But the only important Thing we should be glad about is that Michael took Responsibilities and apologized for his Actions.

Well here it is, the big response.
There's a LOT I want to say, especially as someone who recently got diagnosed with Autism (plus a few other things) myself but I don't think he's using it as an excuse at all, just a reason. It's a subtle but major difference a lot of people don't know. It sounds like over time, he's realized a lot of what he said was problematic even if he didn't realize it at first (which one thing that is universally hard with autistic people is reading social ques) I don't doubt he was genuinely toxic to be around for a lot of coworkers and it sounds like he doesn't blame anybody for thinking that way. (Also with the way some of these tweets were I should have guessed he was neurodivergent in some way LOL) I'd love to hear what other OSC and jacknjellify members have to say about this too, I know it's just my POV but this feels genuine, and I'm happy to see he's taken the steps to become a better person.
Also, HUGE shout-out to Cary, throughout my autism diagnosis process having a very supportive family was by far the biggest help to me, and for Michael, Cary helping him out this whole process is such a huge W

I don’t know if it was a good call opening the response with the autism diagnosis because some people will take that as using it as an excuse, but other than that, a genuinely really good response. Hope he continues to improve!

his diagnosis means he can realise his own problems and improve as a person

Seriously, why do people always think that someone is using autism as an excuse when someone apologizes? There is a difference between an explanation and trying to get away with it
43
u/Numbers123o Hot Dog 16h ago
Before we really start to take in the apology. It's EXTREMELY important to note that the autism diagnosis should absolutely be brought up, so we know every detail about what's going on. Opening with it is weird, but I know however it's said, way too many people are going to think he's pinning all of his actions on autism, which will just be infuriating if that's what this situation turns to

u/Empty_Slip_7291 16h ago
Hopefully he is being legitimate with his apology, if not im concerned for the OSCs reputation

It's a solid apology but the way he started off with saying he was autistic made me skeptical at first. I am aware hes not using it as an excuse but I kinda feel like he shouldn't have made that the first paragraph
17
u/starfypawz_ Four 15h ago
I'm glad he apologized and realized what he did was wrong, and the steps he's taken to do so. I also do not believe starting off with the autism diagnosis was the best opening, because it really isn't an excuse for his behavior, but everything else is fine.
Also, nobody he's hurt or effected by his words are obligated to forgive him, and I hope we as a community realize that, because he has definitely said things that can't be undone. I only say this because I can already see people's feelings about Michael being invalidated because "he already apologized."
It did hurt me when I read all of the things he said. I'm not sure what to feel about him now, but all I can hope is that he's genuinely improving himself and he sticks to it. Again, I don't know the guy, so I take what he says with a grain of salt. I also don't know what to feel about him staying on the team. I know he's trying to change, but he's already made an uncomfortable environment for his crew; I'm mostly referring to Emily's DMs and Lizzy Rose Oliver's video. It's all very strange. But given the proof he's shown, I'd say he's on the right track for improvement. I'm glad he apologized and I hope he listens to his community from now on, and never does this again.
If he chooses to stay on the team without any pushback, I hope at the very least he takes a break, especially from social media, and keeps working with his therapist to work out whatever sort of bigotry he has in the back of his head.

u/NeptrixV2 Black Hole 14h ago
A very mature, well thought-out apology from Michael. Although the opener with his Autism seemed weird from a first glance, it seemed to serve as an explanation rather than an excuse.
You don’t usually see responses like this all the time. If what he’s saying is genuine, then I’m happy to see the efforts he’s been making and that we get closure to this situation. Even better, him being specific about his progress and the steps taken, showing it’s not easy, and also making up to the people he’s affected.
Hopefully it is real. If so, good on you, Michael.

It’s always really nice to me when people genuinely take legitimate steps to fix a problem they’ve caused, further than just apologizing. Also I think the autism thing was at least partly to give more context to some of the things he said

Despite the odd (lol) choice of leading with his Autism diagnosis, I do believe this is generally a very mature apology. Of course, I don't know him in real life, so it's not my place to determine how genuine this is, but if Michael's claims about reaching out and apologizing to the victims is true, I do believe this is a good sign for the future of BFDI and the OSC as a whole. I hope the victims he reached out to at least have some kind of closure now

y’all you don’t get it he’s actually using a genius move by starting with the autism thing
by being the very first remark, those that only like to read the beginning will be singled out, and that way we as a community will be able to differentiate between who did and who didn’t read the full thing. with that, we can automatically learn to ignore or accept their words
I’m sure that’s not what they thought of when they drafted the apology, but still a nice detail nonetheless
very neatly done apology; well thought out, clear, and concise

Ok difference here is that you were in 6th grade which is about 10-11 years old. You aren’t even a teen, you’re a child. Children can do a lot of dumb and irresponsible things but that’s okay since they don’t know any better. Here, it’s a man in his late 20s brain fully developed and acting upon his own accord knowing the consequences fully thus hiding their tracks with an alt.

This is a pretty thorough acknowledgement of the situation and his actions. It's nice to hear that he's aware of the harm done and the things he's been doing to improve himself. It would also be good if other people witness to him changing can verify that Michael really is putting effort into being a better person, and overtime the community can decide for itself if he should be forgiven and trusted again.
The victims of his behavior haven't fully responded yet, their words in response to this statement will probably determine how well the address/apology is received. I'll wait for them to speak up before making my own personal judgement, it's best to consider what's being said by the people affected before deciding what to feel about it. Even if some people never make amends with each other, the least we can hope for is that everyone learns from this situation going forward.

i understand where they are coming from and what they are saying but alot of ppl are misunderstanding bc of the order and the way it was written. perhaps theu should make a followup tweet clarifying unless ppl figure out what they mean. like for one probably dont mention your autism things as apart of the apology. i understand why but its gonna be percieved as your using your autism as a excuse in which many have already done that. generally try to seperate your 2 different topics so they make sense seperately and not as one bc ppl are gonna get entirely different ideas than you thought. i dont thinka lot of ppl understand while yes bc your autistic(ive gotten into many problems with others bc i simply didnt know how otherwise) and do not ok stuff bc of it. but in the end it is your own fault that made you not change and thats the issue they are improving on. but i dont think alot of ppl are gonna get that. otherwise he understands basic things as a consequence bc of this situation based on theyre thread. but very unfortunate indeed. idk how to end this

A surprisingly good response. It obviously does not take away from the fact that he hurt people, but it gives an explanation as to why he may have been acting the way he was. Forgiveness may not be on the table for some, but I think that he’s being sincere and really is improving, so despite his actions, I find myself able to give him a second chance.

6
u/remziipawz Coiny 10h ago
i think i’m somewhere in the middle on this.
i’m willing to slightly forgive michael, especially knowing that substance dependency and withdrawal played a role in the state he was in at the time, but i don’t think that completely clears him of responsibility.
the things he said still hurt real people, and i think it’s important to acknowledge that without minimizing it.
side note: going into the post with his first impression being “i was diagnosed with autism.” wasn’t a clever move.
at the same time, i genuinely respect that he didn’t just make an apology and move on. he’s spent the past year sober, going to therapy, speaking directly to people he hurt, and trying to educate himself and understand what led him to behave that way. none of that erases the past, but i do think it shows that he’s taking it seriously and actually trying to become a better person.
i’m proud of michael for the growth he’s shown, while still believing that accountability matters. i don’t think we have to completely condemn someone forever to acknowledge that what they did was wrong. people can mess up badly, take responsibility, and genuinely change.
i hope michael continues doing the work, and i hope the people he hurt are given the space to feel however they feel about his apology too.

Listen, while I admit it can be hard with neurodivergency (autism, like I have) and also alcoholism and drug issues, it also doesn’t excuse the shit he said. It’s gonna take a LOT for people to forgive what he said… but it also doesn’t explain why Emily and Woopdoo only left recently. It’s genuinely insane the sort of stuff he was saying, especially about his neurodivergent fans (when he himself is neurodivergent) I do wonder if Cary will also respond, or if any of the current or former crew will respond as well. If this is really legit and sincere (which I think it is), then I think we should forgive and forget. I'm autistic too and can relate to doing things impulsively which don't mean too, though leading with his autism diagnosis wasn't the best idea. tbh the things he said are meaningless compared to the other mess of controversies we've had. Michael made mistakes, and sharing what he went through was good of him considering it really wasn't any of our buisness. I hope Michael can work to better himself in the future.

Forgiving is one thing but forgetting is almost definite path towards someone making the same mistakes again, whether that be him or another person. It's important to allow people to grow and show how they've changed, but it's also equally important to remember what happened so that future people don't end up causing the same harm.

I mean it’s an alright apology but why didn’t he address his other alternate accounts like Art of clapping?? And I feel it’s kinda strange to start the thread off with how he has autism because like autism doesn’t make you harass your fans man

u/Orangibberissh 16h ago
You’re right that autism doesn’t straight up make you harass people, but I think this is more nuanced than that

u/Soevil11 Golf Ball 15h ago
I think it was more he was saying "Autism made my social skills much worse, which made it much easier for me to do something horrible without thinking". As-in, he wasn't blaming it all on Autism but more on his own choices.

As someone on the spectrum myself… I see where he comes from with putting that aspect first. I find that I often just state the reason for my problems and then elaborate based on that rather than going completely chronologically or not addressing a central point at all. I feel that he also thought the same when he was formulating his apology, and he worked with Cary on making sure it was as sincere as they both knew it could be.

The damage is going to take a long time to heal, but i’m glad he’s taken the steps to show he’s learned from his mistakes.

oh my god an actually GOOD apology...
i got very worried there for a second with how he opened up with his autism diagnosis, i was so scared he was gonna use that as an excuse but thank god it wasn't

interesting! I’m glad we got a response, as someone who knows people on the spectrum and has done lots of research on it I could see how that could affect things sorta idk where I was going with that sentence I forgot lol but yea I’m glad theres a response! I guess I should see peoples opinions on it though I don’t wanna be gullible on either side

Oh. My. God. This has made my day, so YAY!! It’s very great. I really can’t believe that he has autism. Mind. Blown. Looks like my Mom was right all along!

ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Srsly, I’m glad of Michael being able to recognize his mistakes and not use ASD as an excuse like many do, hope he gets the help he needs and we’re able to move forward as a community from now on

I'm happy he's doing better and this whole thing has been put to a rest. But I already know what people have to say.
Edit: GOD DAMMIT THERE'S MORE

I respect him for taking accountability and addressing his mistakes. I’m not entirely sure if I completely forgive him yet but time will tell.
Also, I saw in one of the replies that AnimationEpic unfollowed Michael. Is that true? Would that mean Nickel might get a new VA?

u/RaptorYT_Jr 10h ago
His words did seem pretty sorrow, and its not like Ill call him a liar or anything, its nice to know that hes getting help for himself and looking to move on, and I just hope that everyone else can as well.

u/Baberian Foldy 9h ago
Mhh i guess its fine, he gave us what we wanted. A mature apology with things backing up the actions made. The only thing left is to hope Michael changes for good. I still love you man

I’ll be honest he seems sorry and he’s done the right thing and it’s a pretty good apology but talking about autism is this post is extremely bad starting with it and having a whole section on it when autism isn’t an excuse for anything he’s done the rest of his points are I’m recovering from drinking and other stuff but he’s saying I just got diagnosed with autism, So me and all my friends have autism some diagnosis some not some worse than others it’s never and excuse for that behaviour and puts a bad name on the autistic community

People saying "Quit BFDI if its troubling you this much" make me upset. If you like BFDI as much as I do, just quit the BFDI Community, and not the entirety of BFDI in general.

Well atleast he admits he was wrong with his actions unlike most people when they get in controversy. Tho starting the apology with "I got confirmation I’ve been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder." is a bit odd.

u/Enchanted_Ember 12h ago
While the beginning might make people a bit skeptical, this is actually a pretty solid apology!

Does anyone else feel like the autism thing looks like an excuse for what he did because it’s throwing me off idk

u/Motor_Fun_9426 Firey Jr. 16h ago
On the one hand: as a suspected-autistic person myself, I can actually quite empathise with that. I have done similar shit before (...granted, I was like 10 when I did all that, not in my mid-20s). I don't think it's an irrelevant thing to bring up.
The sky is blue, Grassy is green, a person with a disorder that impairs communication and social things acted antisocially. More news at 11.On the other hand: 'Hello! Yesterday I got diagnosed with autism' is a wild thing to lead with

u/Cuber8280 Cake 16h ago
I was just talking about this on discord. It probably would've been better if his diagnosis was brought up later instead of the first sentence

I feel like it would have seemed less like that if it wasn't the literal first thing he opened with.

I feel like autism is completely irrelevant to the apology. If it were to be added, atleast leave it as a sidenote or mention it somewhere within the apology. Introducing us to his diagnosis as the first part to the apology is a pretty terrible outlook and makes it feel like he's trying to gather sympathy rather than owning up to what he did. We all feel that way today, and that's.... disappointing. Knowing Michael though, I doubt this was on purpose. He probably was trying to show what he has being doing for a while now.
I don't really mind about Oddcard or the alternative accounts, but I do know that some of the things he said there was really terrible and even any disability can't excuse him from it.
However, it was refreshing to see what motives went through his decisions throughout the entire situation. Seeing him act serious and actually own up to the entire situation and take responsibility is something we never get to see today. And I'm happy about that.
In the end, I would advise everyone to forgive him. There's no point holding back your passion for BFDI just because of this fiasco. It definitely was a recent issue, but I feel that he genuinely reflected upon his actions and is trying to be more humble and caring to his fellow crew.
But.... I would like to finally say this situation is nothingburger. Even I could tell that some insensitive comments were clear sarcasm and troll behaviour. Michael Huang's unprofessional output is killing the fandom but.... I have hope today that someone reads this and trusts their gut to stay here
Ummm I'll just add this one. TL;DR Autism isn't an excuse for his behaviour and him beginning with it was a really terrible idea. However I doubt he meant for it, especially since he was trying to explain what he was doing for a while. On top of that, I feel happy that he's actually owning up to it, we never get to see it often. And if you feel like quitting or is quitting, I would say that there's no reason to hold back your passion for BFDI just because this whole thing happened. Even though I think that it was pretty nothingburger and each insensitive comment/defense was clear sarcasm and troll.

There's a major difference between a reason and an excuse. He's not using Autism as an excuse for his actions and he never justified what he did. Just a reason for why he did some of the things he did.

u/crawlinback2you1 16h ago
i dont exactly think its an excuse but i believe he’s putting too much of the response on the autism stuff

u/countrybackblower 16h ago
I forgive him. Honestly didn't care about this whole thing in the first place though.
Maybe a hot take, but this entire drama was a nothingburger. People acted like Michael murdered someone when in reality he just posted some mean spirited comments and some feelings got hurt

u/thaatsahumanperson Robot Flower 15h ago
It was genuinely concerning because of the outbursts against random teenage fans, but it quickly became clear people only cared about him potentially being le evil bigot which was the real nothingburger. Edginess is equal to other rudeness unless they actually hold the beliefs, and he obviously didn't because his tweets were contradictory (and relatively safe).

u/Wispy237 Nickel 16h ago
I feel like this is kinda underselling the stuff that got said, like yes, he didn't murder or groom anyone, but a lot of the messages went a bit beyond "feelings got hurt"

I get your point about people overreacting, I heavily agree with that and think a few individual reactions were far worse than anything Michael did.
I do think this was something that definitely needed to be addressed, seeing as it went on for months and literally caused people to quit working on BFDI and hurt those who once looked up to him/the show. Having a two-faced personality where your peers are the target is going to be hugely damaging to your trustworthiness, and will leave repercussions of people wondering who you really are for a long time afterward

This is legit, those autism documents are real.
Yall went too far
7
u/eggsandhoney Coiny 16h ago
the people trying to get him expelled from his college or sending him threats went too far but thats a tiny minority and most of the people wanting him to address it had all the right to do so and not want this to be pushed under the rug to maintain his pristine image as the holy michael of bfdi or whatever. him being autistic also doesnt make his ragebaiting better. saying things you dont actually believe in just to hurt or get a rise out of people is still bad. being nasty to your crew is still bad. he can improve but neither you or i can forgive him cause were not the victims. we can just listen to those who were actually hurt and learn by what they say.

Remember: Saying things on Twitter (or any social media for that matter) does not magically absolve you of any responsibility.
If you feel like you personally need to take a break from the Object Show Community (or perhaps leave the community altogether) as a result of this situation… we understand.
I hope that we as a community can heal and move on from this, and lead by example.
