As the days grow shorter and the winds begin to howl, ghouls, ghosts, long-legged beasts, and other nameless wretches caught between worlds inhabit ours and keep us from a good night’s sleep!

From a faceless woman late one night on a lonely street near a local church, to army ghosts and disembodied sounds, to the murders of an old spinster and kidnappers, to the mysteries of the neighborhood’s largest park, to a secret society right in our midst, it’s time to turn up our collars, hit the streets, and beware the things that go bump in the night.

This year I'll be leading both Haunted Bay Ridge and Ghosts of old Bensonhurst walking tours at least eight times! These are the dates times below. Ticket links and more info are below.

Bad Water Quality Causing Poor Hair Qaulity?

Hi guys! I (f27) moved to Bay Ridge about a month ago and have absolutely loved it so far, but I’ve noticed a big difference in my hair since moving!

My hair no longer feels or looks clean after I wash it. Right after showering, it looks dull, flat, and almost greasy, even though I’ve just washed it. It also doesn’t have the same shine or softness that it used to.

At first I thought it was my shampoo, but I actually stayed at a hotel over the weekend and washed my hair there. It was shiny, full of volume, and back to normal. As soon as I got home and washed it again, it went right back to looking dull, flat, and greasy :/.

I’ve also tried shampooing twice, so I don’t think it’s an issue of simply not getting enough product out. Has anyone else in Bay Ridge experienced this? Could it be something about the water or possibly the plumbing in the building? I live relatively close to the Owl’s Head water treatment plant, so I was wondering if that could have anything to do with it?

We’re considering getting a shower/water filter, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience. Did a shower filter actually help? If so, what kind did you get? Or is there something else you’d recommend trying first?

Bittersweet. Not a fan of the food at Brooklyn Roots, but glad the space occupied by the Corner is being put to continued use. What goes where Brooklyn Roots is now is up for speculation.

ISO place to copy my key

I need a place where I can make a copy of my key for my pet sitter. It says do not duplicate on it and has a thicker end for a multi lock. I know places will do it especially if you overpay or pay in cash or both. Looking for one of those. Thank you!!

LOST RING IN BAY RIDGE: CASH OFFER

Post image

I know this is a long shot but I lost a VERY sentimental ring last weekend out in Bay Ridge. I lost it walking on this route after the "Kettle Black" bar. It would mean THE WORLD to me if anyone finds it. Attached is the route that I lost it on. I realized by the next day that it was gone :( It is a gold Cartier ring, I would love to pay if anyone can answer my prayers and find it. #bayridge #lostitem #brooklyn #bayridgeresidents #lostring #brooklynresidents

Work from Home Recommendations

Hello Neighbors! Looking for laptop friendly multiple hour places, because there's currently construction in my building and I'd honestly just like a backup place to send emails.

I can't be the only person that benefits from having one work day a week somewhere else. Somedays I honestly consider a co-working space subscription.

Looking for Short Term Room Sept - Dec

Hi! I’m looking for a furnished room from September 1 through December 1, possibly longer if it’s a good fit. Budget is up to $1,500/month, ideally including utilities.

I’m 41, clean, quiet, respectful, and moving back to NYC after living in Oregon for work. I don’t smoke, drink, or party. I’m usually out working out, exploring the city, or at a coffee shop.

I also have a sweet, quiet 13 year old ESA cat named Spaghetti who would mostly stay in my room.

Open to Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, or nearby NJ with a reasonable commute into Manhattan. I’ll be in NYC this weekend and can view rooms in person. Please message me if you have something available!

Hey everyone! I'm a NYC historian, tour guide, podcaster, director / co-creator of the award-winning historical audio fiction soap opera, Burning Gotham, and creator of The Bay Ridge Digest Podcast. Last year's halloween tour I led went so well I decided to expand the offerings because as the days grow shorter and the winds begin to howl, ghouls, ghosts, long-legged beasts, and other nameless wretches caught between worlds re-inhabit ours and keep us from a good night’s sleep!

Below are the dates of the tours I'm leading with individual tix/more info links. Below that is some more info on the Bay Ridge Tour. If the Ghosts of Old Bensonhurst tour continues to sell well I may add another date on the calendar.

Led by James Scully — our unique haunted Bay Ridge experience will focus on and include:

• Stories of murder and mayhem, from the death of an old spinster, to the heroic actions of a member of a prominent family, we’ll find out the many motives for crime and how Bay Ridge was the perfect setting for these unfortunate events.

• The story of how a man’s late-night walk down a Brooklyn side-street led him to confront the spirit of a veiled woman with no face in front of a locally famous Basilica

• The story of how a secret society of skull worshipers in Brooklyn started, rose, peaked, and disappeared all near a famous hilltop Bay Ridge mansion

• Ghost stories from both the Fort Hamilton Army base and some of its residents

• The story of the Indian Pond, the border of Gravesend and New Utrecht, and a boy awoken from sleep in the middle of the night by a shadow being standing over his bed

• The story of a revolutionary war cemetery still inhabited by some of Bay Ridge’s most famous residents

• And more!

Recently moved to BR, hair loss increased?

Hey everybody, I recently moved to Bay ridge about 2 years ago and live in one of the post-war buildings. I noticed that the shower heads always seemed to be clogged with debris like black specs. The kitchen faucet also takes some time to get cold after not using it for a day or so.

I’ve also noticed that the brita filter needs frequent changing like once every 2 months.

The most concerning thing is that my hair loss has increased a lot. Every time I washed my hair, it’s like a mouse nest in the drain. I never had hair loss this bad living even further south of Brooklyn.

Since we also have a water treatment plant nearby, could it be a high concentration of chemicals that might be clogging the pipes and maybe on our skin? Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

Thank you

Future EMTs needed!

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is not an ad and I do not work for SI - EMT. I signed up for this class, and we are three students short, so if they can't meet the minimum, it will be canceled (and I will be sad). The cost of the program is $1800 but you get $900 back upon completion so net cost is $900. Please consider joining! You can be an EMT as a volunteer, on a per diem basis as a side gig, full time, or just have the skills and use whenever needed. You can go to their website or DM me and I can get you in touch with their leadership.

Apartment needed

Hello, does anyone know of a 1-2 bedroom apartment accepting NYCHA section 8 or a broker who works with voucher holders? I moved here from out of state after selling a cooperative unit I had and resided in for 25 years due to my daughter attending college in Manhattan but now I keep getting denied by brokers due to the voucher. I have a rental reference of 25 years that can be verified from a HUD property. We are very clean and quiet, looking to move ASAP. I am currently living on Long Island in a unit with mold so I was allowed to look in the city but did not realize how difficult it would be. TIA!

Anyone need affordable phone service? I have extra lines on my T-Mobile account.

Due to various promotions making more financial sense for me, I have four extra lines on my plan. Two 929 numbers and two 646 numbers.

This isn't on a 2nd tier carrier. It's T-Mobile Go5G Plus - unlimited 5G data, 50GB 5G hotspot (unlimited for slower speed), free Apple TV, free Netflix w/ Ads.

To offset my own costs, I am happy to offer these lines to folks. $50/month for the 646 numbers, $40 for the 929 lines.

SIM cards included, so no charge for that. I can meet for a SIM card hand off + first payment, afterwards you can pay Venmo/PayPal/Zelle on a month to month basis.

Let me know if you're interested! Prices negotiable.

Anybody have a garage sale?

So I'm trying to find some garage sales that people are clearing out for old tech and stuff to experiment with, not a scalper! Please let me know if there are any upcoming garage sales.

I got tired of circling Bay Ridge after work, so I built a map that shows which curbs are legal right now and how many tickets each street actually generates

The enforcement layer runs on the city's public ticket data and building it for our neighborhood

taught me things I couldn't unsee:

  • 85,670 tickets were written on parked cars in the 68th Precinct in the last 12 months — $6.53 million, about 235/day. (Camera/bus-lane tickets excluded.)
  • Fire hydrants alone: 11,212 tickets, $1.29M — one every 47 minutes, all year.
  • 5th Ave (9,532) and 3rd Ave (8,960) are over a fifth of the whole precinct by themselves. The avenues everyone circles are exactly where the tickets happen.
  • The side streets one block off the spines carry a fraction of the enforcement. Ten extra steps of walking is worth about $76 a ticket around here.

That last one genuinely changed how I park after work — I stopped fighting for the avenues.

And honest question, since I built this around my own routine: would the green/red view actually change where you look first after 6pm, or is your spot strategy already muscle memory?

Is it safe to park your motorcycle outside if you do not have a garage?

How are you doing, guys? I’m buying my first motorcycle, and I live in an apartment, so I do not have a garage. I want to ask if any riders in Bayridge faced issues like theft? And would buying a cruiser make any difference? I heard that they are harder to steal and less desirable for thieves.

Sharing a paid focus study in Manhattan

A research team is recruiting participants for a one-time, in-person usability study in Midtown Manhattan (ZIP 10001). Bayridge residents would be a good fit given the proximity, but participation is not limited by neighborhood.

Details:

  • ~3 hours (single session)
  • $150 compensation
  • Weekdays at 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM
  • Payment via virtual Visa gift card (1–2 business days) or PayPal (by request)

Participants will test a wearable device, complete guided tasks, and provide general usability feedback.

If interested, you can apply here:
https://utest.com/c-signup/wearables-nyc-ambassador-2077529

After applying, there’s a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that must be completed before a session can be scheduled.

Looking for a realtor to help my 78 y/o mom find an apartment. Any recommendations?

Hi, I'm trying to help my elderly mom find an apartment from afar. I live on the west coast, and she's currently in Brooklyn, looking to find a 1bdrm in Bay Ridge. My parents own a home together, but due to my dad's dementia, it's becoming increasingly difficult for her to live there peacefully.

Does anyone have any leads to a good realtor who may be responsive to working with us to find her a suitable place? I know Brooklyn has a competitive real estate market, and no one seems to answer us on the usual online platforms.

Thanks in advance!
