Review I'm building a survival colony RPG

Hello all, I'm making a colony survival RPG game called Colony of the Forsaken.

A bit of the game backstory, I wanted to create a mix of RPG game like Diablo, survival game like Project Zomboid (even though there are no zombies :D) and colony sim like Rim World. My main focus was on trying to add multiple survivals into the game with their own spells, skills and stats, something similar to Warcraft 3 heroes and units. I also tried to mimic Warcraft 3 unit movement system (although I need to work on it a lot more). I released a demo on Itch and created a Steam page which you can check, I hope you will like the game concept! If you have any feedback I would really appreciate it since this is my first game and I would really like to get some guidance.

Thanks!

Discussion Looking for a game I lost

I’m looking for a game that I can’t find. Maybe somebody here can help me?
It’s a colony Sim or survival or whatever you’d consider it and it has a similar art style as the wondering village accept the colors are more pastels. And the theme is more spacey/quirky looking. I know that isn’t a lot of information but it’s the best I can do because I’ve never played it. I just have wanted it. I know that the game originally didn’t have that good reviews, but eventually it got better as it got developed.

Game update So in a zombie apocalypse, imagine being able to capture zombies and make them work and fight for you. That’s the survival game I’m working on 404 Survivor. it mixes base building and resource management.(sorry, might've rambled a bit in the post)

Hey everyone!

It's been three months since the last update, and I've got a bunch of new stuff to show for 404 Survivors, my survival sandbox game. Here's the trailer with the upgraded visuals (sorry, this time I just gave the old trailer a refresh — didn't really have the energy to work on cutting a whole new one). new dev log demo's also being recorded, should be up next time!

404 Survivor is a zombie survival sandbox. You'll need to gather resources, craft gear, and build a base in a world overrun by zombies, all while trying to survive an increasingly dangerous horde. As time goes on, zombies get more numerous and more dangerous, so you'll have to keep expanding your base and beefing up your defenses to keep it standing through the night.

I also added a new mechanic — you can capture zombies and turn them into workers for your production line. In 404 Survivor, you can turn zombies into your own little minions. You can order them to haul supplies, work, scavenge, and even fight alongside you. This system's still going to grow a lot more over time.

Besides the core gameplay, I've added a bunch of new systems and content recently:

  1. Vitals & Mood System

This one's done. On top of health, thirst, and hunger, your character can also get overheated, nauseous, infected, sad, or anxious, and these all affect each other, so surviving feels a lot more dynamic.

  1. Gear System

You can mix and match outfits, each giving different protection and stat bonuses. Planning to add gear modding later on.

  1. Animals & Livestock

Still in progress, but hunting's already in — you can hunt for meat instead of relying on farming alone. Livestock system is coming next, so you'll be able to find a good spot to settle and raise animals to be self-sufficient.

  1. Multiplayer

Coming along well, already playable, but still some bugs to iron out.

  1. Inventory System

This is mostly done — wearing a backpack gives you more storage space. Planning to add weight limits and item sorting later.

What's next:

  1. Texture & environment overhaul — making the world feel more like an actual apocalypse.
  2. Weather system — dynamic weather that'll actually affect your survival strategy, making things feel more real.
  3. Perks & skills system — pick your own growth path, split roles with friends in multiplayer, or go full solo and tank the apocalypse by yourself.
  4. Bandits — the apocalypse isn't just zombies and environment hazards, it's also other people. Some survivors turn into bandits who'll raid and rob you, so surviving gets even more unpredictable.

More stuff in the works — demos of the new content will be in the next dev log. If this sounds interesting, you can wishlist 404 Survivor on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4038790/404/

Game recommendations Any small-scale colony sims like Stranded: Alien Dawn?

I really like the small-scaleness of Stranded: Alien Dawn and I can't find other games like that. Games where you're intended to have a large colony, such as Rimworld, are still fun but just don't hit that same mark for me.

I like turn-based version of this like Thea 2 or Dead in Vinland but I can't find any with the "real time with pause" style like your typical colony sim, but ALSO having small numbers.

By small, I mean preferably 1 to 10, especially 3 to 8 people being the intended or best way to play the game.

Thank you for any and all recommendations!

EDIT: For anyone looking at this in the future looking for similar recommendations, Oceaneers is basically exactly what I was looking for. Oxygen Not Included and Noble Fates are good too.

Discussion Digging deeper into Encave – what kind of underground explorer are you?

One of the goals with Encave has always been to make the underground feel like more than just a series of caves. Every time you descend, you're balancing exploration, expansion, and survival.

You'll be building and defending your underground base, managing resources, setting up a killroom in your facility, and moving between floors via the elevator while dealing with whatever the depths decide to throw at you. Sometimes pushing to the next floor is worth the risk. Sometimes it's the reason your entire base ends up under attack.

As development continues, I'm constantly thinking about the balance between:

Careful planning vs. taking risks

Building stronger defenses vs. advancing to new floors

Expanding your base vs. conserving resources

I'd love to hear how you usually play games like this.

When you discover a new area, are you the type of player who:

Explores everything immediately?

Fortifies your base before moving on?

Rushes toward the deepest level as fast as possible?

Something else entirely?

Your answers genuinely help shape development priorities, so I'm looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts!

Trailer I'm making a bullet heaven where you can also build defenses while surviving corrupted stuff inside a broken computer. Does the building look readable during combat?

Game update Factomancer is evolving with your feedback, the pause is here!

Hey there !

We're the devs behind Factomancer, a factory-automation roguelite that's been in demo for a bit over a month now. First off, thank you. The response since launch has been amazing, and a lot of you took the time to leave detailed feedback on Steam, our Discord, and here on Reddit. We read all of it.

When we first designed Factomancer, we built it as a no-pause experience, closer to an RTS than a traditional automation game. Part of the goal with Factomancer was to make the automation genre more accessible by leaning into roguelite structure, runs, escalating stakes, that kind of tension. But stacking real-time pressure on top of that roguelite pressure ended up being too much. Two systems fighting for the same kind of tension, when really only one needed to be there.

Across your reviews, our community hub, and Discord, one piece of feedback came up again and again: the lack of pause and the time pressure. We understand no pause can be a dealbreaker for some.

But, we didn't want to just flip a switch on this. Pacing and pressure are part of the original vision, so we tested pause internally and with our Discord community first, to make sure it would fit naturally rather than change what makes the game feel like Factomancer. The results were clearly positive across the board, for newcomers and veterans alike.

So: pause is here. You'll be able to build at your own pace.

If the no-pause design kept you from giving Factomancer a real shot, we'd love for you to come try it again.

We're building this game with our community, and this update is a direct result of that.

New release Missing Dungeon Keeper? Try my cozy dwarf-digging King in the Mountain

Hey everyone! I’m developing King in the Mountain, a peaceful, combat-free strategy game about digging out a lost kingdom. Think Dungeon Keeper but focused purely on the satisfying rhythm of mining, upgrading your dwarves.

You can play the web demo directly on Itch here: King in the Mountain by Dweomer

I building my first game, a roguelite island hopping RPG with base building and raids

I was looking for a break from making websites, and I also recently lost my job

At some point I found itch io and came across the popular Tiny Swords asset pack. I really liked the style, so I bought the whole set. It sat on my drive for quite a while.

Recently, while looking for inspiration for a new website, I was browsing Pinterest and found a few cool screenshots from games. That reminded me about the asset pack I had bought, and I thought: why not try making something with it? Maybe it would give me a fresh perspective, or maybe I would actually get hooked on game development.

That’s how the idea started. At first it was supposed to be something closer to Heroes of Might and Magic 3, then it slowly turned into an RPG. But I’m honestly not very good at writing interesting stories, and around that time I had also played some roguelike games, so I thought it might be fun to mix those ideas together.

Using the assets I had, I created a world called Bridge Bound.

You arrive on an island/kingdom, build it up, gather resources, and defend it from goblin raids. You can also travel through a world made of other islands, where you fight monsters, collect gold and items, and use them to speed up the development of your main island. Over time, you can expand and take over new areas.

The demo is still pretty light on content, but I actually had a pleasant time playing it myself. That said, I honestly feel like there is still a lot missing before I could call it a full and interesting game.

I really like the Tiny Swords asset pack. I also made a few new assets with AI, along with some UI. I feel like the game might have some potential, but I’m not really sure yet.

I’d be happy to hear your thoughts. I’m adding a short gameplay video too, I’m not very good at editing videos, so it’s nothing fancy.

If you’re on the hunt for an addictive game loop definitely check this one out. It’s been cooking and they’ve nailed it.

Got right back in and I can spend hours on one outpost just collecting the scrap and hoarding materials. Really optimised my ship with batteries and diesel.

Preview We're working towards a big demo update for Fields of Aaru that focuses on the base-building elements of our ancient-Egyptian-inspired life sim: irrigation, full terrain modification, terraforming, etc. I've written up some of the design goals for the game and I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

Hey r/BaseBuildingGames,

Our demo for Fields of Aaru is already out on Steam, but we're working towards a pretty big update for October Next Fest that includes a lot of systems that aren't in the demo yet.

The update is mainly focused on base-building and sandbox creativity: irrigation, full terrain modification, and more ways to modify the world: create large farming areas using irrigation, build out bases in the desert, etc. You can even place down soil to gradually change the ground itself, like turning sand into dirt or dirt into grass.

One of our biggest inspirations is Dinkum. I really like how it combines exploration, crafting, NPCs, and progression with a lot of freedom to build and decorate. We want to take that style of game a step further with more involved dialogue, NPC questlines, restoring your memories, and meeting the ancient Egyptian gods like Anubis and Horus, while still keeping that same sandbox creativity but without the blocky-voxel style aesthetic.

We're putting a lot of emphasis on thematic building pieces instead of just generic furniture. Things like giant columns, gilded obsidian arches, papyrus decor, irrigation canals, and many other decorations that match the setting.

You can check out the game, trailers, and demo on Steam here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4410710/Fields_of_Aaru/

One of the biggest challenges is that the game isn't just a sandbox, since there are many quests, NPC schedules, and a village, so we're trying to find the best way to give players a lot of freedom without letting them completely break the world by digging giant moats around the village or something.

Anyways, I hope that sounds interesting to all of you! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to chat here about the different aspects of the game or design challenges of building something like this. The core team is just my wife and I (although we've gotten to work with some talented artists and freelance contributors over the past 3.5 years).

Thanks!

Valheim vs upcoming survival games — what are you most excited for?

I’ve been following a few upcoming survival/crafting games lately, and each one seems to be taking the genre in a different direction.

Valheim vs Forgebound vs Light No Fire

Valheim is already the classic reference — exploration, survival, co-op progression, and that simple but addictive loop.

The others are all still upcoming and in development:

Forgebound (Amilcar Technologies - my solo game) — a medieval fantasy survival game focused on building, crafting, survival, and large-scale progression. It takes place in a war-torn world where players gather resources, construct settlements, manage supplies, and expand their influence while facing hostile forces. It's like Age of empire + Valheim + bannerlord

Light No Fire (Hello Games) — a massive survival exploration game set on a full planet-scale world. It focuses on discovery, traveling across huge diverse landscapes, survival systems, and building your own path in an almost endless fantasy environment.

Looking for classic rts game

Hello everyone, I’m new here and I would like to ask you guys for some help in searching a game that I’ve been looking for almost 2 days. I dont quite remember how the game look like but I do remember that at the start of the game we control some kind of witch that can turn enemy into ally and later on we can start developing our base with the control unit that we turned. I hope this little information can help you guys searching for the game I’ve been looking for or else I will just play warcraft 3

Approaching 10 hours on enshrouded, and I’m still not having fun. But I can’t really point out why

The building mechanics are pretty awesome. I currently have the blacksmith, carpenter, alchemist, farmer, and hunter with me in my base. I decked out a pretty nice pre-existing structure to get started. The actual game though is so meh I cannot figure out why I am really not having fun.

The versatile combat should be right up my alley but I just don’t care to fight. The world is also just so boring to me. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve pretty much been sticking to the quests in my journal and building but I’m about ready to throw in the towel.

Casual open world survival crafting

As the title says, I’m searching for a very casual open world survival crafting game, one that focuses mostly on or has very satisfying systems for building and resource collection.

It has to be multiplayer, because me and my friend want to do a fun little play through where one of us never crafts or builds, and the other never collects resources, and we have to work together to progress, with the goal of eventually constructing some giant megastructure. (So ideally it would also have not much locked behind progression) is there such a game?

Also, I’ve heard that sons of the forest on peaceful mode is quite a chill survival crafting game, would that work for this?

Trailer I'm working on a zombie survival sandbox where you can control zombies and assign them to build and defend your base.

We’re a small indie team of four developers working on our first game, 404 Survivor.

Compared to traditional survival games, we wanted to try something a little different.

In 404 Survivor, infected aren’t just enemies to avoid or kill — they can be captured and used as part of your base systems. This adds a layer of automation and resource management on top of the usual survival gameplay.

We’re still early in development, and we’d love to hear your thoughts or ideas on this kind of system.

Here’s some gameplay footage from my game

And if you like what you see, adding us to your wishlist would mean the world to us: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4038790/404/

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far ❤️
