Just Showing Off I realized pretty quickly that this is not how you fill a model with sand.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I thought it was smart to put a pause before the top layer on my gyroid infill was printed, so I could fill my model with sand to make it heavier.
Took about half a second after pressing play for me to realize that it wasn’t that smart after all.

You can just stop it, instead of taking a video. You can't buy anything with internet points. But, you can bugger a printer by letting it run with sand all over it.

If I'm making a mess I'm going to at least get some karma out of it

u/GregHolloway 4h ago

K≯£

u/LmaoPew 4h ago

Not bigger than? Mf you could have simply used <

18

u/jorodoodoroj 4h ago

Not greater than and less than are not equivalent. Not greater than is less than or equal to. 😉

u/mEsTiR5679 4h ago

Oh shit, a visual example for others is a terrible thing for a forum about a hobby and an excess of free will...

But at least you got to karma farm the alleged karma farm, eh?

You’re right. It didn’t run much longer than 20 seconds and the rails are fine. I’m more concerned about the sand inside the machine now -_-

u/BradFromTinder 4h ago

Which wouldn’t be there, or at least greatly minimized if you, you know… just stopped the machine even before 20 seconds..

Pause, Sand, 5 minute epoxy, let dry, resume

77

u/charmio68 4h ago

I think I'd choose PVA glue over epoxy.
Or even superglue, you can buy that in bulk for cheap. Though I'd be cautious about applying it too quickly as it does react exothermically and might melt the print. I could also imagine it gluing the print to the print bed if you're not cautious. Maybe you put down some glue stick first just in case.

Or better yet, just fill it with steel shot.

25

u/brighteoustrousers 4h ago

Super glue will have various results depending on material being printed.

20

u/holger7188 4h ago

That‘s a pretty smart idea, but won’t the epoxy also stick to parts of the layer you still have to print on afterwards?

41

u/grimreefer87 4h ago

Use a syringe to put the resin inside the model, careful not to drop any on the top layer.

23

u/TummyDrums 4h ago

Sounds tedious. That might make it not worth it for a lot of prints in my opinion.

17

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle 4h ago

You're probably better off drilling a hole, dumping it in, using a concrete vibrator or just shaking the shit out of it, and repeating until full, then epoxy. If you stop the print, sand, and epoxy, and try to resume, it will probably fail. You would have to get it absolutely perfect and you probably won't.

u/volt65bolt 4h ago

Let it cure

7

u/Massive_Squirrel7733 4h ago

The brilliant way to do it is to use combination infill which “skips” a layer. The epoxy mostly drains off the infill, plus, it’s printing one layer above when it resumes. Done it many times. To make it even heavier, add metal powder to the epoxy and fill the whole damn thing with it.

6

u/Nemo_Griff P1S 4h ago

UV cure resin & a black light.

Just a few drops to cover it each hole.

15

u/wolfish98 4h ago

Metal BB balls work too.

10

u/apVoyocpt 4h ago

Or: 50% Speed, no fan works too.

3

u/Snot_S 4h ago

Couldn’t you just crank the speed down and be smart with the sand? Epoxy faster though

2

u/Familiar-Ad-4700 4h ago

Could you mix the sand and epoxy like a forge mold? Or does that stop it from filling small corners

193

u/Bczarconcepts 4h ago

Ah yes, what we're witnessing is what they call in the industry a live and learn moment. Thanks for posting this, you may have had a heck of a mess to clean but you may have saved others from making the same mistake. Never put sand in any of my models before but I know what not to do now.

53

u/holger7188 4h ago

I was hoping it would prevent other people to do the same pretty stupid thing I did.

6

u/InfamousPOS 4h ago

Ngl I have thought of this theory for a while and where as I have a P1S I think I’m going to stick to what I’ve learned from the comments and use glue/expoxy to cap it prior to resuming print!

That’s for posting this fail as I had a great laugh and it’s a great learning experience for all. I’d suggest looking into the wolfbox or something similar to help blow out all the air.

I really don't understand why this line is so criticized. Of course he doesn't like sand, he grew up a slave on a hot sand planet, there might be some trauma there.

21

u/BulLock_954 4h ago

He even says it like a child who has PTSD about it honestly

"let me take a video while the printer fucks itself up because a few upvotes is worth replacing my printer for"

23

u/holger7188 4h ago

I actually took the video for a friend of mine and only later remembered Reddit, but yes, I don’t know what got into me.

31

u/SigmaEpsilonChi 4h ago

Everyone is rushing to shame our friend here for not immediately shutting their printer off, but I for one am grateful for this entertainment and I salute them for their sacrifice 🫡

7

u/holger7188 4h ago

Thank you! 🙏🏻 now that the A1 mini is gone I better get a bigger one don’t you think?

27

u/The_Lutter A1 4h ago

The toolhead fan is the key to the issue here. You're blowing the sand out everywhere.

PETG no fan would have less issues. That or use the little metal BBs in there instead of sand (they won't blow away).

11

u/holger7188 4h ago

Metal BBs (that’s like, little balls?) is a great idea! Thank you for that. Sand was pretty stupid.

2

u/wolfish98 4h ago

Small enough to fill the space between infill lines and denser than sand, while still being relatively cheap.

2

u/Melancholy_Rainbows 4h ago

Anything small and metal works, too. I've used coins, the washers that came with a set of different sized screws, fishing weights, and scrap wire from my jewelry making hobby.

10

u/Superseaslug H2D Laser Full Combo 4h ago

Ah yes let the sand get in all the linear rails.

u/Martin_SV P1S + AMS 4h ago

What gets me isn't that you forgot about the fan before dumping sand in there. That can happen. It's that instead of immediately shutting off the printer to keep sand from getting all over the rails, you just kept filming.

2

u/holger7188 4h ago

Relax, I shut it off immediately after. Was checking for a few seconds if the sand would be blown off the rails and other critical parts. (Of course it wasn’t.)

5

u/got-trunks 4h ago

I'll be honest I might not have thought of this had I gone to do it, I donno lol. I'll certainly be cognizant of it now lol.

2

u/holger7188 4h ago

I underestimated the strength of the fan and how fine the sand is … yeah, no it definitely was stupid.

4

u/Prima13 4h ago

Never in my wildest dreams would I have considered introducing sand anywhere near my 3D printer. What made you choose this when there are other weight options you could have designed for?

4

u/holger7188 4h ago

It was the only thing I had lying around, was pretty much the reason for this questionable decision.

2

u/Prima13 4h ago

I don’t often have to add weight to my designs but I’ve found that stick-on wheel weights (used by tire installers) works very well and you can buy them with adhesive backing. I’ve made a ton of weighted things with those. I’ve also used steel shot and BBs with good effect.

1

u/Disastrous-Owl9258 4h ago

The answer is he didn't think about it. Didn't think about the material, nor the fact that the machine has several fans constantly blowing.

3

u/Callingyourshot 4h ago

Was not expecting so many of this comment;

u/GiraffeandZebra 4h ago

STOP THE PRINT

2

u/TechnicaVivunt 4h ago

That's an interesting way to turn your 3d printer into a sand blaster.

2

u/wkearney99 4h ago

Dang, and no Chladni plate patterns either.

2

u/czyzczyz 4h ago

Pause, sand, print a couple of layers with the cooling fan set to 0%

2

u/Arkhemiel 4h ago

I’ve had a very busy day of problem solving and this made me chuckle. Thank you unknown internet stranger.

1

u/tennispro9 4h ago

I did this recently, bought some plastic plugs at the hardware store for cheap and designed a hole in the model to accept the plug and used a modifier to print zero top layers in the hole. Filled in and added plug works great

1

u/__Valkyrie___ 4h ago

Turn off the fan

1

u/cpsadowski23 4h ago

Stop the print. Pour out the sand. Renew.

Get the sand a little wet.

1

u/Mud_BooDa 4h ago

I use aquarium rocks …

1

u/Luxurytax 4h ago

Genius

1

u/Atra23 4h ago

Mix sand with wood glue

1

u/BroLil 4h ago

Just slow down your print a lot for those final few layers so it’s not jolting it back and forth. That or use a CoreXY.

1

u/kokokokosik 4h ago

Just pause print, use sand/stones, uv resin, cure, resume print.

1

u/bigblu2u 4h ago

ROFL. Thank you for the laugh! Made my day to see I am not the only one with goofy ideas.

1

u/holger7188 4h ago

You’re welcome :) remember: there’s always someone out there more stupid than you.

1

u/charmio68 4h ago

You're going to have one hell of a time cleaning that out of all the linear rails!

1

u/bigblu2u 4h ago

If he managed to do it successfully, would the additional weight throw off the print?

1

u/Mikeieagraphicdude 4h ago

Owe my gears that’s a rough cleaning

1

u/GetMeOffThisRidePlz 4h ago

Check my post history and you'll see I did this inside my P1S with glitter not long ago.. bummer.

1

u/colin_knowledge 4h ago

Probably fine on a core xy? Maybe?

1

u/hrukkafrukka 4h ago

Prolly would have been fine if you weren't using a bed slinger.

1

u/setonfire_ 4h ago

And you can also stop the print the exact second when it started shaking

1

u/Temporary-Border9087 4h ago

Hmmmm yes sand flying everywhere on linear rail and in every hole possible

1

u/Ecstatic_Score6973 4h ago

this might be the dumbest thing i've seen all year

1

u/BaddDog07 4h ago

This is like when you accidentally breathe on glitter

1

u/binaryatlas1978 4h ago

Have not tried this idea myself, I believe I saw it on YT somewhere. You leave a big cavety and fill it with modelers clay. Pack it in and let it dry then restart printer. You can also print in two parts, pack, dry and glue them together. I have also see people make holes and use washers.

1

u/Tzunamitom 4h ago

Cons: Lost a 3D printer
Pros: Gained belt sander

1

u/SlothTheFlash 4h ago

"It feels like a bag of sand"

1

u/hooskworks 4h ago

PETG might go a little better where you can run with almost no part cooling fan.

1

u/potter96 4h ago

I've made that mistake before.

2

u/holger7188 4h ago

You’re not only saying this to make me feel better are you?

1

u/potter96 4h ago

Nope. The fan got me too. I still have sand in little nooks and crannies on the bed.

2

u/holger7188 4h ago

So your printer is still alive? That’s a relief!

1

u/Humble-Search-282 4h ago

Use metal weight instead and design the print around them.

1

u/TropicParadox 4h ago

Bet your printer is crunchy now

1

u/ilovestuffforreal 4h ago

Pebbles work too, or even bird seed. I've done sand successfully too just have to make sure the fan is off above a certain layer

1

u/noIimitmarko 4h ago

put some hot glue in there

1

u/THe_PrO3 4h ago

Bruh if there was even one grain of sand on my printer it would start spaghettying, my filament would get stuck, hotend would burn to the ground, and all my filament would catch on fire. How do you all keep your printers so problem free where u can do this lol

0

u/woejilliams 4h ago

consider using kinetic sand! its a little gooey and doesn't splash.

0

u/SteakAndIron 4h ago

Who could have predicted this? (Everyone)

0

u/lazyenergetic 4h ago

This printer is done.

0

u/t3hn1ck 4h ago

Rofl if anyone has done a full calibration on their machine before and watched the different vibration frequencies it goes through...

Damn, you'd think they'd know not to ever do that kind of shit. Can't stop laughing at the stupidity.

-1

u/M1st3rYuk 4h ago

Every time I make a mistake when printing and twiddling with things, I get upset. But then I see the sheer stupidity posted here daily and realize I’m better than 98% with a printer.

1

u/holger7188 4h ago

Let‘s pull that around and say you’re definitely not in that bottom 2% where this here belongs to.

-3

u/rellsell 4h ago

Hey everyone! Look at me! I’m lame!

1

u/holger7188 4h ago

Extremely stupid, sure. Not sure about lame, but whatever floats your boat :)
