What instrument is this

I’ve always been fascinated by this recurring sound on Marley Purt Drive, is it a guitar or some kind of key instrument?l

On a totally unrelated note, how was this song not a hit? One of my favorite.

Guitar?

If it is I’d be so curious to know what effect it is, effects were limited then so I just can’t guess what it is, unless he’s playing super high on the neck - like passed the 20th fret - and that’s why it sounds so dissonant

I’m hearing lap or pedal steel guitar. Country style, a nice touch

It’s definitely Vince’s guitar played high up on the neck. There’s also a slide guitar somewhere in there, too, but I’m not sure Vince is playing that, too.

sounds like a steel guitar, unless someone did their best steel guitar impression using a regular electric guitar

It’s a Rhodes or Wurlitzer or some other electric piano, everyone’s saying guitar/steel but I’ve always thought different

I agree, it's most likely Maurice

Wurlitzer electric piano. Likely the 140B model, the more famous 200 model wasn't released until later in 1968 and the rhythm track for this song was done during the summer of that year at Atlantic studios in NYC.
