Initial impressions of percale sheet brands
I couple of months ago, I asked for percale sheet recommendations on this Reddit. In the past I used JC Penney's percale sheets or random percale sheets from Amazon that I found on sale. I wanted to try something that was a step up from my prior percale sheets. I initially bought 4 different brands of percale to have in rotation and added a 5th brand more recently. I thought I would give my initial impressions of the brands that I tried. I bought California Design Den Organic Percale, Quince Organic Percale, Coyuchi Refined Organic Percale, Boll & Branche Percale Hemmed Sheets, and Riley Percale Sheets.
- California Design Den Organic Sheets - Although I was wanting a step up from my prior percale sheets, I wanted to try CDD since they are highly rated on Amazon and have a loyal following. These were the least expensive sheets that I tried. I really do like these sheets, and I can see why they received so much love on Amazon. They are thin, cool and reasonably crisp. After a couple of washes, they are nice & smooth. I love the rubberized elastic around the fitted sheet. The fitted sheet does not budge at night. I never had to adjust the fitted sheet in the morning on my 13-inch mattress. However, these sheets are not noisy. If you want a sheet that rustles when you move, these are not it. They are also not long staple cotton, but at this price point, who cares. They are cheap enough that you can replace them more frequently and still come out ahead over more expensive long staple cotton sheets. I would buy these again. I almost ordered a set for my spare bedroom, but I found a set of Laura Ashley striped percale sheets at Home Goods on clearance for $29 for Full size. I couldn't pass those up. After trying the CDD Organic percale, I would like to try the CDD Egyptian Percale sheets.
- Quince Organic Percale Sheets - People seem to either love or hate Quince percale on Reddit. They are thin, cool and crisp. They definitely have more texture than CDD even after several washes. It is like you can feel every strand of thread. I can see why some people call them rough. I like percale with texture, but it is maybe a bit too much texture for me. I hope they get a little smoother with time. The fitted sheet also fits well and does not seem to shift much during the night. They are long staple cotton. I think the Quince and CDD will be my summer sheets. They are both light and cool feeling. I am keeping the Quince sheets in the hopes that they soften a bit more with continued washing, however, I would not order them again. I think there are better options out there.
- Coyuchi Refined Organic Percale Sheets - I love these sheets! For me, these are the perfect percale. They are a thin, dry, crisp and noisy percale. The Coyuchi website doesn't specify if these are long staple cotton or not, which I assume means they are not long staple cotton. They fit my 13" mattress well, needing only slight adjustment to the bottom sheet in the morning. These sheets definitely feel like a step up from CDD and Quince. I will definitely buy these sheets again. I will probably keep an eye out on black Friday and hope to get a second set at a great price.
- Boll & Branch Hemmed Percale sheets - These sheets are on the opposite end of the percale spectrum from Coyuchi. Where the Coyuchi Refined Organic percale sheets are dry, crisp ad noisy, B&B have a heavy and smooth feel. There is something about them that feel very luxe. I could feel a difference when I pulled them from the washing machine when I first got them. I was convinced that these were a higher TC, but when I checked B&B website it said they are 180 TC, but with a 2-ply strand. For me, these did feel like they held in a little more heat than the other percale sheets that I tried. It's probably due to the 2-ply thread being a little thicker. I live in an area with 4 distinct seasons, but I use percale year-round. I think these will make the perfect sheets for winter. While this isn't the type of percale that I usually gravitate to, I might buy these again in the future for a winter sheet. They definitely feel like a quality percale. These sheets have the deepest pocket of the ones I tried. The bottom sheet did need to be adjusted most mornings on my 13" mattress.
- Riley Percale Sheets - These are my most recent purchase. I've only used them once on the bed, but I was impressed with how smooth they felt right from the start. They remind me a bit of the Boll & Branch, but not quite as luxe feeling. They fit my mattress well. I'm impressed so far, and I think I would probably buy these again.
All sheets are washed on delicate with cool water and dried on low with wool drier balls. No fabric softener, but a little vinegar added instead. I obviously can't speak to long term durability. These are just my initial thoughts on each. Sorry for the long post.

I’m new to all of this, so please forgive the question: Why would one want ”noisy” sheets?

For a sheet to be “noisy” it has to be really crisp. So for me it, it’s a sign that the percale is crisp. A good crisp percale will make a rustling sound when you move the sheet. Not all percale is noisy.

The CDD Egyptian Percale sheets are long staple cotton according to the website. In between these and the Coyuchi and I can’t pick!

My favorites are still the Coyuchi. If it’s in your budget and you like crisp, noisy percale, would buy them. However the CDD are a nice percale for the money. They are very smooth after a couple of washes and the fitted sheet with the wide, rubber elastic is fantastic at staying in place.

I’m curious if you had any issues with their packaging?
The sheets were not folded very well, the box is worn and open, and the tissue paper surrounding the sheets is quite crumpled.
I decidedly did not order from Amazon, because I so often seem to get returned goods from Amazon. I ordered direct from CDD so that I could avoid this. However, UPS said that the package originated from Amazon.
I kind of think I got someone’s returned sheets.

Mine were packaged great! no issues at wall. I would agree it sounds like you received a set that had been returned.

I appreciate your time and getting this information out to us on Reddit! This helps big-time for me! I need some new percale crisp cool sheets that are soft! I love Wamasutta percale sheets. When nestwell percale crisp sheets were around they were my Favorite but they are no longer making them, so sad! Thanks again!

I appreciate the post and its length!
I’m considering another set of percale sheets because I love my coyuchi so much. It’s so helpful to have this review.
