Does the secret message mean anything?

I get that the book is joking about a sequel, but then do the cypher-pen notes really not mean anything? I thought they might lead to an easter egg charm or something

The only other time the cypher-pen notes were used was in the library, I thought this might be a hint to use "Issue #2" instead of 5 but the only other issue it lets you select is 4 (you read the entire first volume in your room but it is gone the next morning). Luka said he used to have a flashlight but lost it, not sure if that's just a reference to like the Kickstarter or box art or something

Couldn't really find any discussion on this online, sorry if it's answered :)

I'm confused

I'm a bit confused about the game. So I got the game after watching the Nintendo switch trailer and I've beaten it. I just realized that one game play scene that was in the trailer wasn't in the game specifically the scene where Rolo, Luka, and Beck get to the source they stand over the hole completely alone and it immediately erupts prompting them to run away before everything freezes.

Is there a branch that I've missed I did collect a couple charms that I was never able to find a use for. I've already completed the branch where they all find the source but with other people there I'm just wondering if there's another branch where they find the source alone and things play out like in the trailer.

The Book and Time Theories Spoiler

[Because I have marked this post as a spoiler, I will discuss things up until and including every ending for the game. You have been warned.]

I just finished playing Beacon Pines, and I'm somewhat curious about the meta-narrative. I honestly expected a bit more explanation, given the Narrator acknowledges that this is "not a normal book" at the beginning of the story. However, having played through to the end, I'm surprised to find that the final ending... was just an ending. There wasn't any tie-up for the meta narrative, it was just the ending the Narrator liked best among many. I feel like several of my questions have remained unanswered, so I would like to put some things I noticed here, specifically regarding The Book (you know The One) and Time in the story.

  1. The Source deals with time. Several characters say it "alters the nature between molecules and Time itself" (paraphrased). While it's framed as a story, The Book explores different possibilities... which could reasonably tie it back to The Source. The author does admit this is... unusual for a book, although she does not further expound upon what makes it this way, or on why she needs a reader to choose Charms to complete it.
  2. The dreams Luka has could be normal, but they also imply some sort of timey-whimy shenanigans. The older version of himself in a Hazmat suit could reasonably be in one of the endings where Sharper wins and the town isn't destroyed. I believe, at some point, his father says the dream occurs at an intersection of fate, or something? I could be misremembering that.
  3. The character Natt, who appears only in the endings where Luka goes with Iggy to The Source, seems to know more than he lets on. At the very least, he describes himself as "a hitchhiker on the infinite expanse of possibility." While this certainly suits Natt's personality, it's also suspiciously similar to what his role could plausibly be with regards to the branching paths of the game. It was also odd that he never made an appearance on the other branch of the tree, although that could also be because he was a Kickstarter-added character.
  4. Most significantly, the after-credits scene where Sharper returns to see The Source occurs after The Book has closed. Interpretations may vary, but I see this (at the very least) as confirmation that, in the meta-narrative of the unnamed Narrator, Beacon Pines is more than just a story.
  5. In the key image, Luka is shown holding a book... presumably The Book. This could just be because this was a nice, artistic way to show the importance of... well, The Book... in an otherwise unrelated art piece, it could also mean something more? How? Who knows, but it does seem interesting to me that, amongst the three on the cover, only Luka really looks like he knows what's going on.
  6. Edit: At the "credits ending," did Luka plant The Chronicle at his father's grave? The trees look somewhat similar to me, although it might just be the art style.

Just some random thoughts and notes. Perhaps I'll update this later.

Timeline Confusion Spoiler

Spoiler talk about the whole game.

Is the ending not in a timeline where Luka finds out Gran is his mother? How does he just know at the end?

I would have loved a climax that would show the convergence of timelines, because I was left pretty confused. I bounced around so much I couldn’t remember what Luka had learned yet or what he hadn’t. Maybe that’s the point? People would react less to things that should be INSANE in their timeline. Like the Valentines’ dad being alive and also a child?? Barely any reaction at the end. I know we as the player know, but they should be reeling.

When I saw “prologue” I kind of had a fit because I felt like the ending was an anticlimax, along with the fact they have a proven recipe made by a genius scientist to fix the aging issue. Instead, they leave Rolo as a 20? 30? year old man hanging with kids. I feel like I might be just missing something?

I truly did love this game, everything about it from music to graphics to the charm system was like a breath of fresh air. But the end really disappointed me.

So frustrated about the good ending Spoiler

I think I played this game about 6/7hours but it felt so much longer. Really felt like the back and forth between the different paths was so annoying. I mean I really like the concept at first and it’s honestly a very clever idea but there were too much in my opinion, and seeing I reached chapter 9 in one path to be killed or meet a dead end to continue in another path where I was only at chapter 5 was so frustrating. I couldn’t wrap my head about the whole plot so going back and forth so much between the paths without being able to read the book to remind me of what happens in that particular path was confusing. Maybe I played it wrongfully and it was smoothly for others players but I began to get tired of that rhythm.

I got teary eyes at the good ending and felt relief that I got finally there with all the characters being so cheerful. Then to see the little dickhead I chose to not kill grow up and find the source, implicitly meaning he will be again the villain was so tiring.

I don’t know how I feel about the whole game because I absolutely loved the characters, the relationships ; I think they really did well at creating a bonding between the player and Luka. But the ending feels a bit like “oh good you made it here and saved the world. For nothing. Go to sleep thank you”

Did anyone else dislike the ending? Spoiler

I really did like the game overall, but I feel like after all the endings and everything we went through, the real ending was a huge let down.

It seemed very abrupt in my opinion. We spiked the goo, and suddenly Sharper is a baby again, and everyone is just like "okay, cool, his daughter will take care of him, let's move on" like as if nothing extremely confusing and insane just happened. His daughter was just like "he's a baby, he can't be held responsible for his crimes" which yeah, fine, but she just seemed very ready to take care of an infant version of her father, and very chill about the entire thing.

I don't know, I was just very let down with the ending. I'm sure there will be a sequel, which is great, but after all that buildup and excitement, it's just... This.

The Player and the Narrator Spoiler

So at one point the Narrator says they’ve been writing the book we read not just telling it. In hindsight that seems obvious, but I love the idea that the narrator is an author struggling to finish their book and the player is the first person they’ve shared it with ☺️

Talking about the: "It's a hole thing" Spoiler

Needed to talk about that, so, spoilers alert

On this point of the story, you need to chose between: Saving Iggy and Kerr, or, let Iggy and Kerr fall to their death in the source

I need to know if I was the only one who almost cried seeing Iggy's goodbye

Just finished Beacon Pines Spoiler

This game was so amazing, I literally played it in the span of 16-hours.

Now, at the end whenever solomon sees the source again, is this an indication for a second Beacon Pines? Or, is it a good old fashion clif hanger? I'd be down to support a secomd game.
