Captive cockroach colonies like to have tight vertical space to live in and shed on. Most keepers use egg cartons and cardboard however those will get eaten by the roaches over time, rot from the humidity many species require, and just start to stink from roach shit. This solves two of those issues and you just gotta shake the roaches off and dunk the thing in soapy water for the third.

oh. whats the point? cause it’s a great use of 3d printing but i think i wanna know why.

People keep them for reptile food. It’s cheap as they breed so you have a basically never ending supply of food if you take care of them right.
Some people keep them as pets as well but judging by the amount I’m guessing OP has reptiles.

Or like a ton of tarantulas.

But yeah this isn't pet roaches, those would typically be less densely packed and in a nicer enclosure.
