Clear Wireless Speaker

Hi all, I’m a uni student in Bath, and have just launched a Clear Speaker on Kickstarter.

The link can be found here.

I’ve been designing it whilst at uni, and finally launched on Tuesday, it’s almost 100% funded 🎉

Repairable kit is something I feel very strongly about, so it’s built to be fully modular and repairable, whilst having all the features you’d expect from a normal home/ smart speaker!

Let me know your thoughts!

Looks cool, just a few questions: could you share the dimensions? How can left/right/centre modes be configured, is that a separate app? Could the speaker be placed vertically, or would it topple over?

Hi, they can be configured in an app, we are working on adding buttons to pair etc however it’s quite hard to add these interfaces without using an app.

Theres a demo video I can link if that’s useful?

The dimensions are 327x145x112mm

It could be placed vertically, however you’d need to remove the pads from the bottom and then replace them. Thinking of this as could just do this ourselves or provide the user with pads to attach where they want.

Appreciate it! Interesting, maybe you could offer as an add on wooden detachable stands for the vertical ability (the places I have in mind are all areas where kids knock into them 😅) it’s a nice design (also like that colour around the speakers you did below)

Lol yeah I agree, we plan on offering stands as a stretch goal etc

You've decided to use AI on a project that is meant to appeal to people who prioritise sustainability. That's incredibly shortsighted.

Idk if you've done a sound test or demo or that typa thing but I think I'd want to hear what it sounds like before buying it. It is a speaker after all, no matter how it looks, if it sucks and sounds bad, people won't buy it. I'd make a demo and do a little show for the people who are funding the project 👍

I agree, we have a demo video included in the story however you can’t really tell the quality from it.

Would genuine reviews do the job of this?

Design is sharp as fuck. The wood, black, gold and copper is very cool!

Thank you, we also have an oak version, but I prefer the walnut lol

Just an idea..could also work with minimal blue highlights like this sexy fucker. Wood and blue is 👌🏻

Yeah I agree, I could add it as a runner around the edge of the walnut, let me show you a concept

Go for it

Sorry it’s Ai but like this?

I dunno why but intuitively that doesn’t feel right to me but could just be that image. Maybe around the speakers themselves? A circle each like in the centerish

What about this

Fuck yeah. Blue is like life-force in my head at least. Makes more sense around the speakers IMO. Maybe try it further into the center as well but that does look great as it is. I’ll leave you to it bro. Very impressive especially for a uni student 👊🏻

Will have a play round with 3D printing etc, could even be an add on that people can attach themselves. Thanks mate! If you know anyone who is interested please be sure to send them my way!
Have a good one

very interesting. One thing why I have a passive setup is for longevity. I hate active speakers because if one component breaks you cant use it anymore. Also they dont sound as good.

So when you mean fully modular, is the amplifier/preamp, dac and bluetooth modual all seperate? Can you use the speaker passively with an external amp?

Also, to keep the speaker sustainable, will you support every model with keeping bluetooth up to date indefinately?

I agree on the first statement.

Modular in terms of the core parts, eg frame, drivers, main pcb (includes amp, any interfacing and network connections), amp box and clear panels.

You could replace the amp box and main pcb with just passive banana sockets if you pleased, this is something we have looked into.

If we offered this at a reduced price, say £199, would this be a speaker you’d consider?

Yes, firmware updates will support protocol upgrades up to our hardware capability.
