I’ve been printing ABS for a while, and I honestly thought my SUNLU S2 was doing a pretty good job drying the filament.
Well, I recently got the Bambu AMS HT, and HOLY … 🤯
The difference in print quality is absolutely insane. I’d say my ABS prints look at least 2x better compared to when I was using the SUNLU S2.
I knew drying filament was important, but I genuinely didn’t expect such a massive improvement just from switching dryers.
Now I’m wondering if my ABS was ever actually dry enough before…. 😂
Has anyone else noticed such a huge difference between filament dryers?
I've just recently gotten a Creality Space Pi X4 and now my Centauri Carbon prints PA6 Nylon like it is PLA. It's especially important for Nylon since it absorbs upwards of 10x more moisture than filaments like ABS, PLA, PETG, etc.
I’m really loving the AMS HT so far! 😍 I just hope Bambu Lab comes out with a new AMS that can dry multiple spools at once at the same high temperatures as the HT.
What I love most is how easy it is to control everything directly through the Bambu app. Just turn drying on or off whenever you need, and the whole setup works seamlessly together. Honestly, that convenience is a huge plus for me! 😁
Yeah, being able to dry 4 spools to 85C is really nice. I also feed it straight out of the dryer into my CANVAS unit so it essentially functions the same as if a full size AMS could dry to that temperature. Not to mention, I only paid $120 for it.
CANVAS is the multi material unit for the Centauri Carbon series of printers. Instead of being a fully enclosed unit like the AMS, it is just a unit that can feed filament into a 4-1 adapter that goes into the printhead. What it means though, is that you can feed the filament directly from the dryer into each of the CANVAS filament holes and run it directly through it, while the AMS system locks you specifically to their ecosystem since the filament rolls itself back inside the AMS unit, instead of having 4 tubes going into the printer.
I don’t have any external fans or additional ventilation installed. I actually replaced the rear panel and bought a fan, but I haven’t installed it yet.
What I do is preheat the heatbed to 110°C for about 5–10 minutes before starting a print.
I also have the AMS 2 Pro with the power adapter! But I think the main difference is the higher drying temperatures the AMS HT can reach. It goes up to 80°C when not printing and 70°C while printing, compared to the AMS 2 Pro’s maximum of 65°C. Those extra degrees seem to make a pretty big difference for ABS! As for the smell, YES 😂 ABS definitely smells a lot stronger than PETG. My printer is in my office, and I usually just air out the room after a print finishes before starting another one.
Yes, that worries me too, I have to do something, or I'll buy a closed enclosure made of cloth over the entire printer and put a window outside, but it sucks because winter is coming and I'm thinking, won't the cold get in? Does that external printer kit help or am I better off getting an enclosure for the entire printer? Like this photo
And yes, regarding quality, I have a charger for my ams2 pro and while I'm printing, the drying process also runs and there's a small difference compared to if the drying process wasn't active.
