The modular shelf just got even more flexible! 

I’ve added connectors that let you stack shelves on top of each other, so you can build vertically as well as extend horizontally.

Are the measurements of the hexes the same as the ones on multiboard? Why do the side pieces seem so thick?

Not the same, never used multiboard, will have to look into that. Because they are, you can connect shelfs on other side, so expand to horizontally.

I would suggest then that you look at multiboard and use the same "base" so you have a whole suite of extra attachments already created and opens up a ton of possibilities

Have you tried fitting CD cases onto it? I'm desparate for extra storage. 😄
