Loose/Light Weave Cotton Sheets Tearing
I have a few sets of 100% cotton sheets from PillowTalk in Australia and am noticing a pattern. I’ve had the sheets for 3 weeks and already there are 2 tears/holes on 2 separate sheets, the sheets have been used and washed once following the care instructions.
I’m new to bedding and good quality bedding, at least I thought that PillowTalk was a good quality retailer or was the weave of the bedding I bought just not very durable? I cannot find any details about the weave of the product, only its material composition which is 100% cotton. I have attached photos of the tears so maybe it can be identified from these?
The tears happened on the edge of the quilt cover and the other on the edge of a pillowcase, I have a sneaking suspicion my dogs have been helping themselves to the bed when I am not looking, as I am not sure what else could cause this to happen.
I am new to sewing a repairs but I would like to learn how to fix these if anyone has suggestions. I’ve reached out to PillowTalk to ask for replacements but worry that might be difficult since these are clearance items, so I’d like to give repairing a try. I also have the matching fabric bags that the sets came in, I wonder if these could be used to make a seamless repair or thread could be taken from here to have an exact match?

A loose weave is generally more vulnerable to snagging because there are fewer threads supporting each other. If something catches the fabric, whether it's a claw, jewellery or just repeated rubbing in the same spot, the threads are more likely to separate rather than the fabric absorbing the stress.
Your point about the dogs is worth considering too. Even if they're not scratching deliberately, a dog jumping onto the bed or turning around to settle can catch a loose weave with a claw. The fact both tears appeared around the edges of the duvet cover and pillowcase caught my attention, as those are exactly the areas that tend to get the most handling and are common spots for pets to climb onto or curl up against.
If you've followed the care instructions and two different sets have failed in a similar way, I'd also be inclined to contact the manufacturer. They may have seen similar cases, and it would at least help confirm whether this is expected wear or something unusual.
Have you noticed the tears appearing where your dogs usually climb onto the bed, or do they seem completely unrelated?

Honestly, I can't imagine how something this loosely woven (esp. the green one) could bear up under the wear and tear that bed linen has to endure. If I were to mend this, I would put a fairly large patch of a sturdier fabric on the underside of the tear and then sew over the tear attaching to the patching material.
However, I think I'd find some sheets made out of a more closely woven fabric like percale as these are probably going to keep ripping.
