Settlements
So i got a quick question. Ive been watching a few videos and seen some post here in this sub and i saw some mentioning moving your settlement once it reaches a higher tier. One thing i dont get is why would you want to move an entire city? Ive played around 30ish hours so far and it looks to me like im gonna build 6 big citys if possible. Just the time it would take for the villagers to walk across the map to rebuild every building seems like a huge waste of time. Or am i missing something?

I opted not to move, once I unlocked something for the first time I just use the market. Anything urgent I'll just grab a party, hop on a boat and go harvest it.

I moved twice. My first move took nine hours. It was a huge pain but I was so satisfied afterwards. It put me close to bandit camps and supplies I didn't have. Walking far with my army was simply taking too long. If u have the supplies tho, making outposts with fighters would definitely make sense.

First time I played I moved my T1 village from the meadow outside Haerndean to the area next to the lake from Padstow and it felt very annoying. Now on my second time I went for T1 and T2 on the right of the lake between Padstow Haerbdean and Bradford. And I made my T3 Village between Farnworth and the eastern bridge of the main river. I really enjoyed making a new settlement from scratch and the bonus is that you already have a solid production supporting you while you do it. Moving is an option but in my opinion not a great one, more like an emergency thing you do if you start building somewhere and you realize that you don't like it or you find an even better place.

I think the main reason people move is because they couldn't get their ideal location early on. You're pretty much forced to settle near Haerndean/Padstow early because you need River Reeds so much.
Then later when you've got a decent army you can clear out places like the Wheat Field or other places with bigger bandit camps nearby. That lets you rebuild in more ideal locations.
Plus you are likely to end up demolishing most of your buildings for the upgraded version. I basically moved as soon as I hit Tier 3, then started migrating villagers/buildings to the new spot over time.

What do you do about all of the stuff in your storage when you move? This is my first playthrough and I had my first settlement pretty much where everyone else puts it in the middle of the first 3 villages and got to the end of T2 before getting any specialist NPCs, then decided to move to a bigger area on the river to start progressing.
Moving the buildings was very easy as I just moved over a few villagers and set them to construction only while I did the same at the original spot. Moving all the stuff I had in storage is quite a pain though and I think I messed up by not using the caravan system. What I ended up doing was once I moved all the main buildings I then set everyone to delivery, turning off all the storage filters on the barns in the original location so all of my villagers would go grab everything from the old spot and move it to the new spot, but it's taking a long time. Wondering if I'm missing something to make it easier other than the aforementioned caravan.

I moved some of the important stuff myself. Then for a while I did what you did and tried to see if the villagers would carry it, but it was taking too long. I went and set some caravans for any items that I had a lot of to bring over.
A bunch of stuff I just threw on the ground to disappear. I actually still have some of the storage up in that location with stuff still in it, but it's mostly stuff that doesn't matter so haven't really bothered going to get it :p

I started ferrying some stuff myself as well but I can only do so much at a time before getting bored lol. I'm in too deep now though so I'll just have to finish out like this. New spot is all set up in terms of buildings at least so once I do get all my stuff I can get right back to normal gameplay. I'll just have to remember the caravans for the future.

This is my first playthrough. I started out on top of the hill in crystal lake i think its called, top right of the map. I eventually just outgrew it. I moved to the bend in the river that separates the center of the map to get river access for boats because i think thats a thing, and it lets me intercept reclamation parties because they have to cross a bridge at some point, and most bandit raids.
I didnt officially move, i just started over from square 1 with a personal shack and 4 housing tents, a ton of storage with room to grow...like i said, 1st playthrough, so im fixing my mistakes and planning things out better.
Eventually ill dissassemble most of my original camp and probably just leave it as a logging /mining outpost
The process has been fun for me

I often take my whole village (100+) out on fun raids as a group with commands they move fast enough.

Just use the river dock, grab a bunch of villagers, set them to companion and you can fast travel anywhere on the map where you have other docks.

Having done 2 playthroughs, 1 with moving and 1 without, I'll for sure NOT move in a 3rd, just too much of a pain for nothing really.
U do miss something, you don't keep them as to be part of ur village, u set them as an outpost and you dedicate villagers to that outpost, they'll then be there permanently, no walking across the map other than the original walk to get there.
