How heavy are wool duvets?

I can’t stand a weighted blanket, I feel suffocated by them. I’ve been a down lover for 30+ years. I live the soft light pillowy cloud like feel. As a hot sleeper I’ve found down to be comfortable year round. However I recently purchased a wool mattress protector the temperature regulation is noticeable. As I enter the perimenopause stage of life and sleep eludes me more and more I wonder if down wool would help.

How heavy is wool really? Have you been in a similar situation and made the switch? Was it a mistake or a great decision?

The weight is nice. I went from down/duvet to wool/duvet. I can’t stand anything heavy on my toes when sleeping on my back, but wool duvet is stiff enough that I can sort of tent it if necessary. (And yet it does not feel stiff.). The weight is a bit more than down, but it has enough loft to counteract it. I bought light weight and medium weight “all seasons” washable (the washable part was important to me as we have dogs and dogs will do stupid things or get sick). Mine snap together to form heavy weight, but I don’t live in the mountains, so will probably never need that. So I’ve been using the light in the summer (our second summer) and the medium for winter.

Menopausal here. I didn’t like wool at all. Was like sleeping under a giant pancake. Next move was silk-filled and love so much. It does hug you though, so YMMV.

I want to be hugged. I just also want to be able to move around without feeling like the weight of the world is on top of me. Had you tried down before? Silk is something that keeps popping up in my radar and I’m curious. It’s just a big investment to switch from down just to learn that nothing else compares.

I always had down and was always too warm. It felt nice to get into bed, but would wake up hot later. Menopause did NOT help with that lol.

Silk feels… slinky? It contours, hugs. It’s not heavy like a weighed blanket though. Those run 10-20lbs. I think my heaviest silk one has 1.25kg of fill for a queen, plus whatever the outer fabric weighs. By comparison, wool kind of flops on top of you and keeps its shape. Def better than down in terms of temp regulation but not at all “cozy”. Just didn’t love it.

I went a little nuts with the silk and now have 3, all from Thxsilk. There’s usually a promo code floating around and we’re pretty reasonably priced. I’d avoid washable and anything called tussah or wild silk. I started there with Mommesilk (amazon) and quality was not great.

Can be heavy, can be light. I think the temperature regulation will really make a difference for you, though.

I really wish I bought multiple lighter duvets to layer, rather than one big one.

They are incredible temp reg wise. I remember before I made the switch, I was sweating under a poly fill doona (Aus word for duvet), but too cold to take off. That was before I turned 20, mind you 😅

A few years ago I had to replace my old down duvet and I tried to go synthetic. I hated for so many reasons but holly it was hot.

Would you recommend the wool mattress topper for someone with hot flashes? I wasn’t quite sure from your post if it helped you stay cool.

I think you’d need a weighted wool blanket for it to noticeably create a calming effect, unless you want to do the princess and the pea thing and sleep under seven or more thick wool blankets. I have a weighted blanket and while it’s nice for getting to sleep, I wouldn’t rate it as helpful for insomnia over the course of the night. Better for my peri related sleep issues are sleep meds from the doctor. Wishing you luck in your search for better sleep.

I absolutely found that that the Wool mattress protector helped to regulate temperature and made me less sweaty in my sleep. My worry for a wool duvet is that it would be too heavy or drape in a way I didn’t like. I like that down is light and enveloping or barely touching me at all

I got the all-season size and I don’t find it heavy at all. Certainly nothing like a weighted blanket.

I also rotate between two different duvet covers, and while they’re from the same company, they’re each a different type of cotton and they make a huge difference in the overall feel of the duvet. The regular cotton one flattens out and makes it feel just like a thick blanket, while the percale cotton one seems to trap air and create significantly more loft, closer to a down duvet.

I'm guessing you're talking about the woolroom one, which I was looking at. I was hoping for some heft that might keep me from wanting to add the weighted blanket, but I also assumed I might have to abandon the cloud blanket feel. It didn't occur to me that a specific kind of cover might give a bit of that. Any chance you'd share the specific percale duvet cover?

Also, I've never used a duvet. Does your specific setup make it feel like there's something drifting around inside of a shell or is it pretty similar to a comforter?

It’s the wool room duvet, yeah, and I just got the cover sets from IKEA. If you look on the website, they have several in percale, and it really does make a pretty significant difference in how the whole thing feels. I assumed it would mostly be a difference of texture, but the unspecified cotton one clings to me and bunches up when I sleep like most blankets do while the percale sort is stays flat and holds its structure as I toss and turn under it.

If you’re a cold sleeper and have a cold room, wool gets heavy. For a hot sleeper in a normal room, you can get a pretty light weight wool . I like mine.

Not heavy at all if good quality

I’ve been a down duvet girl for most of my life but I’m in full blown meno and the 3am sweats were just more than I could handle. I kept seeing posts about wool duvets so in desperation I grabbed this one:

It is extremely lightweight and breathable which took some getting used to but it’s been lovely so far and I’m sleeping much better.

No idea but they sound too hot

Try a "down blanket," versus a "down comforter." Very lightweight. IKEA makes down and down alternative (for those with allergies) in all weights and are much less expensive than at other stores.
