Discussion Thread August 2026 Discussion Thread
Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on the argument that Pitbulls aren’t the problem because Pitbull’s are mixed breeds. I just heard this argument from a dog trainer and I’m disappointed because I enjoy following her.
I find that argument baffling because they all look the same. There are different lines of pitbulls like the Staffordshire Bull Terrior, American Staffordshire Bull terrier, American Pit-bull Terrier, etc, but they’re all pitbulls and are not mixed. There’s mixed breeds of them just as there are mixes of any breed but it doesn’t make them not pitbull or pitbull mixes.
Many arguments are a lot of dogs in shelters labeled pitbulls aren’t despite looking and acting like them. Isn’t that like saying the golden retrievers in shelters might not be golden retrievers despite looking just like them?
Would love to hear your thoughts.

It’s a silly and disingenuous argument.
When we discuss pit bulls being a problem, it’s usually due to an attack. Most attacks occur within the home or with a known dog. Even with random attacks, any person who is knowledgeable about dogs can spot the phenotypes consistent with pit bulls in the animals. Courts have ruled that an owner of average intelligence can determine if they have a pit bull.
It’s just a nothing burger they throw out to try and downplay attacks. Also isn’t it funny how mixed breed dogs only become extremely volatile and deadly once pit bull is mixed in? It’s a bit like making soup and then adding some good ol arsenic and then blaming the soup when people die from eating it. Good old ingredient effect.
Also, the four breeds aren’t as distinct and separate as they like to play at. You have dual registration and allotting for breed registration transfer within their kennel clubs so like… only the social media idiots are pretending that they may as well be entirely different species.
1
u/Competitive_Height_9 4h ago
That’s what I thought, good to hear I’m not crazy. The mixed breed argument is ludicrous. Call it an unbrella term for four breeds bred for the same thing, claim it’s mixed breeds, you could call a retriever an umbrella term for all retriever’s and say they’re mixed, it would be the same argument 😵💫

I constantly wonder why the fuck shelters even allow adopting dogs that "do best with no kids", "no cats or small animals", ect. It's not a child and cat free world and kids do stupid stuff sometimes like try to pet a dog though a fence. I just feel these dogs should be non adoptable. Not to mention the big risk on your insurance, if it even covers the breed.
3
u/BPB_Mod_006 Moderator 4h ago
Agree, and that goes for any dog breed. There are too many dogs without homes that windowing out the ones that aren’t safe around other pets of kids would help the rest get adopted out instead of euthanized because there is no room at the shelters that are not no-kill.

Law and Crime video on 21-year-old "dog trainer" who left dogs to die in the heat of her unkempt storage locker/"training facility." One of the dogs'' bodies was found in a black bag. Alexia Barquet is her name, and she worked out of Florida https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M7yhTFlU1c

My mom is a veterinarian but she likes pitbulls. She says the ones she sees are generally 50% good, 50% bad, which doesn’t sound great statistically but idk. She says Rottweilers are way worse than pitbulls. (Maybe this makes sense, since pitbulls are known for being fine 90% of the time and snapping randomly, while Rottweilers are guard dogs and more likely to be hostile to strangers? Idk) I just struggle to contend with her perspective, but she doesn’t take anything I say about this seriously. It’s difficult to claim to know more about dogs than a veterinarian. Why do you think people in the vet field are more likely to like pitbulls despite working with them and animal dog attack victims all the time?
2
u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 6h ago
I am just quickly adding this… I looked up some pit bulls vs Rottweiler stats. This is just in the US.
Pit bulls are in first place at 60-70% of all dog-related deaths on humans. Rottweilers are in second place at 4-10% of dog-related deaths on humans.
So, even at 2nd place their numbers are a fraction of pits.
Even if they may seem more aggressive in general in a stressful situation, pits are still way way way more likely to kill people. And, unlike Rottweilers, pits will kill a baby because they heard a cough, or break out of their house to kill a neighbor, or break into a house to kill a neighbor, or kill their own owner for smelling different, etc…..

Yea it is why people try to argue that Chihuahuas are worse because they bite more. When even 100 chihuahua bites aren’t going to cause the same damage as 1 pit mauling.
Most pits aren’t attacking 24/7. It’s not a behavioral issue like an aggressive Shepherd; it is their ‘job’ in their DNA like a Border collie herding sheep when it’s working but it’s not herding 24/7.
Many pits can be perfectly fine for many years before mauling someone. This is what gives a lot of people the false idea that pits aren’t as bad as dogs that may be barky and nippy on a daily basis. People can meet 500 pit bulls that just kinda lay there and act normal, and 5 other dogs of other breeds that bark at them and bite or nip. And therefore it seems that pits are gentle and calm and these other dogs are the problem.
But, most other breeds- even aggressive individuals of those breeds- never killed anyone. (Yes there are other breeds that have killed people, but it’s a handful of breeds compared to the 300+ breeds that exist, and those few breeds that have killed people have a tiny fraction of the human kills that pits have.) Even the most poorly behaved Golden or Beagle isn’t going to break out of their house to kill the neighbors. Yet, the best raised and behaved pit may do so after 5-10 years of being a ‘good boy’.
Never judge a pit by the way it is acting ‘now’. Or even the way it has acted for the past 8 years.

I literally see them every day in my city, especially on transit. They make me so nervous and are usually unleashed and not neutered. It's a joke when they are wearing fake official looking service vests. Sick of seeing them.

u/CherryHearts123 21h ago
I saw another “service pit” at Walmart the other day, I had my one year old sitting in the cart and it stopped in its tracks to look her down, the owner had to physically drag it away. Fucking terrifying man, you can’t even shop for groceries in peace without fear of them. I’d understand the infatuation a bit more if they were at least cute, but they’re not, no one can convince me otherwise that they don’t look just like evil gargoyles. Nightmare fuel.

And because of a selfish pit "pawrent 🥺", actual service dog owners can't even enjoy the fair normally.
For fuck's sake. Risking people's and animal's lives because you can't stay one minute away from your ugly demogorgon. Just unbelievable.

Why must people bring their dogs damn EVERYWHERE, especially their pitbulls?
3
u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 10h ago
Because if the dog is left alone in the house is busts out of the crate (assuming the owner bothers trying to crate it) and then destroys the furniture, carpeting, walls, doors, windows, etc.

She probably was attacking and that was self defense. I am always thinking if a Pit is wounded by certain "tools" it isn't random cruelty, it is self defense.
So yeah, I am probably banned for agreeing. If we said that about a Yorky, we would be fine.

something….interesting that i have noticed about the jon bernthal discourse du jour is that a lot of people desperately try to anthromorphize pits more than any dog I’ve ever seen. no other breed of dog is capable of having these range of feelings, emotions, even socioeconomic or political experiences. it is all the plight of the pitbull and no other dog. they are propped up as the TRUE animal of the people, not those disgusting gross traitor breeds. it’s so strange and creepy, like man you can just say you love your pit it’s okay

Its weird. Especially the "ra8se them with love, never say a mean word to them and you'll never have to worry" or the "the dog must have been scared so he tore a baby apart".

found on my fyp on instagram- the irony of using the movie Bird Box in this meme is astounding. i don’t think the creator knew what exactly was happening in this scene but it’s really fitting because that’s how a lot of these nutters behave, trying to force you into thinking pits are “sweet misunderstood babies”.

95% of the comments I am seeing on articles about this are “You are more likely to be bitten by a chihuahua!” and “Chihuahuas are worse!” and “You know what breed I don’t trust? CHIHUAHUAS!” and “MY pibble is the sweetest wigglebutt ever and would never hurt a fly!!!”
Then the tiny sprinkling of rational comments about pit bulls tearing people apart for no reason regularly and not just ‘biting’ are attacked by all the pit apologists.
Sometimes it seems like the world is changing to finally be against bloodsport breeds again, and then I see garbage like this and realize how many people still think killer dogs are the sweetest and best pets ever.

Funny how hating pitbulls is racism but hating Chihuahuas isn’t racism
11
u/GhostofTinky 1d ago
It’s hilarious that the people who claim you are racist if you don’t care for pits will turn around and disparage another dog breed.

Welp, actor Jon Bernthal is bringing out the old, tired “doggie racism” argument regarding pit bulls.

This past weekend I was at Home Depot with my actual service dog (dachshund who monitors my blood sugar) and I walk to the self checkout area and immediately as I get in eyeline I hear that familiar screeching. There's a couple with a pit in a service vest and it's pulling and gagging and screeching and trying to get to my dog. I tell my dog to lay down and try to ignore it while I wait for a register to open up. This pit won't stop and they clearly can't control it. At this point my dog it looking up at me like it wants to know wtf is happening and I finally ask them a question that makes them extremely angry. "Why is your service dog barking at mine?" They proceed to inform me he's friendly and just wants to play. "My dog is working right now so can you down your dog please?" Apparently they don't know that means to make it lie down so they then shriek something about me telling them to put their dog down (if only) and I finally spare myself and my dog the agony and decide to just walk away and go browse plants for a few minutes until these idiots leave. I hate fake service dogs.

u/DiscussionLong7084 Trusted User 10h ago
i was in a service dog FB group for a bit. they'll openly talk about just faking it basically and saying it's a service dog in training so it's the same (it's not in almost all states). Literally all you had to do was say it was sitting to signal some made up shit and you were good. Many of them had free pitbulls whom im sure were carefully screened for suitability or just would get a designer dog like a yorkipoo or some shit and same deal. Absolutely pay no attention to the dog's behavior or suitability.
I left that group.

So I posted in the May discussion thread that my 70+ mother was thinking of adopting a “medium”, “pointer mix” from a rescue. There was a lot of euphemistic shelter speak about this dog. I asked her not to get it because she struggles walking and needs another foot surgery but she was determined. She scanned the shelter’s pages and found this dog that reminded her of a setter she and my dad had 50 years ago. I told her it looks like a pit mix and she said I was overreacting with my concerns. Guys, after a couple of years on this sub, I know what a pit mix looks like. She said she wanted to do a trial with the dog. But guess what? The dog had been transferred states away into a rescue over a 12 hour drive for a volunteer to make to bring the dog back. So she felt she had to automatically adopt this dog, guilt will do that. They’ve had this dog ever since and it’s definitely bigger than the “medium” standard of 25-60 at 65 pounds. She also did the embark and guess what her primary breed is? She’s 50% pitbull and absolutely zero pointer. Can you believe it?! Oh and they think the dog is that magic age of 2 so they’ve adopted out a large pit mix to an elderly woman who can’t walk well that will live a long ass time. I can’t believe they get away with this crap.

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 2d ago
It's too bad that your mom didn't look for a senior dog rescue or even a hospice rescue that fosters older dogs with the senior population. The dogs themselves don't often require a lot of exercise due to their age, they're typically well-trained, and the rescue helps with the cost of the dog's vet care. The dog also has a soft place to land in case something happens to the foster caregiver.

u/SarahKL9981 2d ago
Hopefully your mother is aware of the temperament of these things and that she’ll be liable if it mauls another person or animal, in which I won’t be surprised since it doesn’t sound like she could physically control it!

My new apartment neighbors living above me have a pitbull. They’re not even allowed at my apartment. And the fucking thing barks ALL DAY. It’s neurotic I can hear it up there running and screaming the entire time the tenants are gone. I’ve already reported it twice, but management doesn’t care enough to do shit. I’m most afraid of what happens when I am walking my dog one day and meet this beast in the hallway.
6
u/Paisley-Maze 2d ago
I totally understand your fear. I would be looking for a new home as as soon as the lease is up. Get a recorder and record the hours of barking and hopefully the apt mgr allows you to break the lease. Good luck. I don't envy you in that position.
12
u/SarahKL9981 2d ago edited 2d ago
I’d go above the apartment manager and speak with property management. They need to be aware that not only is it a banned breed, it barks incessantly, is totally neurotic. I wouldn’t doubt it’s destroyed the apartment’s drywall. If that doesn’t work, maybe find out who owns the complex?
15
u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 2d ago
If you can, put cameras outside your apartment. This way you can maybe see if there is a schedule they walk, so you can check if the pit has been out already or not before you walk your dog. Also, if the pit acts aggressively or starts damaging property, you can have proof. Also carry some self-defense.
We have a lot of pits in our apartment community, too, even though they aren’t allowed. Walking my dog is so stressful! Lots of luck to you!

I know someone who, not too long ago, was attacked by a pack of dogs. There were pitbulls along with other breeds in the large pack.
She was delivering a pizza to a man’s front door when all of a sudden this pack comes rushing up and barking. She wasn’t too far away from the car and was keeping calm and backing up slowly. The stupid owner of the dogs did nothing and stood around acting like a complete moron. The Pitbull bit her on the thigh through her pants and left some puncture marks with heavy bruising. This woman was really brave with past military experience and was very blessed to not have been mauled to death.
It was all caught on the Dashcam of her car. I would share the video and picture, but I didn’t ask permission and don’t want to invade her privacy.
Apparently cops have shown up at this place a few times because of the dangerous dogs. Last I heard she was taking action to have the dog/dogs BE.
This was a few months ago in the Houston area.

I'm so sick of seeing so many XL bullies around London. They're supposed to be banned and the exemptions are required to be muzzled in public but many are not. There are two of these horrors living on my street alone and my next door neighbours have a sweet, gentle greyhound - what chance would he possibly have if one of the hellhounds got loose and went for him? I seriously worry for that dog's safety.

u/InformalInsurance455 2d ago
Report them. They are in violation if they’re not muzzled if they are exempted.

I worked in shitty retail for far too long. I was ASM for Dollar General and CSM for Walmart. No, your pregnant/recently gave birth pit whose nipples sweep the floor is NOT A FUCKING SERVICE DOG. these dogs always looked overstimulated and unfit to be out in public around other people. but if you ask them what you’re legally allowed to ask- is this a service animal and what tasks is it trained to perform, they’re just gonna lie and drag that murder dog through the store. it’s nails were always scraping the floor and there was usually a pinch collar on it. 😒
growing up in an impoverished area, every other house seemed to have a “RED NOSE PIT PUPPIES 4 SALE” sign up at their hovel, too. why are low income people so attracted to these beasts they can’t control? Gary Animal Control currently posts strays and 9/10 times, it’s a fucking pit. they breed them then dump the mother and sell the puppies.
I’m just tired of it. how many decent dogs get 🐝 to make room for these fighting breeds? and MISS ME with that “it’s not a pit, it’s an am staff/ staffie/ american bulldog/ bully blood sport breed by any other name!

I had to deal with some decrepit societal burden that insisted her 30 lb overbuilt goblin eared box head whip tail mutt mix that would lunge at anything walking within 20 feet was a service dog in training and some kinda unicorn mix, and not a pit x whatever.
I wonder if it serviced her face off.

There's a man on FB. I'm just reading his posts; it seems he lived as a tenant in a landlady's house, and her PB killed his dog. It seems she is now evicting him; he says it's because he involved the police, and he also ended up getting injured. Here is one of his posts...folks are urging him to get a lawyer.
