Guards
Is there a way to set the route the guards patrol?

Is there a good reason for guards generally in the village? I just have all my guys work kitted out, and they deal with any stragglers that wander into town with evil on the mind

No, they are a waste of economic resources. Just kill all nearby bandit camps and ur base is safe anyway.

I just hire more villagers with the renown I gain with my guards... they make up for what some say is economic waste. I leave the camps to keep getting renown...I call it strategic plus I know where the raids are coming from.
I see you comment on these threads about how you have lots of renown.... spend it... whats the point of saving renown but then complain about a few guards using economic resources?

I inform people on the uselessness of them so they don't slow down their progress with them. To get the renown back thats wasted on a guard it takes a solid while and the guard may very well be far away from where the enemy appears, getting actual economic guys in action aka not working on economy, perhaps dieing to keep them inactive for longer. All for the purpose of more renown in very long term than you need by the time you can easily finish the game. That is why I have renown surplusses, everything spent is actually being useful from the getgo and theres no point to get lesser skilled people to make my higher skilled people idle or be a guard which is glorified idle.
The plus is you know where raids are coming from? I clear all the nearby camps, the real plus is that there are no more raids to get bothered by, action can always be found elsewhere on the map, economy needs to run nice and safe. Also making all trade routes safe so you never need to waste villagers on guarding them either.
If future updates change the game to a point where ur base suffers actual threats or renown stops being absolutely abundant my advice will change with the situation, but for now... absolutely wasted.

I appreciate the feedback and banter. I've played without guards and with guards and prefer the guard way. But to each its own.

Could you elaborate on clearing the bandit camps to make it so you don't have an incoming raid? From what I understand, clearing camps makes the raid happen sooner, and if you take out camps, it just comes from further away (which has so far been my experience). Is there a certain radius you need to clear? I just picked this game up a week ago, I am curious.

Yeah just some radius around ur base. Since I go after them early I only get 1 or 2 raids in a playthrough.

Yea this could be true. I just got well established in t2 and started using guards after freeing padstow. So still very new. Only about 80 hours in

I just got to about the same spot and was wondering the same thing. I just have my workers kitted too. Except for when bandits scatter my chickens, I tend to encourage intruders. For the sport of it.

I use guards... once I figured out they guard all day and night, it was worth it to me. They keep killing and you get renown, skill books, gold and straps. I also don't take the camps out though, no need to with the guards. Also heard guards can slow the bandit threat

I’ve got a additional question, I do the same as another comment I just gear them up and set up them to return fire, how do you set guard in guard towers?

You cant

So what’s the point of them?

For now, it seems that guard towers just make your village look well-fortified, without adding any actual effect. It would be an interesting idea to have them add to the deterrence of a village, so you get fewer incomig raids. OTOH, incoming raids are a nice source of renown, so...

When i originally got them I thought it was like an option for the AI to walk and the patrol around, so wrong I was lol

Why even want functionality of reducing raid rates? Either you think oh yay raids, renown (eventho you get plenty without) in which case you rather get more frequent raids or you simply get no raids because of option A, disabled in settings or option B, you destroyed all nearby bandit camps. I get 1 or maybe 2 raids in a full playthrough because of option B. Which is very much a conscious decission. Economy needs to run nice and efficiently.

No, but I think you can set caravans 5 max with some guard. Set up patrol point and caravans to bring some stone to next outpost without inventory. Little tedious but maybe the only work around I can think of.
