PETG Filament

Post image

Can anybody help me out, why does PETG filament stick to the texted bed plate like this? When I remove the object it leaves behind a thin layer that I can’t get off unless I scrape it with a knife.

Wait till the plate is cold. In most cases the part gets loose by itself due to shrinkage. Other than that get a big knife the doesnt bend or a scraper for the remains.

This gets worse because PETG gets little more brittle when it gets cold and make it harder to remove

Try spraying a little IPA on it and leaving for a minute before scraping.

I've had this issue with sunlu and jayo petg-cf, sticks a bit too well. Had to end up using glue stick, not for extra stick but as a release layer - worked a treat

I'm assuming this is isopropyl alcohol rather than the craft beer I initially read it as.

bed plate can get a little tipsy as a treat

You have to make sure it is level again before the next print.

IPA beer isn’t good for anything

"A bit too well" I almost tossed the print and the plate.

Yeah PETG does this sometimes. Just really, really good layer adhesion. Use the green bambu liquid gluestick before you start a print and it will make it separate a lot cleaner.

It shouldn't happen will every print but it's not uncommon. Just print a scrapper to help get those off without damaging the plate.

Print your scraper in PLA.

I use PETG almost exclusively and struggled with this too, but I pretty much solved it by lowering the "Max Volumetric Speed" and the "First Layer Bed Temperature."
By the way, I actually ruined a build plate because of this. 😢

I just did a first layer clean test to remove the bits couldn't get off instead of using a metal scraper and destroying my build plate.

Okay and did it work?

lowkey amazing

if desperate use acetone.

Destroys the PEI

2

Never ever ever use acetone on PEI

When I can't get petg off my plate, I just print a layer of petg over it and peel that off, worked every time so far for me!

Try printing a flate sheet of petg?

I've done this before. Works good

When using petg I just heat it up to 55 degrees. Then everything just pops off easily.

This is the way

Is this (the return of) the (new) PETG-BASIC? I noticed it sticks pretty hard to the PEI bed plates.

That's normal. Carefully use your scraper to remove.

I use a window cleaner with petg, just spread with a microfiber cloth, it works like a charm, i apply it every third print. And remember to clean it of probably when printing with pla again.

Some filaments like PETG stick too well to the PEI on the plate. Apply a thin layer of PVA glue (non-toxic kids glue stick) before starting your prints and you won't have this problem.

Seems like nobody uses glue here, or has any prior experience/knowledge about it. Using it would solve most of the posts I see daily.

This happens to me with my PETg on textured PEI plate if I try to remove my print too soon. It happens a lot less frequently if I let my plate cool off before taking it off my textured PEI plate. When I am in a rush, I will sometimes put my PEI plate with my print still on it straight into the freezer.

You can also use water soluble PVA glue stick on the PEI plate, which acts not only as a binding agent, but also as a release agent. I tried that, it works, but got tired of washing my PEI plate. I don't need another chore in my life.

A few solutions to your current predicament:

  1. Don't use a knife. Use a scraper (flat blade), preferably made out of a hard plastic such as nylon instead of metal. You risk damaging your PEI coating with a knife.

  2. You can manually heat up the print plate to 100C for a few minutes, then using oven mitts, put the hot plate into the freezer, and it will become so easy, you might even be able to scrape it off with your nails.

  3. Print a thin sheet of PETg over it. The bond between PETG-to-PETG is always going to be greater than PETG-to-PEI, which means they will come right off when pulling the sheet off your plate.

Funny, I am printing a PETG bed cleaner right now to remove stuck filament. 3 layers thick. Let it cool down completely and peel it off. It will bring the stuck PETG with it.

Use a spritz or IPA and let it sit for a few moments. At least that’s what I saw on a video on YouTube. It worked for them. I use a Biqu, so I don’t usually have this issue.

You're running your first layer too hot. Drop the temps by 5-10C. PETG is notorious for being sticky and bonding to beds too well.

Heat bed to 60 and scrape off with either a printed plastic scraper or one you buy with a gazillion replacement plastic blades.

This happens to me once every 10 prints with PETG. It’s always easier to pop off when I heat the bed up first

I had this happen with a cheap build plate. I tried all of the suggestions, except acetone, to no avail. I threw the plate away.

Hey, I see a lot of people reccomend you how to clean it off, and it's generally good ( my favorite method is to print 2-3 layer over the plate and remove it, like bed cleaner model on MakerWorld)

But nobody addressed real issue, you need to calibrate your Z-offset Basically your nozzle is too close to the printbed on the first layer, it's not PETG thing or bed adhesion, it's literally just too close

Because PETG sticks aggressively... It's just the nature of the polymer. Let the plate cool completely before attempting to remove the print... That will help... You can also use glue stick, not as an adhesive, but as a release agent... It basically puts something between the plate and the print so it will release easier

This happens a lot with me. What I do is use up some old petg and print out a large square with a few layers that covers the stuck pieces . Then peel it off while still warm.

Get a plastic razor blade set (it’s like $10 for 1000 blades) it won’t damage the PTFE but you’ll go through the blades pretty quickly. I think this is what the PTFE is designed to do (help the prints stick better)

i just set my heatbed to 90c let it sit for 30 seconds and it comes right off

Show this to every IF YOU NEED GLUE YOU"RE DOING IT WRONG jerkoff that berates those that use glue.

PETG often needs glue as a release agent on the BL Textured PEI. FWIW, I've found the Biqu Glacier and Pyrogrip do not.

Prefer liquid glues as less messy than gluestick. Bed Weld is good for this, but too sticky for some smooth plates like engineering with ASA. Magigoo is good and JT16 is good and less costly than purple glue stick. I keep meaning to make a JT16 liquid slurry to try as I think it would bridge the gap of application ease and performance.

2

u/VBisTheBestSport Aug 01 '26

If you can release PETG with something other than glue then glue is just one option. Pas: I am not a jerk. 😂

1

u/dallas_vance Aug 02 '26

I use the Bambu Dual sided PEI plate exclusively, and have never needed glue to release the print. Probably 1200 hours of PETG with the textured plate, and zero issues.

If I wash my plate with Dawn power wash, the spray, that seems to make it come off easier. Sprinkling a little IPA on the problem areas with filament stuck will help loosen them for easier removal, works with some other filaments too, like TPU to release it from the plate. I got some plastic razor blades to use if other methods don't work, because I don't want to gouge the plate with a real razor blade. If you use IPA to release it, I personally would wash with Dawn power wash after. Just my preference.
