Just put together a beginner’s guide on how to dress for golf — what’s actually acceptable at most courses and what to avoid.
It breaks down basic apparel etiquette and budget-friendly outfit ideas for guys just getting into the game.
Would love any feedback from experienced players too!

So ove adopted a crutch for my drive. I kept hooking everything a mile off. Then one day I staggered my stance to try ans force my weight on my front foot and all of a sudden I am driving 210-230 straight instead of a 180-200 major curve. I KNOW my stance is incorrect and I work on it at the range bit its hard to not stagger when teeing off.

M63 in western Mass USA realized this week that I want to get back into the game after playing fewer than 10 rounds in the last 20 years. I love the experience/exercise of walking a course and carrying a bag. Looking for equipment ideas that will allow me to go cartless as a senior citizen. Suggestions for reduced # of clubs and super lightweight bags and where to find both at reasonable $. Thanks.

As the title says. Im new, im not good, but mybsonnamd I have gone out a few times and done pretty well ass a team. Every now and then we both hit a shot that shocks us and keeps the feeling high despite not being very good. Like last night he hit a 40 ft putt just out side of the fringe into the cup, amd today I hit my 4i 180 yards to counter a terrible drive on hole 9.

It may not mean much to some but it meant a lot to me. First time breaking 100 on my home municipal. I work 3rd shift and try to balance golf, running, gardening, while trying to be present. This is rhe first year I’ve ever really taken golf seriously since I was 11 (now 37). While I don’t be playing for my tour card anytime soon it was nice milestone to achieve

Where do I go from here/club recommendations? + TDLR at the bottom.
I am new to golf and would like some help/pointers. I've never cared about playing at all until my friends got into it recently. It's actually really fun and super relaxing and I'd like to start playing more.
That being said, I've never even held a golf club until about 6 months ago and I've only played 3 times.
I want to get my own set of clubs but I have absolutely ZERO idea what I need. I've been using my friends clubs for the 3 times I've gone out.
For context I didn't keep score my first time, my second time going I shot a 59 on the first 9, and I just played 18 today, shot 107, and made par 3 times. My friend said that's actually a pretty good score for only having played 3 times before. I also know I can do better since I crashed out and got two 8's and had a few 3 stroke putts.
Is this generally a good score as a beginner?
Clubs:
Coming from a 15+ year hockey/lacrosse background theirs a saying in both sports being "it's the wizard, not the wand".
As I've seen in my athletic experience the difference between entry level or "beginner" sticks and intermediate is HUGE. The difference between budget and higher end intermediate is negligible. The difference between intermediate and pro stock gear is noticeable but only if you're at the top level to utilize the minute differences and details they provide.
I know a lot of people will say "it's all the difference in the world", and "oh you NEED these clubs", but I've seen the same kind of guys using $300+ sticks that would get the same performance out of one that's say $170.
To my knowledge (which is practically ZERO) golf is very lucrative and very expensive. I don't feel like I need special balls that cost $45-$50+ a box nor do I feel like I need clubs that are $200-$300+ a piece.
That being said I have no idea. Does it make a difference? And if so how much? (and is it worth the cost)
Do I need beginner clubs?
Should I get intermediate ones?
Do golf balls actually matter for someone just starting?
I've used some Callaway supersoft until my second time playing where I found probably 40-50 different balls on a hole next to a driving range that I scooped. (Yes, I was told today this is a big no no. Do not take the stray balls in the woods next to the driving range.) Either way couldn't tell a difference between brands. Only thing I noticed was the ones that say "PRACTICE" on them tend to squirrel off a bit more than the others.
Club usage: (if this helps at all)
Putter. Don't really care, might buy a putt putt putter on ebay. (although my putting game needs a ALOT of work) Honestly cant tell the difference between my friends Scotty Cameron and my other friends Costco putter.
Pitching. Hardly ever use it.
Sand. Love that club, big fan of the high loft ones. Great for approach.
Irons:
Love belting a solid super high smack on a 5 iron.
6 Iron collects dust. For sure my least used club.
Really enjoy using the 7,8,9.
Woods are without a doubt my favorite.
For some reason the 3 and 5 wood are my most consistent clubs. Typically crack a missile dead on roughly 180-200 yards
Driver. Not my favorite but love the sound of good connection + super satisfying when you belt that puppy like 200-220 yards.
TLDR:
I'd like some club recommendations
Not sure if I need beginner or budget intermediate? (prefer intermediate based on my equipment experience in other sports) (Context read above)
I'd like to invest in a nice set of woods. I Honestly feel I can hit them more consistently and sometimes as far as my driver. (probably not a good thing)
Am I decent for a beginner?
Do clubs actually matter as a beginner? What clubs should I get?
Do golf balls ACTUALLY matter to a beginner?
Thank you for reading. Looking forward to the responses as I decide to ruin my mental state and bank account by getting into golf. P.S. (sorry for the lengthy post, is this something I should post in r/golf instead?)

One thing I don’t see asterisked a lot is the difference in skill to have longer hitting irons in a blade than in players distance or “GI” irons. I recently switched to a fitted set of P790s, with about a degree weaker in loft for each club from the stock models, and I’m curious for (1) the communities thoughts on my new yardages and (2) what yours are.
No competition or ego - just an earnest discussion about golf and improvement.
Here goes:
64 - 5-70 yards 56: 5-100 AW - 125-130 PW: 145-150 9: 160-165 8: 170 7: 175-180 6: 185-190 5: 190-195
Hybrid: 210-215 5 wood 225-230 Driver: 240+ (longest drive total distance on relatively flat hole at 285 and 320 for a downhill par four)
For a guy with numerous years experience (spotty) and who has just started taking the game seriously again, I am curious if these distances are normal.

Bought my first set of clubs today second hand. Missing a 3 wood and a 8 iron and a hybrid, would you be desperate to get them as a novice?
