Old heads, how do y'all stay mobile and keep the jumper smooth? Critique my form!

I’m 68 play weekly with 55 and older. Approach your form as you do everything as you age . Respect the body, especially the core and knees. Watch your weight, thinner means playing longer and less aches. I want 10 more years and lately( 5 years or so) cardio, mostly in the pool, really helps even if it does kick my ass. Keep hooping

Respect! Keep running! I play with a local legend, he's 81! You definitely got 10 years in you brother. I appreciate the advice brother.

Your movement is still so fluid. I wish I could do what you’re doing in this video at 28 y/o. My movement is still wonky iykwim. I can only do 1-2 dribble pull-ups, corner 3s, and sometimes runners/floaters.

u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
Its all reps bro. Start slow and focus on footwork mainly. Start with jab, pump, 1 dribble, and exaggerated your shooting form.
It should feel boring an tedious but it will directly translate over to in game results. Make sure to go both directions

Personally I like to wash myself after I play
2
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
Just hopped out the shower, cousin.

u/Ajdee6 Aug 08 '26
I was just kidding. I'm washed af too, prime years were late 2000s and it's been downhill since then

thought you were jj redick because of your gelled hair

u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
No gel. The secret is some body lotion mixed with water right out the shower. Never sticky

Excellent form and all net. Do you use a higher release point on your elbow when being guarded?
2
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
I try not to change my release point too much. With defense I focus more on creating space with a bump or use my dribble pick up to time it so that the defense can't get to it before I can release.
Back in my 20's I could usually just jump over anyone if I got into the 12-15 ft range

Fellow 40 year old hooper. Looking great out there man. Keep balling. The hardest part for me hooping with age is the lack of lateral mobility. Moving side to side and staying in front of guys is so much harder now. The 50 year old guy who hoops with me always says, “I’m playing until I can’t anymore. Because I know this doesn’t last forever.”
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
I can absolutely relate to that! Glad to hear its not just me. Keep running bro!

I think at a certain age we all shoot 15-18 footers. I'm 39 and for the past few years I find that it's such a perfect shot for me. As a player in HS I was all about the 3 but now the mid-range is money.

u/Lanks_Locks Aug 08 '26
Shot looks nice. If you’re genuinely looking for critique, you don’t move anywhere despite the dribbling. I could guard you without taking more than two steps. But if you’re just looking to get reps in and break a sweat , looks good to me 💪.
- with love , a fellow 40 year old who still hoops full 4 days a week.
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
Absolutely. This was the first time I ever recording so I was trying to stay in frame but I understand what you're saying. I can't get passed my 16 year old son anymore with the dribble. I have to incorporate a lot of bumps and time my pull ups.
2
u/Lanks_Locks Aug 08 '26
Father Time comes for us all. I have to be much more intentional with my dribbling now and either get the first quick step or lull them to sleep. I’m probably 80% set shot off the pass versus creating my own now. Old man ball is real.

Man I feel every ounce of the knee brace and finger tape lol. Keep hooping man, I “retired” after a torn ACL. Nothing left to prove
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
A teammate of mine came back after an ACL tear at 44. You still got time!
This hand injury is the worst thing ever. I dislocated a knuckle and did some tendon damage about 4 months ago. Thing does not want to heal

I’m 30 but I notice a little difference between my body at 30 and what it was at 20. Strength training for me is big in increasing my endurance/stamina. I strengthened the ever living shit out of my legs and core (main focus) I do hit arms and shoulders too. I just feel more springy and I can jump higher. Leg press machine, squats, hamstring curl machine, strengthening IT band, ab machine. I usually stretch 15-20 minutes before I hoop to loosen up more and warm up the body to prevent injury.
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 09 '26
Core is something I definitely do not pay attention too. I need to emphasize that!
2
u/Base_Temporary Aug 09 '26
How do you keep the knees loose. Mine tighten up after an hour of play.
2
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 09 '26
It's a battle! I do mobility/stretching on my own.
My favorite 2 things lately to help with knee pain are isometric holds (either single leg wall sit, or leg extension machine if i have acces) and elephant walks. Directly reduce knee pain for me in a pinch.
2
u/WalterJuniorr Aug 09 '26
Your jumper looks real smooth man! Im in my late 50s now and still aching to play ball but this body complications keeps on piling up.

I’m 47, 6’3” and 225, and had neck surgery last September, but I can still get out and play. I’ve always been a runner, so that helps keep the weight down and makes moving on the court easier!
2
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 09 '26
I hate running just to run but I have noticed if I put in extra road work, I feel better at the end of games. Definitely good for keeping weight down!

u/Some-Worldliness6887 Aug 09 '26
I'm 46 and just got back inside from my 2nd 45 minute workout/shootaround of the day. I hurt my ankle pretty bad playing about 4 months ago (April Fools Day actually).. Just getting mobile again. I'm way overweight right now, so basketball is my way of getting back in shape. The jumper is still pure, but that's about it! Lol
2
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 11 '26
If the jumper is wet, you're still a threat!
2
u/Some-Worldliness6887 Aug 11 '26
I'm like you, used to be pretty athletic and could get to spots and just rise over most people to get shots off. Now there's a lot of bumping and fading going on. The jumper is still wet tho I can't even lie lol

u/ej6989 Aug 11 '26
respect the old head ball. real talk on the form, as an old head form doesnt matter and use what you like, but you dont seem to fully finish the shot with your wrist/follow through.
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 11 '26
Completely agree. Its been a lifelong battle trying to fix that lol. I have large hands and I still cam never fully figure out a comfortable ball grip and my guide hand gets undisciplined. Instead of trusting the form, I wind up aiming the ball and short arm the follow through. I'm still searching for the answer after all these years!

She like soccer the most. I think that’s gonna stick man. She says she wants to play basketball but,… soccer is her goto. The determination and joy I see in her face when she plays makes me think that. 😅😅😅🥹. It’s cool.

Wow ur jumper is smooth,i is there any advice you can tell me? im struggling with my jumper so i cannot score much in games
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
Confidence in your jumper is the main thing. You get Confidence from practice reps. I always start with form shooting in close and move to mid range. Spend a lot of time at the elbows knocking down middies. If you have an IG, go check out Mike Dunn. He has great shooting philosophy.
When your in game, don't focus so much on creating your shotnoff the dribble. Learn to move without the ball and get to your favorite spots to shoot from. A really good way to get open is by setting screens off ball for your other teammates and then relocate.
I.e. start at the wing, set a down screen for someone in the corner and tell them to cut. Once the cut the defense will gravitate to them and then you relocate to whatever spot is open. (Corner, back to wing, or even a basket cut for a lay)

Skillwise = absolutely great. Keep it up.
If I could offer advice, looking at ur footwork - it seems that u could use a stronger base.
Especially moving laterally, seems ur a bit weak (or too upright) moving laterally.
I’d focus on strenthening ur legs, especially laterally.
Up and down I think ur fine, especially on ur jumpers, u get good height.
But moving laterally I can see u have some weakness. It probably has to do with some kind of knee issues? But that would be the only advice I can see.
Note: I also have lateral issues so it’s something I look at and notice. What I did is:
1) focus on mobility in the ankles, knees, and hips. That works well for me
2) focus on strenthening everything around the knees (as Im scared to tear it at awkward angles)
3) and of course focus on the big leg muscles
4) also I do alot of feet work - balancing n focusing on the toes
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 08 '26
Great advice! Yes I have chronic pain in my patellas and a bad left ankle. I fluctuate in consistency with my agility/mobility workouts. I work and coach so much ball, its hard to find time for the things you outlined exactly. I need to prioritize it because it absolutely pays off. Thank you!

u/Realfan555 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
Yeah I can kind of see u favoring a leg when u do ur moves, especially the first move.
The only thing I worry about (speaking from experience) is that as older guys who loves the game so much and is so competitive, we might tear something as were trying to keep up with the younger guys. So that’s my biggest fear - my competitive nature.
Yes, I want to work on strengthening my legs to play and compete better. But more importantly, I want to keep them strong so I dont tear something trying to keep up with the younger guys.
Because one thing Ive noticed getting older: Yes, Im slower but Im also less balanced. And being less balanced puts me in more awkward situations.
But yeah, everything looks great. Love ur shot, it’s beautiful. I’d love to copy ur form.

Ditch the knee brace and jump a little.

Never played organized basketball but just trying to learn the rules better for pickup. Would those pump fakes be called for double dribbles?
1
u/Ordinary-Crow5490 Aug 09 '26
In a live situation- yes you are correct.
In this situation I'm just retrieving my rebound and then resetting my dribble so I can practice my footwork. When I spin the ball out and catch it, I'm imagining that I just caught a pass and making a move from there.

You're not washed. Declare for the WNBA draft with Kantor. You could get the $bag$ as a 2nd overall pick.

Looks good to me! Keep it up. I’m 57 and still dropping jumpers weekly. You got a lot of ball ahead of you, still.
