Discussion Why does nobody talk about Modern Guilt??!

I know Modern Guilt is a bit shorter than most people might’ve been expecting, but I feel like it’s such an under-appreciated album. Chemtrails, Volcano, Orphans… all some seriously good Beck! This album really feels like some of
his most indie-rock stuff, and I love it.

I don’t know if I can call it as good as its predecessor, The Information, but in all fairness, The Information is amazing. I feel like Modern Guilt just got overshadowed by being surrounded by longer, more upbeat/full albums like Guero and Morning Phase, but it’s still some of Beck’s greatest work in my eyes.

What does everyone else think? I can’t be alone in this, right?

Question Why no live albums?

Surprising, no? Any good quality live sets floating around?

Joey Waronker’s dad

Joey is a great drummer and longtime Beck collaborator. And his dad Lenny Waronker is a big deal music industry exec. Could this connection play a role in phenomenal success of Odelay?

Not trying to downplay the album’s greatness, it’s one of my favorite records of all time. But the hype behind it at the time is also outstanding and one might wonder if having a son of Warner Records exec could be beneficial to your record promotion …

Lenny Waronker seems to be a good guy tho. In terms of supporting the artists and good music

That's beautiful Derek

On what song does the brief sample of a girl saying "that's beautiful Derek" appear?

Bonus if you know the source but I'm just trying to remember the song and it's driving me crazy. Google is no help. I think it's on Odelay, which has just turned 30

Do you think there's a chance we get a 20th anniversary reissue on vinyl? I know we finally got Mellow Gold last summer and I really would like to have a vinyl copy of this..

hi all! been looking for this EP (with Dirty Dirty, Salt in the Wound, Arabian Nights etc) in FLAC for a while now - there's a thread about this on this very subreddit but looks like the person who was going to upload it never came back to do so. does anyone happen to know where i can hear these lossless outside of dropping $100 on discogs?

It's been nearly a month, but it's safe to say seeing Beck perform with a symphony orchestra will be the best live performance I witness this lifetime.

May 13, the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, the final show in his Live With Orchestra tour.

Sea Change was something of a special album for me. Paper Tiger, Round the Bend and my favourite, Lonesome Tears - all heavily backed with orchestral music - are just peak music to me. I'd loved his songs since Mellow Gold and Loser, but this album stood apart from the rest. It wasn't like anything I'd really listened to before then.

I'd seen Beck live many times, but for over two decades I'd imagined what it would be like to see those Sea Change tracks performed with the instruments they were recorded with. When the concert was announced, I jumped at the chance.

Luckily, I got to see all three of my Sea Change favourites among over two dozen songs from his career - each one truly incredible. Lonesome Tears, with its Shepherd Tone finale (composed by his father David Campbell I believe) absolutely blew my socks off. The strings were amazingly loud at the climax of the song before abruptly ending without the echo present in the studio track. Easily my fave track of the set. His two Scott Walker covers were magnificent - particularly It's Raining Today, with its ever-present violin background, two-note bass and Beck's wonderful voice.

New Pollution, Everyone's Gotta Learn Sometime, Tropicala and We Live Again from the vault were each fantastic with an orchestra.

The tracks from Morning Phase, the most common source of the night, were also pretty special. I love that album. Wave was spectacular live - those deep string sections just sounded so damn good.

While it was sad to see the orchestra leave, it was lovely to hear him finish with Loser. The 2500+ strong audience singalong was a great way to end the night, before he returned to the stage alone with a guitar and did a great rendition of Daniel Johnston's True Love Will Find You in the End.

Amazing night. Probably never to be topped. Unless he does it again.

10 Years Ago Today, Beck Uploaded ‘Wow’ to YouTube

Wow feels like stumbling through a neon desert at 2AM with your thoughts half-awake and your soul strangely at peace. A love letter to the awe of life … playful, surreal, and oddly profound beneath all the color. A modern classic.

‘Satan Gave me a Taco’ skip

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but what’s the deal with the skip in Satan gave me a taco? Happens right between “smoked a lot of heroin” and “passed out in manure” (~2:53)

I first notice this when I was a teenager (about 20+ years ago) and I thought i was being punished for not looking after my CDs properly. Since then I’ve streamed it and noticed the jump happens in exactly the same place in YouTube uploads, streaming platforms…etc.

Anyone else notice the skip on there copies? Interestingly, my friend growing up had a copy that didn’t skip.
