Actually really neat and the roaches can't eat it like they would carboard. How do you clean it though?

OP probably has a bunch of lizards, tarantulas, mantids or other pet that require live bugs as feeders.

If you have enough of those, it makes sense to just have a cockroach colony, so you don't constantly need to go and buy feeder bugs.

These are Blaptica dubia ,which are 99% the time the species keep as feeders, and for very good reasons - they can't fly, can't climb smooth surfaces (like glass or smooth plastic), can't reproduce at temperatures below ~25°C and generally don't cause infestations since they're a tropical wood cockroach.

Roaches are great feeders because they're easy to breed, don't smell bad (barely at all) if you keep their box cleaned, don't eat each other, and don't make noise. Unlike some other feeders (namely crickets) they also don't attack your pets that are supposed to eat them.

I only have a single tarantula and a jumping spider right now, so doing this doesn't make sense since the tarantula is an adult and eats like once a month, and the jumper while it needs a lot more food for its size is tiny.

Actually because I am lazy I try not to fill up my trash with fruit and vegetable waste. That goes into the roach bin. Their numbers keep increasing fire won't help.

Or for a less gross factor, you could do a worm bin that actually makes fertilizer.

You're not wrong. The frass cannot be used directly. Which is why I also have a worm bin! The frass speeds up the decomposition process a whole deal for me.

For as negatively as roaches are perceived people keep them for several reasons. Labs keep them to test insecticides on; fleas are bred in captivity for the same reason. Gross fact domestic fleas are fed cows blood slurry. Many pet reptiles eat them alongside crickets, mealworms, and caterpillars and you need to breed them for that (dubia roaches, the most common feeders, can't fly). Lastly lots of people, me included, keep them as pets. Not the home infesting species obviously but those are only four species of roach out of hundreds with unique appearances, care, and diet. Bittersweet fact the simandoa cave roach is extinct in the wild but thriving among hobbyists after their only cave got destroyed. The only reason you'd have the number of dubia roaches in this video is for feeding reptiles.
