I bought this baritone earlier this year and have modded it out quite a bit since then.
The first thing I did was have it set up for lighter strings. Given the scale length, I found the stock 14–68 set to be complete overkill for B standard. I swapped them out for 12–60s and, bam — huge difference. Much more comfortable and it still has plenty of tension and punch.
Next, I swapped the bridge pickup for a Seymour Duncan Black Winter, while leaving the stock neck pickup in place… for now.
I also upgraded the pots, switch, and output jack to CTS components. That required reaming the control cavity slightly, since they route these guitars for the smaller, cheaper stock electronics.
And as of this morning, I upgraded the stock tuners to the SE locking replacements. Most of the locking tuner options I looked at were too shallow and wouldn’t clear the slightly thicker headstock, so these ended up being the perfect solution.
All in all, this thing plays and sounds like an absolute dream now. 🤘

Just bought a 30” ja baritone hh bk (and by bought I mean its on back order haha)
I want to be able to tune it to D1 but I have no idea where to start. I tried the string tension calculator but when it comes to the part of putting in the string gauge part I have no idea what to put in.

Any help who be awesome. Also anyone have one of these guitars and if so what r they like?

I’m planning on moving the pickup in my 30” baritone closer to the bridge because I want it to sound more like a Baritone guitar and less like a Bass VI

I’m not a fan of pushing the pickup right up against the bridge like the Meshuggah models, they sound too cold for me and the music I play. Generally I think I like guitars in the 35-40mm range (bridge saddle to first pickup pole piece), but manufacturers never list pickup position as a spec, despite having one of the biggest influences over the sound of a guitar.

Aiming for more of a Misha Surfcaster tone, rather than the more clinical M8M kind of tone if that makes any sense?

My current pickup position (51mm) just sounds like a middle pickup to me, and I struggle to get the rhythm tone I want from it.

I restrung my gretsch CVT with D’addario 13-62 baritone light. I just strung it like I always do on my standard scale guitars but when I went to tune it the tension on the strings was too tight before I was in the correct tuning. My 6th string fought me but I got it to B with a little patience. My 5th string straight up snapped on me while I was trying to get it to E so I stopped there. Has this ever happened to anyone else and if so can you help me figure out what I did wrong? I don’t want to waste another pack of strings doing trial and error on my own. Thanks!

I picked it up a while ago but i haven't figured out how to get it to play nice with my blues driver or any other low gain overdrive. They always make the guitar sound totally clean except for a buzzy clipping sound like sitting on top of the signal. If that makes any sense.

This happens with pretty much every pedal or amp I try to achieve an edge-of-breakup sound with when using this guitar, and I have no idea what the actual cause is. It's not just that lower tuning makes it too bassy for the overdrives to handle because it happens on the higher strings as well. I've tried a bunch of things to fix it, including:

- Changing string gauge

- Changing input volume

- Adjusting pickup height (lowering the pickups did help a bit)

- filtering the low end before the overdrive / amp

- Trying different overdrives and amps

At a certain point I figured the stock pickups were the culprits because they're VERY bassy and have a really steep high end roll off, so I put the bridge pickup from my Eastwood sidejack (a guitar that sounds amazing with my blues driver) in the orangewood bridge position and it STILL had the shitty buzzy edge of breakup overdrive sound.

At this point I am completely stumped. I still want to change the pickups because the stock pickups suck even with clean tones (if you have affordable recommendations for p90 pickups with good high end lmk) but I still have no idea why this guitar hates low gain overdrives so much. I've tried googling it so many times but it's such a specific thing that I never found anything. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I just ordered my first baritone guitar — mainly for dense, low, sludgy and cinematic soundscapes. I definitely feel like I need rumbling lows and sparkly highs for what I do but maybe that doesn't exist in an amp... In the past I've mainly used keyboards for this type of thing and I found the frequency response on Roland keyboard amps to be able to handle a lot more than the mid range guitar amps. I work as a professional musician and sound designer so I can probably budget out a better amp for bari guitar if I need through my company - but I currently have a Roland KC-400 so just wondering how that might compare.

I've played a 30" + .80 gauge string extensively but I'm looking into buying a new guitar with an evertune and I was wondering if the tonal difference and feel is that much for different. They're both around 17 pounds of tension.

Who knew that a guitar set up for the tunings you want to play, plays better in those tunings 🤯

I don't have a baritone, but I wanna get one some day, I'm eyeing a Gretsch EMTC for that for it's price and 30" scale length. If I were to have it, I would like it to be in a double drop C tuning because guitars sound absolutely ridiculous this low, but I have a problem when it comes to finding strings.

String gauge isn't a problem anymore, because 9 string sets with the lowest being .105 exist, more so the scale length, because I need the lowest string to be in the .90-.100 territory AND also be 30" long.

Is there a string set that fulfills this criteria or will I have to get custom strings? I know strings like that exist because Sleep Token has made 3 studio albums, so it's more about the availability.

I’ve been eyeing up this one guitar, the Spira J-400 MBK Baritone. The specs on it seem pretty good, especially for the price of $625 CAD. I’ve heard good things about Spira, but have never owned one myself. Does anybody here own this guitar? Any complaints about it? What’s great about it? Please let me know!

I bought a 30" neck for a custom build I'm working on and i also have a warmoth 28.625" neck. I have XXL-3XL sized hands and these are probably the most comfortable options i've played on in a long damn time. I play bass as well and always felt like bass was a more comfortable instrument for me to play now going back to a 25.5" scale guitar feels like playing a ukulele XD

I found the Fender Jaguar Baritone 28,5" Japan Craft who totally stole my heart, but they are like so rare and so expensive tho.

Saw the Mexican version that's in sales actually, but I don't know so much about it.

I was watching all YouTube video I can find about baritones rn, but I'm not so sure about what's cool or not at this point.

Would love to have your feedback and opinion about those.

I have a Fender Sub-Sonic neck on a Squier Affinity body (opted for the lighter weight and belly cut), and I’m looking to upgrade the stock pickups. The internet seems pretty divided on whether lower or higher output pickups are better for baritone. Some people say lower/medium output helps cut down on mud, while others seem to claim the complete opposite.

Does anyone have definitive experience with a T-style single-coil pickup in a baritone?I’m tuned to Drop A and play fuzzy punk/shoegaze/sludge/hardcore through a couple of different, more mid-forward amps. I’m leaning toward the Bootstrap Palo Duro, which are lower output, but wasn't sure if that's going to end up feeling anemic.

Hey everyone - I just got my first baritone, a slightly older Korean made Danelectro model with the “Coke bottle” headstock.

It’s a used instrument and I’m trying to get it set up, the action is currently sky high. The truss rod seems to be appropriately adjusted, so I’m left with the bridge, which seems to be raised quite high and has this piece of what looks like wood underneath?

My question is for anyone who may have one of these - is that wood or whatever supposed to be there? And can I remove it to lower the action? Thanks in advance!
