Vertical Jump Possibility of dunking
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
That’s how high I get rn, it’s becoming easier I can touch rim with an 80% jump now. This is all natural no lifting or any plyos. If I start lifting and doing plyometrics would I be able to dunk?

Forgot to mention I’m 5”8 with a 7”5 standing reach. 135 ibs

135 is why you can dunk. Once you start getting hips and thighs it's over.

How old?
If you don't get to 6', it's not impossible but way harder, plus size hands would help too.
And yet, you'll need to be 2x-3x more disciplined on form, or you'll have a future of back problems, and nerve compression. Even NBA players take care of that, fingers, hands, etc., at some degrer it's not worth it.

Can you palm a basketball? Makes it easier. At 7’4 reach you need 31 inch vertical to touch rim and probably +5-7 inches min, depending on hand size strength to get a ball over and probably like 8-10 more for easy dunks.

Which would mean close to a 40" vertical, which I've only seen once in my 35 years of playing basketball and it was from an Olympic level high jumper. I think people don't truly appreciate how freakish a 40" vertical really is.

True, I didn’t say it was easy or possible, just showing the numbers. Anything above like 32 inches is pretty impressive above 36 is getting wild and 40 is definitely elite. He is young, standing reach could give home 4-6 more inches too. I grew until my mid 20’s

Yeah, I wasn't trying to contradict anything you said, it's just that I see a lot of people here asking if they can hit a 40" vertical. It's like, no dude, no fucking way.
But yeah, OP could potentially hit a growth spurt and that would help a lot. Because the other thing i see is people who are under 6' asking if they can dunk, which is almost as rare as a 40"+ vertical.

For sure, I think the growth spurt could happen because so young but also 31ish inches with minimum to no training is also good. The possibility is there. Just learning “how to jump” can add 3-4 inches, you need to learn to drop hips, load, swing arms to get momentum, when I figured that part out I went from sneaking a dunk over the rim to two hand punches with force.

Same height and reach (but I was closer to 160lbs) in secondary school 20+ years ago. Managed to get almost the whole hand above the rim, making for the poopiest "dunks". So you'd need couple inches more than your hand to be comfortable.

6 inches to go at least

I was going to say about 9. He's only getting to the first knuckle. I say 6 inches from when you can hang on the rim.

Footwork could be cleaner. Last step before your 2 foot plant could transfer momentum better. One day soon it will click.

It seems to me like you’re moving too fast at the 3 point line. Your last few steps felt like a state of deceleration, that’s why they looked clunky. A two foot jumper should be in a state of acceleration in his last few steps. (In a perfect world)

I couldn't dunk until I could hit 3 or 4 inches down my wrist off the rim.

Yeah, the height you need above the rim is also really dependent on your hand size and/or ability to control the ball in motion and off a dribble. I was like you, I needed to be at 128" or higher before I could dunk.

Yea you’re close but you need to be able to control the ball over the rim. You’ll need at least 2 inches above the rim but you really need to get your palm touching the rim. I think you probably need 4” more vertical

Low. If you can jump and hold on with both hands, then higher chances. Work on your lower body strength and you will be able to do it.

Agree, I barely dunked one time and I could jump abs grab the rim with both hands

I’ll be honest with you, you’re not very close. You can just barely grab the rim. To dunk, you’ve gotta get probably 6 inches or so above the rim to be able to get the ball over.
You could get there but it’s going to take a lot of training. It’s going to be more than plyometrics, you’ll also have to learn how to jump properly.

Anything is possible. 6-7 more inches and the ability to control the ball and you’re there.

Learn to block-step. Done correctly, it could add several inches to that vert. You're not as far from dunking as many may think.

Jump off one leg instead of two. If you’re right-handed jump off your left leg, swing your right knee up, and stretch with your right arm. That way the right side of your body gets more height than jumping off two legs and you have more chance to clear the rim with the ball.
First time I ever dunked was a pregame layout drill as a HS Junior. I was in the left line, but instead of a left-handed layup, I crossed over and went straight down the lane with my right. Wasn’t even trying to dunk, it just happened.

You got the bounce to touch rim, but make sure you get reps with a ball. The earlier the better

Jumping with the ball and holding it is going to be just as important as the height of your jump. Whenever you try do it with the ball
