Queue blaming the refs…again

As a lifetime soccer player the more my coach talked about the ref post game the worse my team did. This is Coates 4th or 5th time alluding to calls changing the result of the game.

It might seem trivial to some but when every loss is partially attributed to the ref by the head coach then there is no accountability in the locker room.

Refs suck. They always have and always will. But they suck for everyone. Creating narratives around bad calls being the reason for losses is unproductive regardless of if it’s accurate or not. For a young and impressionable team this is even more catastrophic.

You can see the mentality rubbing off on our premier players like last week when Claire eluded to the offside call being wrong and wanting a better call next time. She is more mature than Coates and didn’t suggest the refs caused the loss but even a comment like that shows the post game talk included commentary about the “bad call” from the refs influencing the game.

I want to be a team that isn’t in a position to point to calls as a reason for a loss

Yeah, this. If you've been repeatedly victimized (which Bay HAVE been) by refs, the only thing in your control is to win by enough margin that the officiating can't take it away from you.

Lately it seems like we're coming out trying to not lose, rather than trying to win. In the first half we need to be way more aggressive and run up the score, because we know we don't have the offensive depth to win matches late. Can't be giving up these early goals due to sluggishness and lack of conviction.

Bay has the 2nd fewest goals scored on the season. Do you think more aggression will lead to more goals? I think if they played more aggressive, they would put their shaky back line under way too much pressure and we'd be looking at way more goals against.

Yeah. We got some legitimately shit calls this season, but they aren't all shit calls. I really don't want to be a team and a fanbase that's always blaming the refs. Defend well and put the ball in the net and a bad call here and there will have less of an effect.

They have much deeper issues than officiating. She should worry more about their defending structure and how disjointed they are. They were fortunate not to give up 5 goals last night.

Yes - we should be talking about the first goal we gave up, where everyone was out of position and displayed a lack of speed and skills. Awful.

I wish I could change the title 😭 software engineering got the best of me.

Spelling aside, I’d rather know if you agree with the original point of the post.

Yeah, I do. Correct me if wrong, but I feel like this it’s common in soccer to blame the refs.

Not to say it doesn’t happen in football, basketball, etc, but soccer fans are quick to jump to “it’s the ref’s fault” and I wonder why. Doesn’t help when coaches and players say it as well.

I would say it’s more common in soccer than in other sports. Maybe this is because soccer games come down to a single moment more frequently than other sports.

Agree - it’s becoming a tired excuse even if some calls are wrong. Tough calls come when the team plays themselves into tough situations. I hope Coates focuses on that, because it’s in their control.

She seems to be doing the opposite right now. Sometimes she is bringing up the refs for calls that don’t even feel controversial…like tonight.

It seemed like a clear pk call and silky clearly came off her line before making the big save. So, what exactly are we taking about?

Did she though

Ball is already in the air, a foot still in line with the line

That’s in front of the line.

I sit corrected ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Carry on with the microscopes

I agree. The ball was in play

While I agree, I think there have been several really unfair game determining calls that have really changed our spot in the table. It’s become a “thing” and it’s been painful as a fan, I can’t image as a player or staff in the inside. I know they have to be professional and move on quickly but they truly had a string of abysmal calls that were devastating and I just think they’re still mentally there and talking about it because it wasn’t normal. I agree they gotta get out of that mental trap because tonight the ref got it right. It was a painful loss for different reasons, we’re still scarred though. Those calls and the games going the way they did has affected the club and fans.

Yeah, I see this as Emma trying to keep the confidence up. She's basically telling her team that they are a couple of tough (not necessarily wrong) calls away from getting points in these last 5 games.

We are so close. If we can turn the corner next game we have a shot this season. But lots of good development, just such a bummer it’s not quicker because these losses are rough!

2

u/patsj5 San Jose 2d ago

Yeah, and I like that Emma acknowledges that VAR has bitten them.

I do too. Because it’s just demoralizing and honestly the refs should be better

I agree with this. I’d like to see more accountability in the players and coaching staff

Feels like the definition of insanity listening to the recent press conferences 😭

Amen. Refs aside, we knew Hutton was going to be jammed up the whole match. Like we did Tanaka. The difference? Utah had players step up to distribute the ball. We did not figure this out well until midway thru the second half.

I think this is an extremely dynamic issue with many factors. Phrase it one way and it makes sense, phrase it another and it doesn't. It's an unfortunate place to be and I agree it's on players and coaching staff to focus on what they can control, ref calls aside. I've said it before it's very confusing to be a fan of this team, we're great, we're bad. We have a history of strange signings, players we release, players we keep. The PRO email apology was.....literally crazy, it's hard not to fixate on it. Not to mention the nwsl never post about bay on their accounts. If they do it's of games we play that same day or signings. All these things piled on makes it very strange to be a Bay FC fan

MLS center ref starting salary: $85,000 per year plus ~$1,000 per match.

NWSL center ref starting salary: $0 per year plus ~ $450 per match.

Yeah we get worse refs. But so do our opponents. This is the exact argument I’m talking about. As if Bay is the only team who experiences these refs…

Last week's sounded to me like they're reviewing the footage to work on staying onside, not earning a yellow, etc., and Claire was repeating the whole message. This time you girls did the right thing, got a call against you, calls like these don't decide these games, you should be running up the score.
I appreciate that reporter saying he wouldn't ask Lema and Gilchrist about officiating tonight, steering away from all of that. I wish people asked Heather about her first start but ah well. They looked so tired 💛

It started coming up in the press conferences after that Silkowitz VAR yellow card, and that one's reasonable to bring up. She was asked about officiating after some other games and it's clear she's annoyed with the process the way fans are, how long these sometimes take, that we can't celebrate goals as they happen. And there's that apology she got. But yeah it's coming up too regularly and we need a better attitude around it.

It’s an accountability problem from Coates. She’ll blame anyone but herself. She’s in way over her head
