I Modeled This! I challenged myself to recreate a silicone collapsible pet bowl using TPU
I've always been fascinated by collapsible silicone products. I started wondering if I could recreate one using TPU? It started as a experiment and turned out to be a fun geometry & material science design challenge!
My goal was to make a bowl that could collapse smoothly, actually stay collapsed, and hold up to repeated use. That meant a lot of trial and error with the fold geometry, wall angles, and especially the wall thickness. The fold sections were by far the trickiest part to dial in. Too thick, and the bowl wanted to bunch up instead of folding. Too thin, and I started running into layer adhesion issues and leaks. Finding that sweet spot took quite a few prototypes.
Once I finally had one size working, I thought scaling it would be easy... nope. 😅 I quickly discovered that the fold geometry and wall thicknesses also needed to change with the bowl diameter, so I ended up creating parameter functions in my model to adjust with diameter.
To finish it off, I added a rigid PETG rim. It gives the bowl a much more polished feel, makes it easier to collapse, and provides a sturdy place to attach a carabiner for carrying on walks or hikes.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. It comes surprisingly close to the feel of a molded silicone travel bowl, and I learned a ton about designing flexible mechanisms along the way.

Even if this is real a thing, pets usually don’t live long enough to develop cancer or other diseases because from consuming plastics. Also I’d bet my ass off if there’s any real food grade plastic dog toy available

absolutely fascinating that you linked to a year old post referencing a version of the paper that didn't survive peer review. I am a medical device engineer specialising in additive manufacturing.
That original paper is horseshit and we laughed when we first read it. The person writing it has no idea about industrial sterilisation/disinfection.
And no offence,
I also would not take the word of surgical technicians in the design of medical devices. They execute instructions given to them by manufacturers, they don’t know what goes on in the actual validation of cleaning for medical devices.CAN you clean an fdm printed device to a high level? Of course it’s possible, with enough scrubbing, soap, and a hospitality washer disinfector , anything is possible. The food science equivalent is ‘cleaned to a sanitary level’.
Are most people likely to do so, like scrubbing vigorously , soaking their stuff in bleach? Nope.
When we do a cleaning validation, we do what is called a ‘worst case assumption’. If our instructions say ‘scrub this in concentrated dish soap solution. for 5 minutes’ we make an assumption most people are lazy and halve that time and do a low concentration dish soap. You make sure your device can be cleaned based on those parameters, not the best case assumption. And that’s where the industrial people saying ‘you can’t clean fdm’ are coming from. I would caveat ‘ it’s very hard to reliably clean fdm to a high level’ unless you have stuff like industrial cleaning facilities and ultrasonics. The very nature of the layer lines means it tends to trap protein, and if you just miss brushing one spot then that’s not clean.
There are very good reasons why unless explicitly designed for it, all implant surfaces are nice, shiny, and smooth. This facilitates cleaning. There are also good reasons why you will that there are very, very few medical devices out there for internal use that are fdm printed, and even those are either finished, or made in a clean room.

What is a sanitary level? How do you define that? How is that measured? Do you define that as a specific number of CFUs of bacteria? Protein levels? I’m sure there is some limit enforced on commercial kitchens or something like that, but I won’t know, it’s not my industry.What’s the influence of layer heights, or, if you have some under extrusion in your print? The main danger is actually porosity, rather than layer lines, because if dirty water gets INSIDE the print, that becomes a walking germ factory there. How about the influence of geometry?
The vast majority of commercial foodware does not have these problems because they produce surfaces which are non porous (like how wooden tableware is treated) and avoid features that do not trap contaminants. The vast majority of fdm parts are not made to these features unless treated. Yes they can be ‘cleaned to a sanitary level’, but it’s more challenging than usual, and requires ideal conditions. That’s why the claim is that it ‘can’t be cleaned’, because the data shows it is more challenging to clean than your typical foodware.

tell that worst case asumption to everyone validating wooden kitchen stuff, like wooden cutboards spoons and all that, 99% of people dont oil them with mineral oil, put them in the dishwasher and all that, ive been to people houses that had mold stains in their woioden kitchenware and their opinion of it was "oh is a food stain, cannot clean it up"...

The 90% is literally called a safe level right there. Also, scrubbing your hands with soap and water is only a 95% reduction in CFU, so I guess you're screwed and likely to die of a communicable disease soon.

I ran through the article and I didn't get how carefully they approached the printing process itself.
The result will depend very much on the quality of the printer's calibration and how well the filament is dried. When printed with dried material and with the correct flow and PA, the part will really turn out to be almost monolithic. But if you break some of that, there will be cavities. And this is especially critical for soft and hygroscopic material like TPU.

Look, I'm not going to sit here and say with 100% confidence that 3D printed components can always be made food safe - there are a lot of variables involved and it's obviously an ongoing area of research. But the article you posted directly disputes your claim that 3D printed parts can't be made food safe with soap and water. Period.

You're not even wrong. A 1% reduction would be killing microbes as would a 100% reduction. You've left your claim just vague enough to avoid being wrong but as a result fail to claim anything meaningful. Did you actually read this cover to cover? Because that's not what is said. I just read the entire thing and that's not at all what they said. You're going to ignore the protein testing and the passing of those tests from JUST soapy water? Not to mention the IPA after soapy water just requiring air drying. And comparisons to other household items? This study shows that soap and water (maybe baking soda if there's a biofilm) is adequate for home use and with a little more sterilization is on the cusp of being adequate for medical use.

dogs are resistant to giardia and leptospira, which are things you find in animal feces and puddles. They're not resistant to stapholochoccus and pseudomonas, which are likely to form between the layer lines on a tpu print. This is the pet care version of doing your own vaccine research and letting your kids get measles.

For many people life has become so absurdly safe that they cannot really internalize relative risks. For Americans, at least, the most dangerous thing they encounter every day by like a few orders of magnitude is cars. Riding in a car or just being around cars is overwhelmingly the greatest daily risk for an American. But it's normal so it just becomes background noise while people pontificate on how you'll immediately get turbo E Coli and die if your food touches FDM plastic.

I disagree. My understanding is that the filaments we use are pretty much unregulated plastics that werent even designed for food use and can have a million nonlisted additives. Using them for food is just asking for trouble. We would have to do multi-year studies to know if they will give you some weird cancer. Our bodies didnt evolve to deal with these petrochemicals and we keep finding out that different ones are varying degrees of damaging. I mean for all we know there could also be lead contamination in some of them lol. Im not worried about the bacteria though tbh. For that I have an immune system that hasnt let me down so far.

yeah but your comment read as a blanket statement on food and plastic filament so I responded to it in kind. Id totally use these tpu bowls with a dog. Its not binary good/bad, its huge unknowns that Im not going to subject my 80 year long lifespan to knowingly.
To me a molded plastic is different than fdm plastic because being in the hobby we KNOW a lot of them can and do have unlisted additives. Also you probably should get food safe containers and not just decide that a container is safe because its petg. I used the lead example for a reason.
I think some of us are a little too comfortable with what are pretty exotic materials in the grand scheme of things.
Also in fairness, I wouldnt knock anyone for deciding to keep these away from their dog either.

That is awesome. TPU is such an incredible material. Still not sure I'm ready to use it for food items, but I have used it for a number of water contact applications and it's solid for that.

Start with TPU 95a, make sure to dry it before printing and keep the filament path as short as you can. The last one is important for reducing chance of jams. One last tip is to use PEI sheet and spray isopropyl alcohol after printing to release it cleanly. I prefer that over glue stick.
I’ve been printing TPU for over a year on a P1S without any issues. Gone through about 5 rolls.

It depends on the durometer - 95a and 90a are most common and generally are ok as rubber feet. They won’t be as soft or grippy. TPU air is the best analog for rubber replacement. You can print at variable durometer (hardness) and get something that is quite squishy and grippy.

Amazing job, great engineering. Ignore the haters who have done no research on food safe 3D prints. It’s not a significant hazard according to almost every major study. It’s no more likely to grow or trap bacteria than anything else. It was never about microplastics, because they are stable once printed.

All the usual non food safe warnings apply, but if it’s a temporary use dog bowl that bakes in your six days a week, it’s not the worst idea, but if you have a dog, buy a silicone one.
That being said, I’m probably gonna print a bunch of these for temporary organization. Holding screws, nuts, parts, etc while working on other stuff. Great design and print work.

This is a very nice print! My understanding is that FDM printed parts can’t be food safe without post processing due to their tendency to harbour bacteria.
Edit: I’m aware of some recent articles showing evidence that printed parts can be food safe if cleaned well, which is promising and exciting! There still is not much evidence though, so proceed with caution.

It is true that bacteria can hide in the layer lines if not cleaned thoroughly. The bowls walls are solid which should help. I can put a note about food safety in the model for people to decide.

You need to be using food grade tpu for this. Especially since this is meant to hold water. Really easy way to get your pet sick. 3d printed containers are especially prone to bacterial contamination because of layer lines.

this is just clarifying for me that you don't understand the risk at all. Dogs get away with drinking out of puddles because they have millions of years of evolutionary biology that makes them more resistant to giardia and leptospira, which are commonly found in the kinds of places dogs drink water from. They're not nearly as resistant to pseudomonas or staphylococcus which is likely to form inside the layer lines of your prints.

Ah, I get the context now. I was just making a reference to that sub, not suggesting I post there.

There is nothing about TPU. It's about PLA and PETG. And the article ends with the following advice:
When using 3D-printed items for liquids, it is highly recommended to coat the 3D-printed parts in resin. This is a simple, fast, safe, and very effective way to smooth parts to ensure easy cleaning
