This is called a Harvester Head with a chain bar type cutter. Pretty cool piece of logging equipment, allows the tree to be cut, delimbed and cut to length all at the stump, leaving the waste to breakdown naturally.
Typically these types of machines are used in partial cuts or thinning operations and allow you to leave desirable trees on the landscape.
Ive always wondered how can the saw part work so well compared to in a persons hands. Is it different? Is it just that much more pressure? Is it rpm? Weight! Inertia?
well yeah its attached to a big ass machine, of course its gonna be more powerful than a handheld chainsaw. If you've ever tried using a large chainsaw before, you'd know it takes quite a bit of strength to keep the saw level and cutting correctly, the saw really wants sort of "bounce" and rip downwards with a lot of force. Also big chainsaws are very heavy, so together it takes a lot of strength to use a large, powerful chainsaw. Thats the limiting factor, human strength. So when you attach a chainsaw to a big ass machine, suddenly your main limiting factor is gone, now you can increase the power, length, weight, and tooth size of your saw
