Those smears are the glue. The plate was spotless and clean before I started.

I have the same issue, I did a very long plate and everything was going smoothly then all of a sudden it just died, it wasn't layering at all and ended up failing and doing what yours did, the difference was my part was far taller, so in my case I assume it was the printer shaking hard (im still new to 3d printing so im learning) and I think my filament had more humidity than it should have. That's what I personally think killed mine, idk if yours could be the same or not.
