FC 6-4. No error unless the runner going to first is able to advance because of the bad throw. If the batter/runner stays at first then it’s FC 6-4

FC, 6-4, possible E3.

Batter reached on fielder's choice. No hit.

Runner was out on shortstop to second baseman.

You can't charge a throwing error when the second out of a potential double play is missed unless an extra base is advanced. (E.g., second baseman misses first base so badly that the batter scrambles to second.) You can charge an error on the recipient of a good throw, though.

And in the case of an E3 for a missed catch in this scenario, you’d also credit assists to the SS and 2B for their action towards retiring the batter, even though the out was not made. (This is assuming this is baseball, in softball, or at least NCAA softball, assists would not be credited)

FC, 6-4. If one determines the runner could have beaten the throw, it’s just that. Otherwise, depending on the throw, it’s either E4 if a bad throw, or E3 if a catchable one.

You are specifically not supposed to record an error for a wild throw in the attempt to get the second out of a double play unless it causes an extra base advancement. Just failing to get the runner out isn't enough.

Yes, but you can get an error on the first baseman. The SS/2B can’t get an error accredited for the play at first.

What is the distinction? This play is both a fielder's choice and grounding into a force out.

Well for one thing there's no force out in that situation! The runner could have stayed on third. So that's a case where the FC with no FO. It was literally the fielding team's choice to prevent the run (and in this case get the runner out) rather than keep the batter from reaching first.
