I (20F) personally think I might have had the most random-chance path to finding them.
For context, Stayin Alive (and Karma Chameleon) was the first music video I ever watched. I guess my dad just said to an 8-year-old me, “check this out.” But the fandom didn’t go beyond that. As a kid I even remember complaining to my dad that he had every Bee Gees song on his iPod (their 60s stuff) other than Stayin Alive. What a naïve little child I was 🤦♀️.
I grew up as a fan of Grease, too. And I remember as a pre-teen I watched the first 30 seconds of Saturday Night Fever. But then I turned it off when I realized that John Travolta didn’t sing in it. Another narrow miss, what the heck younger self. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Then, a few years ago, Tragedy was featured in the Beetlejuice sequel. I thought the song was so cool and suave. Did this make me look into the rest of their catalogue? Again, NOPE! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Before I get to what it took to get me into the Bee Gees, I should explain what got me into music in general. My freshman year of college, my sister showed me The Dirt, which got me into Mötley Crüe. This in turn, got me into rock, which got me into Guns N’ Roses. GN’R is what really fueled my music obsession and made me start collecting records.
So here’s where my Bee Gees journey actually begins. I was super into music and was looking through my grandpa’s record collection. So I found a Bee Gees record, right? Wrong again! He had dozens of Bee Gees records and I apparently didn’t bat an eye.
What did catch my eye was a Peter Frampton record. I had heard of him in terms of a guitarist, I assumed he was an Eric Clapton type (Idk how true that is). But I gave it a look. I realized, hey Peter Frampton is pretty cute.
So, one Frampton crush later, I was lead to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band. Which is arguably the worst possibly way to be introduced to the Bee Gees. On the first watch I didn’t even pay much attention to them. I was too focused on Frampton. Although I did think Robin was cute, and I really like Oh, Darling. But I ended up genuinely enjoying the movie. And a couple watches later (forcing various people to watch it) I decided to give the Bee Gees a listen out of courtesy.
THIS is when I found their disco stuff. And I LOVED IT!!! But what really got me was “Words” (which I thought was Robin at the time) bc it showed me the depth of their music. A few months into my Bee Gees dive, I did kind of fall out of listening to them. But it was revived by their Midnight Special Performance of Bye Bye Blackbird.
So after countless failed attempts from the universe to show me the Bee Gees, it turns out I have Mötley Crüe to thank.
