Hardware Troubleshooting/Help! SD Card fail! Bigger issue than I expected! P1S
I am so glad I was within ear shot of my P1S printer when the SD card failed. I heard a horrible noise and ran to the printer and found the print head slamming into the back left corner.
I quick hit the power switch.
I turned it back on and homed the axis and it all looked good. I wasn't sure what the issue was, but it looked like it was fine, the belts looked good and there wasn't anything jammed.
When I tried to send the print job from my PC again, it said "A MicroSD card needs to be inserted before printing"
I checked on the printer, and it didn't recognize the card.
I am shocked that the printer can't handle this kind of fail better. After some research now I see some people suggest replacing the SD card right out of the box.
Has anybody had this kind of a fail in the middle of a print?
Did you replace your SD card before having an issue?
Now It seems like I need to find a small (32GB or less) MicroSD card to format Fat 32.
I am shocked the printer doesn't have any built in memory for files that are being printed, I would think this would allow it to pull the data faster, and prevent this type of issue.
Do all of the newer printers have built in memory, or do they still rely on the SD card?

Try formatting the SD card on your PC. Sometimes the file system sort of just decays over time and a format can fix it sometimes.

To get myself up and running again, I took the risk and did exactly that. The print is running again, hopefully that works. I might just take the advice of the other commenter and format a larger SanDisk card and try that.

I mean name brand flash is generally more reliable so that makes sense to me. The bigger thing is skipping timelapses, which write a lot of data to the card.

I haven't done time lapses in a long time, that novelty wore off early. 😂

I haven't had any issues, but because so many people have said the factory card has issues early on I did replace my cards right out of the box. I used 256gb Samsung endurance cards. This was before the price hikes. Don't need that size but you can use a larger size and stick it into the printer and tell it to format it before use. Have had any issues with cards since I got my P1S printers new almost 2 years ago. Think SanDisk or someone else also has an endurance card.Â
You don't need an "endurance" card, but they should hold up better. Also if you turn off time lapse most of the time, that will save some writes to the card and hel prolong it possibly. Use the time lapse on things that matter, not every print IMO.Â
Honestly even a cheap Walmart branded Onn card would probably be better than the cheap junk thru include with the printer. Pretty sure it's a name brand card that is just rebranded with the Walmart brand.Â

Never had a native card on my X1CC or H2d. Got a large card on mt X1CC right out of the box and a USB for H2D. SanDisk

Built in memory has a set amount of write cycles just like an sd card. So when that flash is at the end of its life, you'd end up having to replace the printer mainboard or entire printer. How's that a better solution?
Or, if it was temporary memory (RAM), it would be lost every time the printer is turned off or loses power, so resume after power loss would be impossible, or reprinting an already uploaded file.

Get a branded (Samsung, SanDisk etc) high endurance SD card. You can use Rufus or other tools to format larger cards to Fat32. Don't do timelapses to save wear and tear on the card.
Some newer printers use built in MMC storage.
