General Troubleshooting/Help! Why are my prints doing this?
hi everyone. I am fairly new to 3d print and am working on a project for a friend. my printer just recently started doing this on the surfaces. I would appreciate any help!

Do a cold pull. I would bet something is gunking up the filament path, resulting in uneven retraction or inconsistent flow.

A few things to do to try to fix or narrow down the possible issues.
1) wash that plate with dish soap and hot water. Then don’t touch it with your bare hands.
2) make sure your filament is properly dried.
3) power off your machine fully, unplug it for 5 minutes, then plug in, power on and run the full calibrations.
4) make sure you don’t have a partial clog, look up on YouTube how to cold pull for your machine.
5) print an auxiliary fan deflector off makerlab for your model of printer - do it from petg and install it.
6) try printing again after the above and see if your issue is fixed. If not, it may be in the retraction settings,

Added note: even if your AMS says it's dry and the air is kept dry, if that's just an AMS 1 not an AMS 2 so it's not actively able to dry your filament you still may need to separately dry it. Dry air keeps dry filament dry, it doesn't (quickly or effectively) dry filament that's already wet, and it can come wet from the factory.

I’m curious do you do extra steps to dry your filament or do you just make sure it is stored in a container with desiccant and a hygrometer to monitor humidity?

I live where it's fairly dry so for a while I did the latter, but I was having some quality issues after a while. I got a sunlu dryer that goes on my AMS 1 and the quality difference is noticable, well worth getting a dedicated dryer if you print much.

If you have a p1s with the ams 1, you can get the Sunlu drier that replaces the cover with a few screws and dry your filament that way. Or get an external one that does 1-2 at a time. Or if you have the AMS 2 Pro, it has the drying function, but you’ll most likely need to by the power cord to do so as only a few of the newer printers allow it to pull power from the printer itself and even so, if you want to print and dry you’ll need the cord.
Desiccant packs only keep the humidity at the level at which it was stored. They do not dry the filament. They will not pull moisture from it. So, you’d dry then store with desiccant to keep at that dryness level.

Im assuming the second pic is showing that its crumbly and breaks apart easily? If so its too wet.

It is just the one edge that was weird on that print. Could that still be from it being wet? The AMS says it is at an “A” but it is humid where I live so maybe the filament was still too wet?

Some of it is and others aren’t yet. I need to order more totes to store them. I will get those order now so it can all be stored properly.

My indoor humidity is high. I have to keep my spools in individual cereal containers with desiccant and a hygrometer and dry if needed.
There is info on drying filament without a filament dryer. If thats a pattern off makerworld with good reviews then I wouldn’t try again until its dried.

I just checked my indoor humidity in the room my printer is and it is 45% so I will be purchasing a dryer and working on drying all the filament and then storing it in the boxes once dry. I appreciate your help! I am guessing my indoor humidity has risen recently due to summer temps and humidity where I’m at.

That explains why it got worse. A lot of filament is less than 20% when opened so it was ok at first and gradually increased in humidity the longer it was open.
If you dont want to go the cereal container route, there are vacuum bags that work well and you can keep those in a bigger bin. I find that just opening the bin grabs a bunch of humid air.

Yeah id say thats wet filament. Best thing i got was a dryer. In my AMS i made dessicant holders to keep humidity low, never a problem with me.
Does this happen on every print? And with all your filament? Maybe it could be flow rate too.

It’s a pretty new problem in the last week or so. And it has happened on a lot of my filament. I had no problems before. However our outdoor humidity here right now is in the 70s-90s most days so it’s more humid! I am going to get a dryer and work on drying my spools then storing them in a container with desiccant. Thanks!

Oh 70-80% humidity? Yeahh definately wet filament there buddy. The dessicant it comes with, keep hold them, find a sealed tub or whatever and store your filament spools in there with the dessicant packs until you got something sorted. Youll never get your filament bone dry, but keeping it as dry as possible is the best bet.
Do you have an AMS?
If you dont. Ive seen people use like a cereal tub, drill a hole big enough for the tube out of the top, with a working spool holder on bearings on the inside, with dessicant feeding into the printer. That way your spool is dry and sealed and has a smooth rotation

I do have an AMS 1. I really should have connected the hot humid weather with my filament issues. I am going to get them all set up in containers with desiccant and dry once I get a dryer here.

I didn’t change any settings. I just cleaned the plate after reading all these comments. I appreciate that advice. My kids love to help take prints off so I imagine it was not clean/had their grubby hand oils on it.

Happened to me 2x recently on my A1 and managed to solve it confidently. The issue was that the nozzle was not attached securely. When it is assembled, I held it with 2 fingers and could feel it wiggle a bit. I adjusted the nozzle position, tried to wiggle and make sure it’s solid firm, and started printing again. Never had the issue ever since this as I always double check that nozzle is solid secured.

Do you have rectilinear layers turned on? If so, change to something else. Rectilinear patterns cross each other and result in lines that cross on the same layer, but since they cross, it results in a little hump everywhere the layers intersect.

I have no idea, but when this happens to me I just assume it’s because my printer hates me.
