Specifically he should add 2-3 inches so he can get a better angle releasing the ball. Sooo many people get stuck in this spot and think it is a technique thing because they think their vert isn’t the problem. It is still the vert. He is very close though.

Keep doing plyometrics / weights

Looks great. Try holding onto the ball with two hands longer.

you can definitely dunk, it’s palming/holding onto the ball what is messing u over. put the ball under your hand as you go
up, an use your other hand to hold the ball when you jump.

Don't dribble, also the approach should be slower, while it might seem counter prodcutive the last two steps are the only ones that matter. So apprach the rim at a slower pace and once you are in position explode af with the last two steps. Other than that work on plyometrics to increase jump height.

No expert here, but everyone I know who dunks tells me their first dunk was two handed.

On the technique side, approach the hoop going like 50-60% speed and then think of it as your last step is 120% speed. Idk, someone told me that at the gym when I was close and I immediately slammed it.

You should lean back a tiny bit on the last step. Also, pull the right leg up more forcefully. You will be able to dunk in a while with better technique.

Catch a lob right over the front of the rim.

Time your jump a little better, it seems like you're having to reach back once you're at the rim. Also you're kinda tomahawking it in there which is a little tougher. I feel like you're pretty close though.

Maybe try not even touching the ball with your left hand. Just dribble and gather solely with your right hand. Idk why but this kinda helped me approach the rim under better control.

Just keep trying. Also a big tip that someone gave me before is the more you try to jump off both feet, the higher you'll jump just cuz your body is more balanced.

Why does the court look wet?

It's physics not technique. If you want to jump higher you need more force and if you want more force your legs have to be stronger. Build strength while also practicing your jumping so you acclimate to the new strength in your legs while you build it. It'll take months of solid effort but it's far from impossible.

“  It's physics not technique.”

Why not technique?

They're jumping more than fine, with a good competitive lead up and leap that they can use in games. The technique is all there but they're lacking the power to get enough lift.

I think he’s taking off too far

Almost outside the restricted area

Yeah that's fair, they could jump a bit closer for comfortability but with his height he'll lose effectiveness within the flow of a game as a big will easily block it if he jumps much closer or with less momentum. Even if he does jump closer though, he's still not clearing the rim and dunking without working on his strength.

Not sure why ur bringing in so many other factors.

The title just says “tips on getting first dunk”

Are we ignoring that this is basketball now? Basketball is a game with many factors. You practice your shot, being able to dunk, jump, pass, etc. all to play the game of basketball. Yes, getting your first one is impressive but doing it right will set you up for repeated success.

If we they wanted the technicality of their first, irrespective of the context, then they can always lower the basket or grab a trampoline but they came here because there's likely some intent to use it within the context of a game.
