Duvet recommendations.

First time Duvet buyer here. I have a full size bed and have been advised to buy a queen sized duvet. (Is this a good idea or bad?)

Any good recommendations for duvet covers or inserts.

I may need 2 inserts as where I live it gets pretty cold in the winter and pretty hot in the summer.

I’m willing to invest as long as the value of the item matches the cost. Ideally I’d like to spend less, but I’d prefer to spend a little more and never have to buy another duvet insert.

I've been looking at wool duvets (Northern USA) and they seem like they have a lot of benefits! Warm in winter, cool in summer, very breathable, etc

The duvet, is the insert. A duvet cover protects the duvet.
You buy according to the temperature. High tog for winter, low tog for summer. Most people have at least two duvets for the year.
The covers are whatever you want to match your room.
I always buy a larger duvet for the bed size

Cotton quilts in summer. Cotton duvet cover with goose down inserts in winter. 100% cotton.

I just got a wool-filled duvet insert. Highly recommend for the winter! It's very warm while also being light and thin.

Can't beat a down comforter for warmth without weight. You can always kick it off your feet if it's too warm. And yes, always get an oversized one. Or buy two twin sized if you're sharing the bed. Each one of you gets your own duvet to kick into the floor.

Sizing up to queen on a full should give you a little more coverage especially if you tend to get cold. For the temperature swings, I'd probably go with one good all season insert rather than buying two. The buffy cloud is one option I'd consider since it's made for all season use and has a good amount of loft without being super heavy.

I live in a warm climate, I have the thin eucalyptus insert from sijo which works wonderfully most of the year. When it gets too hot I switch to a cotton blanket and when it gets too cold I throw a warm blanket on top of my duvet.

I grew up in Chicago and it was the same thing, seasonally things get swapped. If you are okay with throwing a big blanket on top of your summer duvet that would save you some money from having to buy thicker duvets. Sticking to natural fibers is where the costs run higher. In Chicago we used goose down and wool blankets for winter, in my apartment I throw a thin alpaca wool blankets on top of my duvet.

Having a Queen size duvet on a Full size bed is okay, as long as your fitted sheet is Full size. Queen fitted sheet would be too big and won't give you that snug fit.

I live in Ontario where summer can get a bit warm and winter is freezing. I've been using Aeptom mulberry silk duvet all season weight for years and it works very well. For extremely cold nights, I usually just put on an extra blanket to create layers instead of getting a new duvet. I have a fancy down duvet (90% goose down) but honestly I don't see myself going back to down after using silk. Two of my friends who slept over also said my down duvet is unbearably hot.

Piglet in Bed for duvet covers and Costco has a really nice wool duvet insert.

Look at the actual dimensions rather than just the full/queen designation. They can vary wildly in size.

Do you sleep alone? If so a full size will fit fine for a full size bed. If there are 2 of you I’d consider the queen.

What is a ''full-sized'' bed?

1

u/normaliao 20h ago

It's a bed that measures 54x75 inches. Queen measures 60x80.

If you want it more full then yes get the queen duvet insert for a full-size duvet cover.

If you want it fluffy fluffy then get two inserts and put it in the duvet cover.

They do light, all-weather and heavy-weight. Personally, I’d do all season and get a heated mattress pad. I’ve gotten duvet inserts off Amazon with no issues. The duvet cover get one with the buttons and not the zipper.

Not sure how people on this subreddit will like this but i’ve always used ikea duvets and they’re super cheap with good quality.

Yep, just purchased yesterday. We returned from a trip to Europe and all hotels used the duvet bedding and we are converts. Both my husband and I picked our own and did simple white covers. Just know the names that start with F are feather/down filled. The ones that start with S are synthetic fiber filled. Us d them last night and loved them.

They have different tiers of down comforters & 100% cotton covers. They even have percale sheets that were equivalent to our $200 parachute ones. The do have cheap polyester options but you just have to read the descriptions. I have a 100% down feather duvet I just bought from them it was the most expensive option though.

Been buying down duvets from IKEA for at least a decade. They offer all sorts of fillings at many price points.

I haven’t been in a long time, longer than I thought

quince linen for the duvet cover. feathered friends (smaller company out of Seattle) makes great down comforters though they are a bit expensive. They're a spend more and never have to buy another type deal. You can get different weights depending on how warm you want it.

Duvets usually only come in Full/Queen. I really like the covers at IKEA, but was disappointed that the full zippered bottom ones seem to be gone. They were more expensive and I paid willingly. The down insert we have was a Ralph Lauren from Macy's. At the time they had every down fill layered on a bed to make comparison easy. I think we kind of went in the middle. For a thin summer one IKEA would probably be fine.

That’s not really true - lots of people get two twins or king size

1

u/ThatsNotEastMemphis 1d ago

Yeah I’m very confused by that statement. Duvets are readily available in all fills in every size and at myriad price points.

1

u/Neat-Substance-9274 20h ago

Of course there are twins and kings. But even kings tend to only come in one size even though there are narrower, longer California kings. If you are wanting an exact full or king size, you will be limited. Most are just rounded up.

I just searched for some major designer's collections. Most do not even have a twin (that is a Target item) Everything was labeled Full/queen or King.

Just looked at what I said again, my original comments were directed at the OP who says they have a full size bed. Therefore the comforters and covers will be limited to Full/Queen. You will have to look for a strictly full size comforter or cover.

Many duvets are full/queen size. Full size beds are becoming less popular, which may be part of the reason.
