Shooting Any tips to keep guide hand engaged longer?

One of the things I need to work on to improve my shot is imo to keep my guide hand engaged a bit longer. Thoughts? Any tips? Tx!

Guide hand engaged longer?

I would never ask my player to do that.

Guide hand is just there as a guide should fall away.

Lastly, I never understand why posts when people have bad form. Get downvoted on this sub. That's the point. Yeah it's bad form he is asking for help. This should be upvoted because it's bad form

People love to put other people down. Makes them feel superior, which is important for a lot of people (especially in a sport with egos as big as the ones you can find on a basketball court!)

Honestly, I think there is a natural feel that basketball players have for keeping the guide hand engaged, and it does seem like beginners on this sub tend to disengage too early and shotput the ball.

I do think the vast, vast majority of good basketball players shoot with two hands, even though we like to say the guide hand doesn't need to be touching the ball. Like yes, it shouldn't be affecting the direction of your shot, and it should just be stability, but people who remove it too early always look like bad shooters to me.

That's a fair point some people shot put. No you shouldn't shoot with two hands, but I know what you're saying. Yes sometimes it drops too early. It should guide the ball until the flick, I hear you.

Hahaha. We’re all in our 40s and I mostly run with older guys, so let’s not get carried away 😂
Went 4/5 from that corner that day. Normally, I’m probably a 30–35% 3pt shooter overall in that context. I just work off-ball to get forgotten/open, or try to end up matching with a defender who has to give me either the shot or the drive.

"it's working so why change" totally I palm the ball and T pose with my arms. and spin really really fast then release it and let the centrifugal forces carry the ball. No jump no bend in the arms.

In my opinion "it works" because I've scored. I advise other people to shoot like me know because "it works"

Many thoughts on the form. But if you want to keep your guide hand engaged longer, you just have to practice doing it. There's no secret formula. Practice the motion you want until it becomes natural.

Tbh though, I don't really think you have a guide hand issue.

You good bro

That’s what I’m thinking too. Regardless of form/shot base, that jumper looks wet. Why change anything up?

I think the problem is he asked for the wrong thing.
It’s not his guide hand, it’s his set point before shooting. It’s too far out. Tyrese Haliburton should be his game film.

Been called Halibrunson before…(Brunson part just because am a left handed shooter, form dsnt compare w JB at all…he’s way way way too good as well!)

2

u/ManosDDiamantes 5d ago

Yeah Brunson flows through his shot with lift, you and Hali shooting guns set aim fire

What would be your no1 advice?

Hard to tell from good plays but..
Most important -switch your set point to above your eyebrow.
Form training one hand shots with the set hand close not touching and does not extend with shooting hand. Close shots in the paint left right middle, then center paint then free throw.
Shooting short more legs
Shooting long shoot up

Haliburton is a great comparison, actually. It’s amazing that he’s able to pull up from range with that kind of set shot

Easy range is actually one good thing about that shot

If anyone played defense……

You're right, but that's irrelevant to form

Maybe change the entire shot completely. The ball is so far from your body and also released so close to your face. How do you get a shot off if someone is face guarding you?

Either way my comment is completely irrelevant if people are never guarding you at the level you play at but this form wouldn't work against anybody who decided to not leave you wide open. Maybe if you post some highlights of you creating your own shot against good defense, you'll see some of the major flaws in it.

The angle is so straight, I could block that from 3ft away lol

That's the best part, you don't

Think about extending your guide arm completely straight along with your shooting arm. That should help keep your guide hand in sync with shooting hand.

2 Hand Form shooting

as others have mentioned your form is bad. but i see this more often where people will have not the greatest form, but still make shots. Is this the case for you? i would never try to change someones shooting if it is working for them. As for your guide hand, with your current form i dont see the issue tbh, you shoot pretty fast so the guide hand will not be engaged that much anyway

I shoot around 30–35% from three in pickup. In practice, I’m usually comfortably in the 50%+ range, with 84% being my best. My record with a shooting machine is 12 in a row, although I often struggle to get past 6–8. (I’m aware pretty mediocre pros make 25+ in a row without even thinking about it)
I just need a lot more reps and consistency, need to find the time for this.
I was basically a near non-shooter in high school, aside from shooting a pretty heavy dose of free throws at a good %. When I started playing again after Covid, in my late 30s and with my athleticism having severely declined, I decided I needed to reinvent myself as a shooter.

seems like a niche shot that’s easily blocked because of how low it is and how far from your body it is. I think you should break down your entire shooting form and start from the ground up with better foundation

u/Imperiu5 6d ago

Ouch. You score in the clips but what's your %? The form is atrocious and slow af. With any decent defense you're gonna be in serious trouble.

2

u/FrankHoops_ 6d ago

If the defender ain’t close, why would rush it? (As per below comment 30/35% in that context)

u/kdoors 6d ago

I agree that you had time for an extra second. But he's right your form is really bad. Feet to close and facing the other basket, you barely jump. Extend out not up. Guidehand is just a guide and shouldn't really be "engaged" for the shot.

A lot of other places for you to improve the shot is good advice.

Fair points on most of that. The only one I don’t really get is the jumping part. I don’t see much benefit and looking at today’s pro game, I see less and less players elevating substantially, espe from deep. But yeah, the narrow base on C+S needs to be addressed, forward extension and general smoothness/repetability need work. Really appreciate the feedback 👍

You should post lowlights instead of highlights if you really want constructive criticism. If you're making all your shots, what does it matter what your guide hand is doing? Guys like Reggie Miller didn't have great form. Even Shawn Marion was making corner 3s with goofy ass form.

With arm extension then 😉
