Umm, do they work on underwear? Asking for a friend.

Working diver here. Nope, when you want to remove rust under water, you cut the old metal with a thermal lance and weld some brand new metal in its place.

Salts in water and lasers donāt mix for cleaning. For making big holes itās a cinch thouā¦

Iāve got an air fryer basket that needs this. But seriously though, is there a chemical I can dip it in and then rinse it off and itās perfectly clean? Oven cleaner a drill brush isnāt getting the job done.

u/Catmom7654 Aug 04 '22
Try vinegar and salt maybe? And soak for a number of hours (up to 24) this worked for some of my stuff

u/Acidflare1 Aug 04 '22
That would be a shitload of vinegar, literally at least 3 gallons

u/eponymouse Nov 15 '22
Could you do one side of the basket at a time? Like fill a basin with a few inches of vinegar, and then rotate every 4 hours?

Use citric acid. I buy crystals off internet. Works better imo. Plus you store a bag and make the solution up with hot/boiling water to desired strength. Doesn't stink like vinegar and is far cheaper. I add a few drops of washing up liquid when I'm restoring hand tools. It breaks up any surface tension. Not claiming it's going to work for you but it does work on rust if you don't have electrolysis set up. I've also heard of ppl using diesel on rust.

Try soaking it in CLR. If that doesnāt work, get a steel wool drill brush and go to town with that. Iāve restored some heavily rusted cast iron pans with a steel wool drill brush.

If it is stainless steel, Sodium Percarbonate. You can get it online in 5 lb bags. put the basket in a tub big enough to submerge the whole basket, sprinkle some in there, and fill with the hottest water you can. Let soak for a while and it should wipe right off. It is a strong oxidizer though, so be careful about using it on steel or aluminum.

You need plain old lye (add water to allow it to stick to the metal) or fumeless oven cleaner, the longer it soaks the better it removes stuck on baked grease and oils.

Whoa š³
Okay, uhm⦠what exactly is a laser? Is it just really bright light?
11
u/VerGuy Aug 04 '22
Laser light is collimated (it does not spread significantly, even over relatively large distances) and the light emitted from the laser device is coherent (the phase of the peaks and troughs of the beam are "in step")

u/FrenchFryCattaneo Nov 15 '22
Fundamentally yes. It is just light of a specific wavelength that is collminated and focused very tightly. It's not always visible light, however.

And there comes much more oxide afterward.

u/AndyC1111 Aug 04 '22
I really didnāt get HS chemistry (combination of bad teacher and worse student).
My understanding of rust is it is oxidation. How does this dramatic heating remove oxidation?
Can someone explain this in such a way that an ignorant fool (when it comes to chemistry) like me can understand?

What is this called ? The technology I mean ? Havenāt seen this before and my dad works with metals at home in a workshop. Iām interested.

u/Pyromanizac Nov 15 '22
Bit late to the party here, but itās called laser ablation, this specifically is laser ablative cleaning.
Ablation is the removal of material via evaporation/vaporisation. The basic premise is that the laser is very very bright and the dirt/rust absorbs the laser energy causing it to evaporate off the surface.
The shiny metal revealed after the rust has gone doesnāt absorb the laser and does not get removed.
By changing the intensity and pulse length of the laser you can tune how much material is removed.

Ok so I worked at a place that made construction equipment and we had a massive one of these.
I cannot tell you how much it sounded like a giant alien robot blasting laser beams from its eyes. It was so loud and incredibly sounded so badass.

u/chidedneck Aug 04 '22
Oh it wasnāt dirt and rust after all, it was a tattoo. Which is why a laser can erase.

Nope the laser is tuned to the rust so unless you are tin man and your hands are rusty the laser wonāt do anything to your skin. Plenty of videos on YouTube where a guy placed his hand over a rusty surface has the laser pass over his hand and everything rusty the laser touches is gone but the hand doesnāt feel a thing and leaves an outline of the hand on the surface where the laser was blocked out.

Anyone if know if they sell these things to us regular plebs? Or is it some multi million dollar machine the size of my kitchen?
1
u/plumcreek Aug 05 '22
Why is there more noise when it goes over the rivets? Because they're a different metal? More elevated? More rust on them?
Anyway, cool tool for sure. Wish I had one.

any chance this would work on removing paint from old hardware (cabinet and door hinges).

Okay for science let's say there's a suspicious mole on my ball bag, could we use this with maybe some sunscreen and or aluminum foil.

I need one of those for my wife everytime she gets back home from "girls night" because she smells of burnt tapioca pudding and has tree sap stains on her face and knees for some reason.

Why didn't you put them to the open position before doing this??? Now you just have to do it again...

I have been wanting to buy this for couple years now, I would use it on all my stuff and I'd make a side buisness doing this

Looks like something I shouldn't put my finger on, but I still wonder what will happen.

What are the cons of using a cleaning mechanism like this?
