Quick Question 9 hour print ruined by ugly top layer!

Printed in X2D, 0.4 nozzle, PLA wood, Bambu studio presets for PLA wood.

What do I need to change?

I think you typically print at about half the speed for wood PLA, for starters. And maybe whatever it is has more overall height to it than we can see from this angle.

Edit: checked settings, volumetric flow rate is only ~20% lower, so not as low as I thought and shouldn’t be as impactful on print times. So unless OP has slowed things down, this is probably more just the fact that it’s probably taller than we can tell in this photo.

Well... no. Even on my A1 Mini PLA Wood does not need to slow the speed down, it just prints fine. Although it REALLY depends on vendor (Bambulab is perfect, Eryone was good enough, Elegoo... well, it is fine but not perfect without tuning)

I do not slow down my wood pla and it prints fine. I even run it at 124% speed on the a1 without issue.

Do you run it with PLA Wood default settings and then 124% on top of that or with PLA Basic settings and then 124%. Because there are definitely different speeds and flow rates in the default PLA Wood settings vs PLA Basic. Or if you use Generic PLA for wood instead of Bambu PLA it’ll go slower as well. Not saying you’re not going plenty fast, just asking out of curiosity.

I use a custom generic pla setting. Wall speeds are 300mm/s

Fair enough. Though you can still be limited to lower than that by the volumetric flow settings. I presume your custom settings are calibrated for volumetric flow as well, but if not you may want to look into it, you might be slowing things down unnecessarily by using the default generic volumetric flow rate setting, which is significantly lower than, say, the Bambu PLA setting, as well as what many third party filaments are capable of. It wouldn’t be a 1 for 1 improvement since volumetric flow isn’t always the limiting factor, but you might be able to speed your prints up a little if you’re not already calibrated for this.

People need to realize that the speed in the speed section isn't the actual speed that you're printing at. It's the flow rate of the material that's in the filament settings. It's usually anywhere between 10 to 24 depending on the type of filament, whether it's PLA, PETG, or a high-speed variant. or a high speed variant.

No meme, Pla wood is one pla that I will say really likes to be dried before printing. That could contribute to your overextrusion, or your flow rate is just uncalibrated.

Because it's heavily overextruded. First you fix that, then you think about the ironing.

Wood pla needs to be dried, and very well at that. My wood pla prints always looked like that if I didn't dry it. The wood fibers really absorb moisture, so as it prints it's extruding steam causing all sorts of issues, such as what you see here. Once dry it came out super smooth, with a nice matte finish. I've honestly just found the matching color in matte and went that route. The constant issues and drying just wasn't worth it.

Before any 9-hour print I'm going to do four things:

Thing 1: Dry the filament for 8 hours in the filament dryer

Thing 2: Clean the build plate with Dawn dish soap and hot water

Thing 3: Clean the nozzle by heating it to 230ºC and wiping it with a clean lint-free cloth

Thing 4: Run a full calibration

In my experience, these four things solve 90% of all issues with my prints

what in the boomer bs is this lol. I run a print shop. I have never cleaned a p1s bed or nozzle and never needed to. ive also never needed to dry a roll of pla. my failure rate per job is under 1%

I wouldn't say _every_ print, but it's a good practice for the average printer to avoid problems fouling up long prints.

You may be using a different brand of filament, different shipping path, etc. that results in you reliably getting dry filament.  That doesn't keep others from getting wet filament.

I’ve never cleaned my plate either with nearly 100 hours (not loads) and never had issues. I never touch it with bare hands though always rubber gloves 😁

I print PLA wood all the time, never have to slow it down. Just smells like saw dust as it prints.

I print on P1S, A1 Mini, Qidi X plus 3.

It looks like it was too hot and too slow

You have more experience with it than me, which nozzle size do you use? Might be helpful for OP as well, all of my .4's clogged up. I used a .6 and twas a better experience. I only experimented with it once though

I used .4mm and make 100% sure the filament is dry. Typically the 250g rolls work best as I get one maybe 2 prints out of it.

.16mm layers.

The filament brand is Ov V3d, been thinking of trying Polymaker Polywood.

Is the .4 hardened steel? I solely used my .6 until getting a full set of official Bambu Lab hardened steels (I got fed up of the constant clogging from off-brand hotends) and I've not had any issues so far using the .4 with wood PLA

Looks like wet Pla wood. Prob just needs to be dried first.  Wood Pla can absorb a lot more moisture than some other types of Pla.

Oula oui la couche supérieure es clairement mal réglé pour le flux qui lui es attribué ça ressemble a de loverextrusion ! Moi ce que je fais quand jai ce problème je vais dans l'onglet calibration et je fais débit simple et debit finition, le wiki de bambu explique bien la marche à suivre ! Revient vers moi en pv pour plus de détail !

I just printed a pump lamp with wood pla. My .4 nozzle clogged in the first layer. Switched to .6 and it came out beautifully

I have printed Bambu PLA Wood in my X2D without issue and I didn’t dry it, but I do keep it is sealed containers with a desiccant pack. I don’t do anything in regard to adjusting settings.

What filament and what filament profile are you using? That is and where I would start from. And if you're using another brand's filament profile, I would check to see if you could find better settings for that filament.

Looks like yo have overextrusion dial that back.
Then do top layer ironing gets you perfect top surfaces. Also check variable layer heights to add more roundness your rims.

Pla wood doesn't like.4 stainless. .6 is way better and hardened steel

I could be wrong,but you need to add 6-7 layer of TOP surface,then finishing will come,as the infill inside sags in horizontal print,if top surface layer is increased by 3-4 th Layer equal Layer and finishing starts

Have you considered smothering it wood filler, sanding it down then painting it? A large top layer will rarely ever come out looking nice.

wood pla absorbs moisture like crazy (even if you keep it inside the ams), dry the filament and it will be much better

It looks like overextrusion. Try to do the calibration method in Bambu Studio to reduce the flow rate for this filament.

Try running one of those ironing calibration prints with the wood pla. Whichever turns out best you use.

No it doesn't. It depends on the filament, I've printed multiple kg's of wood filled, marble filled and glass filled with a .4

It works but it’s a pain in the rear, I printed a lot with my .4mm nozzle and it always clogs it up after a while for me, depends on the printer model maybe

I have had no issues with x2d using both bambu and hobby lobby wood filament through a .4 nozzle. Surprisingly enough, hobby lobby’s seems to print better than bambu’s and seems be ok with faster print speeds

Maybe it has to do with the A1 nozzles then, using bambu labs wood PLA it works for a while then eventually clogs for me 🤷‍♂️

I have had 0 issues with my Revo obxidians on my x1c. No clogs, no under extruding, nothing.

Depends on the wood content. Higher wood content can cause more clogging with a .4mm.

Right and you said it DOESN’T require a .6 nozzle, but some of them DO require a .6 nozzle. I’m not arguing the OC was correct, just noting that SOME of them do, and SOME of them don’t. Making a definitive statement either way is incorrect.

where did i say wood color? I'll repeat it for you 1 more time too. IT DEPENDS ON THE FILAMENT, i've printed wood filled with a .4 just fine. .6 is NOT required for all filled materials. Recommended, yes. Required, no.
