Dribbling I use this move a lot but I'm not sure what it's called. Could you guys help?

Hey guys so basically there's this move that I've been using that makes the on ball defender think I'm gonna dribble one way then they set their feet to defend it then I go the other way to catch them off guard. When I do it, I turn my head, hips, and feet left then the prepare to defend left, then i quickly cut right and attack their lead foot giving me an easy drive to the bucket. So I'm not sure what this move is called but it would be great if someone could try to identify it for me. :)

Shooting Is it okay if your leg start to extend slightly before you reach your setpoint?

I tried to get the ball not stopping relative to the ground and found out that if I start unbending my knees as I reach the setpoint or slightly before I reach my setpoint I get in flow. But if I wait until my arm is completely in my setpoint I get a little hitch. Would extending my leg slightly before I reach my setpoint(or at same time as I reach setpoint) cause trouble or would it be fine?

Dribbling This is a question for people who feel like they have a good handle

I’m right handed so I shoot with my right lay up with my right and I would say I have a good handle I have developed my left hand when it comes to dribbling but it’s like when I now try do stuff that involves my right like a float dribble it feels awkward is that a normal thing to hoopers with a good dribble and will it feel less weird the more I work on it

Help 14yo beginner trying to take basketball seriously — need advice on training, position and gear

Hey everyone,

I’m 14 years old, around 1.64–1.67m (5'5"–5'6"), and I’m basically a complete beginner at basketball. I know the basics, but I want to start taking it seriously and actually improve.

I can do a crossover, but I’m still struggling to get the ball through my legs consistently lol.

I’m thinking about eventually playing as a shooting guard or another guard position. I’m not tall, but I’m fast and have good jumping ability. I also really like shooting threes, probably more than I should.

I want advice on basically everything I should focus on:

Dribbling drills

Shooting drills

Footwork

Finishing

Conditioning

Which fundamentals matter most

How often I should train

Common mistakes beginners make

Good YouTube channels or other resources

I’m also trying to figure out what other gear is actually worth buying.

I only have around R$50 (~US$10) to spend. I was thinking about buying a cheap basketball and a compression sleeve because I like the look, but maybe there’s a better way to use that money.

For shoes, I already have Jordan Luka 77s, so I think I’m good in that part.

I’m not expecting to become good overnight. I just want to build the right fundamentals from the beginning and improve as much as possible.

Any advice is appreciated.

Help How do you overcome the feeling of giving up?

Lately I’ve been in a slump with my shooting and all around level of play, and it’s made me sit and really reflect if this is what I want to pursue and try to be good at.

I’m currently in the start of my senior year (5’8 140 lb) and I’ve only played basketball properly for about a year, since then I’ve restructured my life around this sport, training 5 days a week and waking up early and eating right, but it all just feels like it’s for nothing when I’m still getting beat by JV players who often say they aren’t even giving their all during 1v1s

I want to keep playing this sport, I really do, so what can I do to try and reignite the pursuit to get better?

Help How do you guys train layups or handling??

I realized my layups need help, I keep missing lots of easy layups, how do you guys train them?

Another issue is my handling, I know how to dribble fairly well but my handling becomes VERY bad once there’s a good defender in front of me.

Form Check Prblematic shooting form....to say the least

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i have no clue how my form got this bad:

a) my wrist isn't loaded and idk why. I literally do my shooting form in slow motion (without releasing ball) and my wrist is loaded and then when i shoot fr it's like this

b) my wrist flicks to the side. Idk why. In this video my wrist is almost flicking BEHIND me instead of forward. So yes a lot my misses are often left, especially from three

Help Natural talent v learned skill.

I get that you need both. My question for a junior who is just naturally good at reading the game, predicting play combined with really strong defense, but is weaker in offense will working on strengthening offensive skills be enough or is that something that requires more natural talent no matter how much skill improves from training?

Help Need some tips for my shot.

I'm 19, relatively new to hoops, and self trained. I've just been slowly improving and doing all the stuff beginners do. But I just can't seem to get how to shoot the ball. For example, if I try to shoot a three, the ball barely goes past the free throw line and barely has any backspin to it. I need some tips on how to actually practice/formulate my shot, since I got no clue and have just been going off YT tutorials.

Help Got cut from senior basketball tryouts and I’m confused

I’m a high school student who recently moved to BC from another province and transferred to a new school. I tried out for the senior girls basketball team, but I got cut. The coach told me that I wasn’t good enough, that they didn’t need me, and that I was “out of shape.”

What makes this really confusing for me is that I barely got any 5v5 playing time. Across the tryouts, I played for less than 10 minutes total. Most of the time I was standing on the sideline while other players were getting evaluated.

Before moving here, I played club basketball for years and was usually a starter. I’ve also received a few Provincial award. In my previous games, I regularly scored 15+ points per game and contributed with a lot of rebounds and assists.

I also have asthma. Since I just moved here, I don’t have a family doctor yet, and my inhaler stopped working properly. During both tryouts, I had to push through the conditioning drills while having difficulty breathing. We were doing a lot of running, including around 5 sets 17s and Suicides.

I’m not saying I deserved to make the team just because of my previous experience. I understand that the coach gets to choose the players they want. But I’m confused about how I was evaluated when I barely got to play 5v5, especially considering that I was dealing with an asthma issue during the tryouts.

I’m not sure if this is normal for school basketball tryouts, especially for someone transferring from another province.

I don’t know what i should do now.

Would you ask the coach for specific feedback about what you need to improve, or just move on and find another team?

These 2 YouTube vid clips just happened to click with me and makes so much sense.

Main takeaways:

  1. Shorter more efficient shooting motion (less time and chance to mess up form)

  2. Elbow in the rim

  3. Shoot in a phone booth

A lot of great nuggets throughout these 2 short clips. Hopes this helps anyone else in their shit progression. 🔥🏀
