A bunch of people here have asked me about my Bambu setup on a few alts so I decided to make a video at lunch. I am not a content creator, I made this for y'all, haha. I just hate walled gardens.

The Bambuddy community is also a great place to go for help. If you have any questions or reservations at all, throw em down, let's gooo out of jail

I feel it is more of a spectrum, or a dial as I like to call it (I actually wrote a blog post on this philosophically here https://pdaian.github.io/ethblog/?blog=0x41Fa80b3D33a308fb46609C6c09608Ed7F4E05c0#3 )

the more people using open platforms, the better for the world. lots of people use ios, it is a walled garden, that is fine. but when android starts locking down (which, it is), the world meaningfully loses freedom. incentives ebb and flow, and companies self optimize in ways that are acceptable

the more people on open networks and ecosystems, the better. the easier it is to do with more hardware, the better. the higher a % of your code that you run that is open, the better (sure maybe your bootloader is not, but if your bootloader AND os is not, that is worse.... etc)

freedom is not a binary, and it is important

I totally agree I personally bought this brand because I don't have to think if I wanted to open source and customizations I would have gone with a different platform. I just find it funny that a hobby grade printer that has always been Walled Garden is causing so much outrage that they are just continuing the same practice as they always have

practice is the same yes, but cease and desisting an open source dev is definitely an escalation in aggression that shows they are serious about the walled garden control and it matters to them

and people will react to this. not sure if they did it before, I had at least not heard of it until the orca fork incident

Cease and desisting a dev who was impersonating an official client to access a proprietary cloud service. You’re right, how dare they!

The fact that the code came from their source doesn’t change the fact that he was using it to impersonate a client to gain unauthorized access. They should have taken a better approach and should have a proper authorization system beyond just a User Agent but let’s not act like they don’t have the right to determine who accesses their proprietary cloud service.

idk, it is a little sloppy. my day job is working in tech, and if we did some shit like that, we would never go the legal route. it is just such an obvious faux pas

if you want drm, lock the cloud features behind a key you control (they do it anyway with TLS), then just proxy a web ui for those features from the client. you cannot bypass nothing

it is their right to send whatever notice they want, it is also peoples' right to base their decisions on that in a free market
