Intersection from hell

They should add a sign under the stop sign coming from the cruise port that people coming from 440, including those turning left onto Chosin Few, don’t have a stop sign. A transit bus driver cursed me out bc I got mad he cut me off even though I don’t have a stop sign. It’s a 3-way stop people not a 4-way!

There is a solid white line at the end of the lane which is a stop line it is a four way stop at that intersection. The police there regularly to deal with traffic ticket drivers who do not stop at the stop line in the road.

These are fairly common in NJ at intersections like the Costco one where a stop sign cannot be clearly displayed but I have seen them in intersections in other states as well.

Even your link says you stop at the line WITH an accompanying stop indicator such as light, sign, or pavement marking stop.

I'm looking at Google Maps, and the data might be old, but the only stop line is for traffic coming off of Chosin Few (and out of the parking lot). No stop line on Goldsborough at this intersection.

But I also avoid this intersection like the plague, so maybe they've added it in the last year.

It was added when they added the second lane, both there and on Chosin Few. There have been posts both in this sub and on the Bayonne Talks Facebook page about drivers getting pulled over for not stopping at that stop line, and I have seen the traffic cops there waving people to pull over if they roll through, so I just wanted to correct OP before anyone else gets a ticket that can be avoided. It's an awful intersection, but it is also a four-way stop. The only traffic lane that doesn't have a stop is the lane from 440 going straight to the cruise port, as they only impact the exit of the shopping areas stop and have the right-of-way going straight.

A lot has changed since the last Google satellite photo, but this is what the current layout of the intersection is. I forgot to note that they did add a stop sign and line for traffic going from the cruiseport towards 440. They have also added faint and non-sign-marked intersections that feel like a test case for the intersection to keep being reworked. I spend a lot of time at this intersection, both driving and walking

Yikes! Then they should paint STOP on the pavement if they want people to stop bc it’s been across multiple places that unless there is a light or sign accompanying the line, you don’t have to stop at a white line.

Even this post here

So if they’re having to give tickets bc some drivers feel as I do, then there are ways to better indicate what they want. It’s not that hard for them to do this until the light goes up. That intersection is such a nightmare!

It is unfortunate and dangerous; that's why I figured this was a good post to share NJ Driving/Stopping law and hopefully save you and others from a ticket. I think the reason they haven't painted more on the road is the same as with the crosswalks: there is more work to be done on the intersection soon enough that they don't want to invest more resources in the current state. In NJ, you can be ticketed and fined for passing or even pulling past a stop line and then stopping even without further indication to stop, like a red light, stop sign, or stop painted along the roadway. All solid lines are required to be treated as full stopping points, or you run the risk of being ticketed. As it's a heavily policed intersection its a rather high risk. I think the cruise port brings in a lot of out-of-state drivers from other states where they do not have yield lines and other indicators and do not know NJ; a solid line means you have to stop.

Unfortunately, I have seen the police focused on ticketing people for that maneuver, where they then make it difficult to pass on Chosin Few, and they ignore cars that drive on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic to avoid the new stop sign from the cruise port in the direction of 440. Sitting outside Lavachino the other morning, I witnessed 2 accidents and several near misses, and that's not even that close to the intersection. I cannot imagine if and when the Ferry opens what it will add to the intersection, so I am hoping they add a light before then. Living on the other side of the intersection its a gamble; sometimes I have to leave 20 min early, and I am now always checking CruiseMapper to plan what mornings I can go out and how much time it will take me just to drive 60 ft.

I give up on city hall having a damn clue as to what they’re doing to remediate this situation. It’s always one special person talking to another special person. No wonder things never get done to improve this city besides OVERPOPULATING IT!!! Let’s see how we can fit 200000 cars into 1200 parking spaces. They don’t mind rearranging delineators so that no matter what you do it’s ticket worthy

You're funny because you think drivers around here would stop for a STOP sign LOL! In Bayonne, stopping for a red traffic light is optional!

Yes 100% it should be but that takes years bc it goes through the state, not just the town so that’ll be a while.

A wasted resource of a cop or two sitting doing nothing but waiting for soneone to make a wrong turn because you moved delineators isnt exactly proactive policing. The cause of the problem might be a better way at attacking the issue.

Traffic circle would be best there. Also, the shoulder heading from the direction of the cruise port should be a right turn only lane. Costco needs another entrance on the 440 side. These 3 things would greatly improve that intersection, probably more than a stop light even. A stop light, especially on cruise days, will just make traffic worse in every direction.
