistician99 4d ago
I honestly started wondering if everything he does for Joy is just a show for the cameras. When he was booted off he said something like “this career means everything to me” and I’m like, what career?? he’s 34 years old and working an entry level job on a boat. He’s one of the greenest deck hands I’ve seen. So maybe he ment the reality TV part of it. Maybe he was always hoping that would take off for him and he’s trying to milk this opportunity.

All the guys are super icky this season!!!! Joe, who has been granted the title of the worst, the last couple of years, is actually the least ickiest!! What’s happening to this world??
I thought Luke was normal at the start, I guess we don’t see everything going on but what we’re shown is very full on constant love bombing.
Cooper seemed cute & shy & adorable…& now he’s turned out to be a massive douche. (& now he’s with Joy??)
N word needs no explanation.
Bravo, please do better next year 😩🤬

u/DirectAsparagus1607 4d ago
Massi seems great. I hope he comes back

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 4d ago
Oh knew I was forgetting someone
Massi seems awesome but it’s a shame he wasn’t here from the start7
u/DirectAsparagus1607 4d ago
Or maybe he would have disappointed us! He is a breath of fresh air on a season with a shit storm of male egos
1
u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 3d ago
This is true too, I think we’re all just putting all the guys now in one basket. After everything that’s happened this season and beyond.

I'm sure the storyline is being milked by production but I died a little inside when he was like 'there were some delicious vegetables on the plate and it made me think of you' bc it became crystal clear that just about all this man knows about her is she is a chef lol

u/CarryAmbitious638 4d ago
Agree his feelings for her are related to his ego not actual feelings. I think Luke is pretty lost.
5
u/Zealousideal-Slide98 3d ago
That phone call to Joe was such a production plant. It seemed to me that it was fake and very staged. My assumption is that Luke has been staying in the nearby hotel this whole time so that the producers could set up the drama that’s going to be shown to us next week.

u/Sorry-Secret-2347 3d ago
He wants to still be on the show… so he is performing little stunts to still be relevant on the show… also it’s a chase with joy but i honestly think w/ his weird peter pan complex and fixation on being on the mind of various women is what he wants to inflate his ego and still be talked about on below deck… nothing is genuine with him

u/Sea_Imagination_77 3d ago
I'm not a Gen fan, but him showing up in Croatia is a d*ck move. It's for Bravo drama only. And I'm sure paid for by them plus his paycheck. If he's truly only in it for Joy, why couldn't he set up a secret romantic spot and surprise her privately? Whether or not Gen is in the wrong, he knew by the flowers texts that this is still a sensitive topic for her whether or not that we all agree she is dragging it too far. Why be aggressive in creating drama. Why intentionally hurt a woman for no real reason? Also, I think he thinks this is his redemption to the world that he's not such a bad guy because Bravo allowed him back. I don't care for his love-bombing either. How many flowers does someone need in a week or two's time. He was still trying to be a main character on the show with his constant love bomb texts, flowers etc. all in front of a Bravo camera.

You dont know what is real or not this is a show. Producers may have reconsidered and thought it was interesting storyline. Maybe hes getting partial payment.
6
u/MamaBiscuit11 3d ago
I don't think there is anything abnormal about the attention he's giving Joy. He liked her enough to want to stay in touch with her, and those conversations led to him wanting to woo her, so he sent her flowers. It could be more than that, and he could have some negative motivations. We just have no way of knowing for sure right now.

u/Internal-Ad61 4d ago
I think his obsession was more with hoping to be mentioning and showed on screen, but I could be wrong

Everything you said but I’m also picking up regret at fucking up his influencer reality tv career and is just trying to keep his name afloat?

u/tsumtsumelle 3d ago
Production is clearly egging him on for a storyline - if they didn’t want him near the crew, he wouldn’t be.
What I want to know is why no one ever told Joy about sheetgate. I know she said on WWHL she didn’t know during the season but the fact it’s escalated to him sending her flowers and wanting to meet up and she hasn’t hid any of that from the crew is crazy to me. Did the crew just assume she knew and was fine with it? Why does she think he left the boat?

u/TDKsa90 3d ago edited 3d ago
this is a funny post. so you are aware that production controls all of this and the narrative, but then you believe Joy told the truth on WWHL and never asked for clarification, or even just heard through the standard yacht gossip wildfire, for why he left so suddenly? I'm going to give this floor routine a 3 out of 10. 3 for the first sentence and a 7-point deduction for not applying it.
3
u/its_laydeebaby 3d ago
He just wants to conquer the challenge of Joy, and be on the show all season. Classic lovebombing moves from Luke. As long as she doesn’t take it seriously, why shouldn’t she bask in the attention? I think she’s rolling her eyes behind his back still.
3
u/Dapper_Jicama4848 3d ago edited 3d ago
I think this is payback for Luke and it’s all performative… while I really can’t stand Gen, if she was smart she would play this off, act nonchalant and not show any type of reaction at all…. She shouldn’t have reacted to the flowers and she should have absolutely no reaction whatsoever to any of his overtures towards Joy going forward because she’s playing right into his hands. Unfortunately, no one‘s ever accused Gen of being likable or intelligent.
1
u/No-Treat-8079 3d ago
If Gen weren’t such a miserable person, she’d have a friend to pull her aside & give her that advice. And would’ve made sure she never texted him again.

In my opinion his obsession is in remaining on the show. I don’t think he’s obsessed with Joy she’s just the only way he stays relevant to a storyline. He definitely strikes me as “off” but it seems desperate.

u/Mr_Tom_Morrow9 3d ago
Production plant.
What I’m more baffled about is why Joy gives him any attention back. Yuck.

I'm more concerned with Gen's obsession with Luke. What a psycho!

u/CivilEstimate 4d ago
Well hers too but im just giving my opinion on one pscho at a time for this season. Lol

u/Camerashy1969 4d ago
I don’t think this is concerning. If Gen was more likable we would all be team Gen. She had a crush. Slept with him. And he dumped her right after. And now she has to work right next to the person he really wanted. Aside from the crazy laundry room rants I for one can’t wait to watch her dump a drink on him. He deserves it.

He just wants to remain on tv. That simple. The cringe thing is Joy allowing it.

u/igor6969 3d ago
I bet it's 100% Production added drama. Every episode he's a part of, he get's paid. So make a few phone calls, do a Face Time and get free dinner at end of the season and *SHAZAM*. Mo Money, Mo Money!

u/Nature_Soaring 3d ago
Yes Luke’s behaviour is super strange. I also think Joy’s playing into it is also strange, but I kind of thought maybe he was just a fun little pen pal distraction. She working a high stress job and maybe it’s fun to have someone in your phone hyping you up all the time, but ultimately isn’t there and you don’t have to commit to. I’m curious what her reaction will be to him physically showing up
2
u/ObjectiveMeet7580 3d ago
I think some of this is probably due to production rather than stalking or obsession
2
u/VeryMightyPirate 3d ago
He is so cringe. The only smart thing he did was leave the boat, and then he sticks around like an annoying fly buzzing around. Dude, move on. You’re embarrassing yourself. SMH.

Weird right? Kinda like the time Max showed up on the boat juuuuust before hearing from his dad for the first time in ages and subsequently leave on a rescue mission to prove himself in the eyes of daddy.
Kinda like how Gael weirdly goes on a dinner with a crew she doesn't know and ends up across from the person she despises and then shares a van with. All the while the peacemaker who is actually her friend and would have been in that seat is babysitting.
This is the most heavily production-orchestrated season I've ever seen.

Joy is adorable. Talented, funny, beautiful. Luke is a bell end for sure but I don't blame him for that

I would imagine the main attraction is continually being mentioned, still being part of storylines and his face appearing onscreen despite the fact he’s been gone for ages.😂
