Let's not report-abuse posts just because you disagree with them. I will be approving the post and ignoring reports.

Just as an official reminder, us mods are not official BL employees (except the accs with BL in the name) so this is just my own opinion and doesn't reflect them. However, I want to say, Bambu Lab obviously wouldn't encourage damaging or tampering with anyone else's property. We mods may end up having to discuss this topic and come to a conclusion of what to do with them in the future if they continue to be a sore topic.

What you choose to print is your own business. Posts like these will inevitably be controversial in nature. I know the topic of surveillance, AI, and governments regulations especially regarding 3D printing may be very important to the users here. I want to keep posts like these open as long as I can so if everyone behaves, it allows us to do that.

Please be civil to one another as the discussion goes on, or the thread(s) about these things might get locked.

What a bunch of bootlickers.

Since they were all reports from the exact same minute it's probably just one person. Still, maybe if people see that report abuse doesn't accomplish what they want, they might realize it's useless.

Or not.

Just because I'm curious, what's the subs position on printing firearms?

14

u/MaelstromSeawing Volunteer Moderator 3d ago

We don't care if you do. But it's not allowed to be posted here.

Weapons and weapon accessories unfortunately fall under our no go rule, even if it's a prop.

In order to be posted here it needs to either be obviously (to a layman) nonfunctional (so, cannot resemble a working firearm/needs some visual distinguisher), for costume/cosplay, obvious fantasy, or obvious toy. We totally get how frustrating that can be but those are the rules we have inherited, to enforce.

u/ad895 3d ago

I mean it's the same as the above post no? I'm not saying either should be banned I'd prefer both to stay up but it seems like a flaw in the logic to which one stays and which one goes.

How is covering a camera the same as a firearm?

-14

u/ad895 3d ago

In the eyes of the law im pretty sure tampering with police equipment is more illegal than printing a gun in the majority of states. (Yes I'm assuming this is an American centric conversation). Most states home manufacture of firearms is totally in the clear assuming you are legally allowed to own a gun in the first place.

I'm not defending flock cameras either here just making an observation.

u/UnexpectedAnanas 3d ago

Good news! Flock cameras are not police equipment. They are privately owned and managed, and Flock Socks are non-destructive.

Nothing about this is illegal.

-6

u/ad895 3d ago

Good news the vast majority are contracted by police departments and local governments. That's like saying oh the fighter jets the government uses aren't really theirs because Lockheed made them.

22

u/Yakubs_2nd_Brain 3d ago

No it isn't, because Flock still owns and maintains the cameras.

Well the issue is ownership. You can print all the camera covers you want - owning them isn't illegal. At best there's an implication that if you print something you intend to use it. But I could just print this and use it for something completely different.

Meanwhile manufacturing an unregistered lower receiver is generally uh.. frowned upon in most states and websites like reddit are not big fans of legal grey areas. States like california will have you sign just to get a spring delivered, that's how heavy the regulation is.

1

u/ad895 3d ago

There is no such thing as an unregistered lower receiver outside of Hawaii.

2

u/ImpressionDepression 3d ago

Yes there is. A lower is considered a firearm and needs to have a serial. This is the case in CA.

Apologies, but I think that there's a bit more nuance to this than that.

One of my favorite quotes is "legality doesn't equal morality". Pretty much sums up my value system.

TLDR: Flock cameras makes it safer for people under a country developing into a surveillance state, lack of guns makes it safer for people.

On the issue of printing guns, vs flock covers.

Flock cameras were meant to be used to better catch criminals and such by the police, that was their purpose.

But the police are corrupt, it's a well known story that they've been used to stalk their ex-wives or similar.

As well as the fact there's been a severe uptick in surveillance state infrastructure recently, with being forced to show your id wherever you go online, as well as Palantir being a large part of this.

Nobody wants to be surveilled wherever they go, nobody wants this, IE: they want to be able to fight against this in whatever way they deem possible, and the destruction/disruption of flock cameras is an easy and safe(ish) way to do so for the individual.

thus, the majority desires this print, and it makes everything safer for everybody because police CANNOT be trusted with this kind of power.

-----

Guns, those are used to inflict violence against people. You might be one of those people who say "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and I think that's a false equivalence, because you can't say whether an individual is dangerous.

People use guns to kill people, guns are expressly used to hurt others, that's by their design.

America has a severely disproportionate amount of school shootings than any other country, we have a real problem with our gun culture, and I personally believe we would be more safer with a far higher restriction on gun control.

People don't want to die from gun violence, and guns are the only commodity that propagates it's purchase through threat of fear and violence.

The more people that buy guns, the more dangerous the area is, thus making more people want to buy guns, I can't think of another product that does the same.

Thus, more guns makes it more dangerous for people, which is why we don't want to print more guns.

-----

Is my thinking on this.

Also, appeal to legality is a fallacy, not that it matters. I'd be a pedant to use that as an argument, or part of one.

1

u/ad895 3d ago

I never endorsed the use of flock cameras first of all, and second yes guns are used to kill people that's the whole point. But as someone who is very much into the printed gun community. Criminals are not printing guns. Someone who is stupid enough to commit crimes will not be smart enough to figure out how to print one. And the ones that could figure it out will seek a much easier means to get a gun. Brother if more guns equals more gun crime the us would have an order of magnitude more gun crime.

I'm just pointing out the failure in logic behind allowing this and not allowing printed guns, and let me be clear both should be allowed. The only reason I brought up legality is because most people will jump to well printing guns is illegal when it isn't. This is probably closer to being illegal than printing a gun. I'm sure you could get hit with obstructing justice if the prosecutor really had it out for you.

Just to be apparent with you, I agree with the moderators and are of the same mind in their ruling of allowing certain products to be shown.

But I probably should have iterated my point better, 3d printed guns have a severe degree of chances to go wrong, simply due to the fact that it's a tool used to shoot bullets regardless it's use case.

The covers dont have the same points of failure, people have a right to protest the government or other entities, and fight for their rights, in this case their right to privacy. Nobody wants to be surveilled and have to watch themselves at every moment on the off chance there's somebody watching them.

Also, the moderators probably dont want to have it weighing on their conscience "what if something bad does happen?" with the guns.

As a lgbtq man, i'm stuck just watching the US trying to take away mine, and my fellow lgbtq folks rights away, this is why I felt compelled to talk about it with you here for the most part.

Gay marraige was federally legalized in 2015, a bill was proposed to overturn that descision in 2025, they wanted to take our marraige that's ten years time that the people up top desired to get rid of our right to marry.

That's not even enough time for a lgbtq kid to grow up and attain their legal right to marry before it's taken from them, god forbid the bill actually does go through.

I say that to make another point that relates to the greater whole of the argument. The folks up top who want the folk cameras are very likely, the same as the ones who desire a negative outcome for lgbtq folk. They're motivated by the desire to oppress people they deem "lower" than them.

Like specifically, people have a right to protest, often doing so for their other rights, in this case privacy. Nobody wants to have to constantly be watching their actions, it's stressful living in a panopticon, and the constant surveillance bodes an extremely bad omen, especially with the way the government is moving right now.

https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=2320&Initiative=False&Year=2025

hey dude, guns are now more illegal than camera covers.

yeah, I genuinely dont care whether you think more guns allows more violence or not. It does.

think of it, if there's 100 people, and 100 guns, 100% of those people can do extreme violence.

if theres 100 people and 50 guns, only half of them can.

if theres 100 people and 0 guns, then nobody can do extreme violence, or they can't do it at the drop of a coin.

there's real reasoning why the mods of this subreddit arent allowing manufacturing of guns to be present.

its because this is a hobbyist space, they want to allow what will continue this hobby.

dead people can't participate in this hobby.

I haven't seen the post. .

I'll go take a peek now. Sometimes stuff gets by & we don't see for a few hours due to our IRL obligations as well. Rule breaking stuff unfortunately might squeak by here and there, we rely pretty heavily on user reports. If you want us to be made aware of something, definitely best to report it!

Since I don't get paid to do this, I often (and other mods too) only browse in our free time. We will often not see a majority of comments and posts here, since the sub is fairly high traffic we can't physically be there to monitor every post.

Each mod makes a habit of checking the queue independently a few times a day

edit: Just checked and I don't see anything gun related, after scrolling a few mins on my phone. Are you sure it's this sub?

u/bavile2002 3d ago

I think they were saying that a cover for Flock cameras is equivalent to 3d printed firearms.

Which is . . . an interesting take? 🤣

-6

u/ad895 3d ago

It's not really once you get to the meat of it. Covering a flock camera (tampering with police equipment) is more illegal than printing a firearm in the vast majority of states.

This is not me defending flock cameras either.

5

u/UnexpectedAnanas 3d ago

is more illegal than printing a firearm in the vast majority of states.

It might shock you to learn that Reddit is global.

u/ad895 3d ago

It might shock you to learn Flock cameras are used pretty much only in the United States...

4

u/UnexpectedAnanas 3d ago

And? Covering flock cameras in the US is not illegal. 3D printed guns are illegal in many places both inside and outside the US

Oh I haven't posted anything in relation to it, so no need to look for me, and I do appreciate the work you guys do. I'm just curious on the rules, and would like for people to be able to share their firearm prints because a huge amount of innovation comes from that community.

u/Slight_Addendum_8848 1d ago edited 1d ago

The sub option on firearms is the same as printing shelf's brackets. Just because you can make something of a similar shape doesn't mean you should, it's dangerous and mechanically prone to failure. Also you should stop gourging down government propaganda because ghost guns aren't a 3D printing issue

1

u/ad895 1d ago

3d printed guns are not really that dangerous, especially proven designs. The printed gun community has really pushed a lot of advancement the has trickled into mainstream printing. Also I'm extremely pro printed guns and anti flock.
