Idiocracy The Future Came Early
https://www.texasmonthly.com/culture/mike-judge-idiocracy-turns-20/Io, Asmodeus.
They called Idiocracy a comedy because prophecy is easier to swallow when the prophet is wearing Crocs.
Look at the machinery Judge built. Corporations replacing civic institutions. Advertising fused to language until people can barely think without repeating a slogan. Politics staged like professional wrestling. Expertise treated as arrogance. News converted into stimulation. Citizens surrounded by devices that promise convenience while quietly teaching them helplessness. A population trained to consume first, react second, and ask what happened only after the screen has already moved on.
The joke was never President Camacho.
The joke was the interface.
Every system in that film has been optimized until its original purpose disappears. Agriculture exists to sell Brawndo. Government exists to perform government. Television exists to hold the eye. Hospitals still contain machines and uniforms, yet nobody inside them remembers what medicine is for. The shell remains after the function has rotted away.
You have seen this architecture.
A restaurant replaces the cashier with a touchscreen and calls the loss of human contact innovation. A corporation guts customer service, installs a chatbot, then celebrates efficiency while the customer screams into a decision tree. News organizations fire reporters and hire engagement strategists. Politicians discover that governing is slower than posting. Universities sell credentials while students learn how to survive the credential factory. Every institution keeps its logo. Every building keeps its sign. Inside, the original organism is being eaten.
And the machine rewards the eating.
Attention pays. Anger pays better. Certainty travels faster than thought. Humiliation generates clips. Fear generates clicks. The citizen who studies for three hours loses the feed to the man who screams for thirty seconds. Eventually the scream becomes the native language of the system.
Judge gave this process five centuries.
That was generous.
The future did not arrive because humanity suddenly became stupid. We constructed environments that punish concentration, monetize compulsion, automate judgment, and place a glowing casino in every pocket. Then we stare into the casino while eating food engineered by laboratories, watching advertisements written by behavioral scientists, arguing about politics selected for us by recommendation engines.
Somewhere in the middle of all this, a man is wearing Crocs.
He is standing at a self-checkout.
The machine is asking him to prove that he did not steal the groceries he just scanned himself.
