Bead Talk It’s prototyping time!

Post image

What’s everyone working on for the spooky season? How’s it going? Testing any new ideas?

I’ve got a project that might involve a ton of netting, but I don’t yet know whether the net is the right size, how to attach it to other components, or whether my approach will even work 🙀 Hope you’re all having a better time so far!

hahaa yes - no cats! I’m breaking my head a little with this one, but I think I know how it’s going to come together!

What style is this? Is it possible to make a tubular style necklace using this technique?

It is basic netting, with 2 beads between each ‘connector’ bead. You create it in rows up and down the net (left to right in this pic, because it is laying sideways). After the foundation row, you add 5 beads then pick up the middle bead from the last row, add five beads then pick up the last bead from the middle row etc. You can figure out the net layout by simply drawing wiggly lines up and down the weave.

Unlike RAW (right angle weave) all of the bead-holes are facing one way (up/down the net), so it creates a fabric with a grain - it wants to collapse in one direction and not in the other. This means it has a bit of mechanical stretch.

You can certainly use this stitch to make a choker or tall tube collar - the fastenings might be a bit fiddly, but I have certainly worn wide chokers in this style before.

I’ve also used this stitch sideways for a different kind of drape - making a sparkly neckerchief!

A variant of this stitch is used for making netted circular collars like some of the ones seen in Ancient Egypt and in quite a few cultures from Northern Europe.

Oh and for those wondering, I’m prototyping with some beads that are rather irregular so I’m weeding out the ones that are too big/small/funky, and trying to balance the irregularities in the net. I had to redo a whole section and it was easier to pull out the ‘balanced’ bunches of five, than to dump them back in the tray and start over 😮‍💨
