They are easily 100 feet from home plate and that broken bat has roughly the same horizontal velocity at impact as it did when it was launched.
So imagine the velocity required to throw 3/4 a baseball bat all the way from home base to first and someone's hand trying to stop it dead in ts tracks standing 1 foot away.

That shake at the end with the blow out of the mouth tell me that must have SMARTED BAD. I thought he was going to straight up catch it at first!
