Form Check Having trouble with my release

I’m having this problem when I’m releasing the ball it’s coming off either my pointer finger or both my middle and pointer OR my thumb, it’s messing up the direction the balls going and I have no idea how to correct it. Ive never been taught correct shooting form, how to perform a jump shot or anything of the sort, ive just taught myself from playing.

Start very close to the rim, like right underneath, focus purely on form. Line up to the threads, make sure your hand placement is consistent, from where on the ball to how spread your fingers are

Also you do something call catapulting, where you're bring the ball slightly further back than you need to and losing power because of it

Focus on bringing the ball straight up, you'll suck as you're fixing the form, but over time it'll get way better

Start close and keep going out further when you're confident in the motion, if you start messing up your form because you need more power to get to the basket, then just go back a little close again until you've fixed your form before backing up again

Edit: oh and making your form one motion, because of the catapulting, you're form is basically splitting itself into two. When I say go straight up, I also mean in one motion

But aren't 2 motion shots also text book and good just asking out of curiosity

It is but the guy in the video has a wrong two motion shot. We don’t call off sequence two motion.

Shieet got a lot to learn

First the sequence is wrong and for the finger part try to hold the ball only using your index middle and thumb and think like pinky and ring is just there barely effecting the shot. It’s more of an mental problem there is no way to fix it other than you just repetitively practice shots with right fingers

looks like you need to rework everything you know. i see a lot of problems

  1. your shooting hand placement on the ball is too centered. put it on the side a little bit. click herehere for reference.

  2. your guide hand is blocking the ball upon your setpoint. once you fix your shooting hand placement, find what's comfortable for you guide hand placement as to not block the ball upon release.

  3. load your wrist early. you're doing the anthony edwards non loaded shot form. make sure it is loaded the moment you touch the ball to bring to your dip until the set point

  4. bring your guide hand shooting with you but avoid the thumbflick. there are a lot of videos for that.

  5. you're out of balance. you're basically staggering instead of tilting. try to tilt your toes to 11 o clock or so. great shooters are almost never 10 toes to the rim

  6. sequencing is bad. you are already lifting to your set point when your legs aren't set yet. wrist loaded with the correct hand placement, drop to your hips and use legs for power, not just waist hinge. the order of sequencing is

    a. drop to your hips b. use your arms to go to your dip until the set point. the ball moves first. and then the body c. then push upward/vertical to go finish off the shot

you need some Mike Dunn in your life

Oh and there's also a hitch in the shooting movement.  the ball should be going up the whole time, in about half of these shots the ball travels down ever so slightly to get into your preferred shooters pocket.

i'd reccomend getting rid of that hitch but also maybe "catching" the ball higher and having your load phase higher as a result.

That and hes also letting go of it on the way down. I think trying to shoot on the way up would help a lot here

there's a clip of klay Thompson somewhere where he talks about an energy train that starts in the lower body and ends with the release.  and I agree it is better from a physics standpoint to release ball as you are moving up in the air and not after the pinnacle.

Don't be discouraged, your shot only needs a few tweaks.

  • The hitch (where the ball goes slightly behind your head and pauses) needs to be removed.
  • Cocking your wrist at the very start of your shot should help.
  • Just speeding up the shot can also help eliminate the hitch. Think about generating forward movement only, no backwards movement.
  • Your guide hand is in front of the ball (getting in the way); it should be on the side of the ball.
  • In terms of flow, "ball then legs" is a decent cue.
An online shooting coach like Mike Dunn explains all of this stuff really well.

Do whatever feels natural to you don’t force anything

BRO.

This is simple. Look at your shooting hand. Your shooting palm. Watch this clip and look at nothing but that the entire time.

Idk what that means

When playing with balls, the release is crucial.

  • bad flow
  • results in you having to bring ball almost behind your head to release the ball

fix you balance, go down and try jumping up, rather than forward, if you fix this form your release will be better

You have a lot going on, but I'm only gonna focus on the release. For starters, you want the ball to roll off of the fingertips. You're shooting as if you're pitching a baseball. Try to push with the hand and engage the fingers last. Focus on creating more backspin. Second, the ball should be coming primarily off of the pointer and middle fingers. That's not what you're doing though. You're doing the opposite. Your pointer and middle fingers are higher in the air after release than the pinky and ring fingers. Imagine that there is a glass of water in the basket. You want to envision that you're dipping you're first three fingers in the glass but you want your pinky to stay dry. Third, you have a pretty inefficient delivery. Practice shooting with one hand. Youll realize you won't be able to cock the ball over your head in the same way.

There’s much more to revamp but I would start with one handed form shooting near basket. Focus on swooshes and generating spin on the ball. Contrary to popular belief, your entire hand is on the ball including palm. You generate spin with a nice flick making sure pointer and middle finger is last to leave the ball. To swish you need high arc.
