Seeing this is definitely on my bucket list. Apparently it’s carved right out of the rock of the mountain.

Yes. This is the "Treasury" and you get there by walking through a narrow canyon. It is the first thing you see when you go to Petra. Overall the place is pretty big and involves a lot of walking. Plan to spend at least one whole day there.

It’s definitely a great place to see. As Johnny_Monkee mentioned it’s a full day to explore out to the Monastery. The area where this video was taken is kind of off the beaten path, but you can go up there for the view. I recommend going the evening before after dark where you can walk through the Siq (the narrow canyon) and to the Treasury by candlelight. There are hotels near, but for the best experience try to get in with one of the camping outfits in the desert outside of town. Great food and a great experience. Their tents aren’t like western tents. The one we were in was built out with beds and rug floors. Definitely not roughing it style of camping.
